  • Japanese-style deep drop bottom fishing, known as "深海釣魚" (shinkai tsuri) in Japanese, is a technique used for targeting deep-sea fish species that dwell in depths ranging from several hundred to thousands of meters below the surface. This fishing method is popular in Japan, particularly for catching prized species like snappers, groupers, and deep-sea varieties of fish. Here's a basic overview of how Japanese-style deep drop bottom fishing is typically done.
    Specialized Gear
Anglers use specialized fishing gear designed for deep-sea fishing. This includes heavy-duty rods and reels capable of handling the pressure and weight of deep-sea fish, as well as strong fishing lines and rigs.
    Electric Reels
Electric reels are often used for deep drop bottom fishing due to the extreme depths involved. These reels are equipped with powerful motors that can retrieve heavy sinkers and catch from the depths efficiently.
    Baits and Lures
Baits and lures used for deep drop bottom fishing vary depending on the target species. Common baits include squid, fish chunks, and other natural baits that appeal to deep-sea fish. Artificial lures may also be used to attract fish in some cases.
    Bottom Mapping
Anglers may use advanced technology like fishfinders and depth sounders to locate promising fishing spots on the seafloor. Mapping out the bottom structure and identifying underwater features such as drop-offs, reefs, and underwater mountains can help pinpoint areas where deep-sea fish are likely to congregate.
    Techniques
Once a suitable fishing spot is identified, anglers deploy their rigs to the desired depth using heavy sinkers. The rigs are then left to drift or are jigged up and down to attract the attention of deep-sea fish. Patience is often required as bites from deep-sea fish can be sporadic, but the rewards can be significant when a big catch is hooked.Safety Considerations
Deep drop bottom fishing can be physically demanding and potentially hazardous due to the depths involved. Anglers should always prioritize safety by wearing appropriate safety gear, following best practices for handling heavy equipment, and being mindful of weather and sea conditions.Overall, Japanese-style deep drop bottom fishing requires specialized equipment, knowledge of deep-sea habitats, and patience, but it can be a rewarding and exhilarating experience for anglers looking to target trophy-sized fish in the depths of the ocean.
