This is awesome! - I was planning on a similar setup myself.. One thing you might want to look into is creating a 2nd camera in unreal and have it facing backwards and connecting them back to back in unreal engine. Then you can use DMX “pixel mapping” to sample and send light that is shining onto the talent in the game engine drive the led pixels in your real world lights. Then you are pretty much “front-projecting” the colors in real time onto your real world subjects and can mix in real world lighting with contact lighting from the game. This might do well to get your talent to fit more into the virtual world.. and make lighting easier in the real world.
Hi Andyax,This is amazing.Im working with a led wall manufacturer who is eager to looking for someone who involved in Virtual Production Stage for filmmaking for business collaboration. They can supplier led wall for you guys do more testing shots if you are interested.Feel free email me:Aminor@sansitech.com Thank you ,Aminor
We need a masterclass for indie filmmakers doing virtual production on budget. A course that covers everything from studio setup to production. I think such course is in demand as more people like me wish to get into virtual production but there aren't much learning materials for this topic. Thanks for this video and hope you guys consider my request.
It's still not too cheap. The mars system costs 16k, and a decent projector is also setting you back 5k, but yes, I would like to see more bts ot how to setup the systems.
Anders, VJUS is becoming quite the production studio. I am totally impressed with what you guys are doing in your studio space without the expense of those super large production studios.
Thanks Rick. The studio felt huge when we moved in. Now it's getting smaller and smaller with all the gear, moving walls, props etc. But it's crazy how much you can do in a 5m x 10m space.
@@Andyax For nearly a year, I have been trying to work in a similar sized studio (unfortunately with lower ceilings than your studio). You guys have succeeded is ways that I can only dream of. It is truly inspiring all that you have accomplished.
I have been working on Virtual Production as a DP for past 2 years and it's really have been a gaming changing experience in filmmaking. This is first projector based virtual production I saw and hat's off to you guys doing such an amazing job.
Here is a commercial we shot in October. We utilized a projected virtual background in 6 of these sets. This would be impossible on an LED stage as most do not have the floor space. ua-cam.com/video/RVrXXXFdPcY/v-deo.html
Main thing first you have to realize the virtual production is not a career, its a medium which is used to create films , Ads , gaming stuff etc. Virtual production is the future obviously but it depends on what job role you want to choose to work with Virtual production technology whether its like you wanna work as Unreal engine artist, cinematographer, motion capture artist etc. You first have to figure out the particular role which suits your skills because there are various department which work under virtual production. For more knowledge you can surely do you research and figure out what suits you best. Thank you.@@bendigerirohith7267
So a group of talented, creative individuals come together in a collaborative effort to solve a challenging problem, and everyone wins as a result. If only the rest of our world worked like this.
Two suggestions to achieve darker shadows in the rear projection: Have you tried an ALR (Ambient Light Rejecting) screen? And have you tried adding more ambient light to the foreground, then crushing all the shadows in post? Also, for a window scene like this, it might actually be affordable to use a large TV rather than a projector.
As a musician I view this as when Pro Tools arrived on the scene. Originally designed for TV production it quickly found a home with the small home music studio niche. I believe it absolutely helped give many musicians a platform to create excellent quality musical recordings on a small budget. The best is yet to come from small / indie movie producers.
So interesting, one of your best recent videos. Hearing William's insights and also seeing how the Norxe projectors are being made were highlights for me. Looking forward to more virtual production videos!
imho the light coming from the window is not enough based on the image i see. that's why a led wall would be better, cause it would work as a light source also
Two of my favorite channel on the same rooms! Working together!!! Fun fact for another steps to ICVFX and VP in general: you can pixel map the color and lighting on your unreal scenes to the fixture you have on the studio, and controlled both on the same time with matching color, intensity and character using DMX. Hope you guys will do more experiment with unreal. ps: I envy a lot those projector of yours.
I was wondering about this, thanks for mentioning it. How is the DMX output from UE? I'm assuming USB? and is it built into UE, or is this a plug or external box between UE computer and DMX lights? Thanks!
Bro, I legit reached the youtube subscription limit of 2000, it didn't let me subscribe to you, I loved this content so much that I un subbed to many ppl just so I can subscribe to you! Amazing video bro
This is awesome! The possibilities with in virtual production has skyrocketed the last couple of years. Good to see that others also struggle to get started with Unreal Engine. Williams Lofoten-content blew my mind and this collab is so cool to watch!
I've worked in film production and want to get back into the industry as an independent filmmaker. This video was beyond inspiring. I'm curious to see what a game-changer the technology will be and how well it will be adopted in Africa. The Norxe segment was great; it's fascinating seeing how these machines come to life. Thanks a mill!
It is very cool, I just think projectors are not that powerful to giver higher dynamic range as LEDs and that is due to the nature of light, so I dont think they would replace them, but overall very cool experiment
BRAVO!!! an excellent video. I love what you are doing! makes me want to engage more with the Unreal Engine. Great work, and a good Video well laid out!!!
Excellent low budget demonstration of virtual production. Proof that it's not too far out of reach for many low budget productions. I would love to work with virtual production for my future projects.
Great first attempt at this, but I can't help but notice the track isn't perfect. All of the shots have some jittering in the foreground tree and it could be a number of things causing this. It would be cool if you guys did a follow up with a larger background to troubleshoot the tracking. I can't tell if it is something that can be solved with some tweaking or a limitation of the Vive tech. I do know real Virtual Production stages use more advanced tracking tech and timecode synced GPUs to reduce lag. I work in VFX and if I delivered a track like that it would be sent back. That all being said there is a lot of potential here.
When we got to use an LED wall on a music video shoot, the first issue we had was huge moire patterns as we did a slow push. It was infuriating. Had to tilt the camera around 30 degrees and use wider shots to compensate. Was a nightmare. It was good for depth of field shots where the LED screen was out of focus. Early days but that still haunts me to this day re LEDs.
Its amazing to see, which people how to trust the way of direction to leave and find the way of no/where. I know, this is not correctly to understand but its is exactlly What i thought.
That's actually pretty impressive. Love the idea of it being less digital. This makes it more natural. I personally need to see more natural things and less digital.
I had this idea for a while but didn't have the resources to make it real. Nice to see you manage to do it. We did however use screens in our feature film to do something similar in a more classic way without a moving camera and with a static background to match it and it was quite nice compared to our VFX skills. But of course with some drawbacks. It's refreshing to be able to do in camera VFX. Let's hope it gets more common and more of beautiful stories get to be told along the way.
I personally really don't like this new tech. Sure it's a good storytelling tool. It's a similar comparison to shooting on film vs digital which most people don't understand.
I’d love to see a short clip of baby crawling then another shot of him walking then mum & dad in and out of the shot as a quick Timelapse from baby till elderly while the seasons keep changing through the window. Everything in fast motion
Very cool! Thank you for sharing. Very impressive and nice to see, that this enters the space of middle-sized and small businesses. If unreal-engine were to integrate AI, text to image technology like midjourney it would change even more.
