  • Firstly, apologies to anyone who's been waiting for more in depth on how to use this. The Other video I did (with a very quick track that was at least done live) has had quite a few views.
Here's more in depth on the subject and specifically the template I made for doing using it. Specifically it's for making sure that you get perfect loops every time and making sure you don't lose control.
So, as I state in the video there's basically no info given by Reaper on how to use Super 8, and that's fine, in the project file, (which can be found here: drive.google.com/file/d/1BpA0... )
I've set everything to parameters which work for me. I came at these from a bit of trial and error and have to confess they mostly puzzle me on their exact operation. I'd recommend you download the project and add your own embellishments and intrument inputs.
Visually I hope that Justin Frankell doesn't mind me dropping a bit of treated footage of him having fun with Super 8, he has loads of sessions that he's done on his youtube. Frankell is, for those that don't know, the mastermind behind Reaper itself. One of the good guys.
Here are the main points you need to remember when using Super 8.
It lives on it's own track, you need to connect it to input and output tracks. Think of it like a tape machine.
It doesn't like stereo inputs for some reason.
You can use it as stereo by connecting each track seperately, laborious but it works.
You define loop legnth using the triggers for rec and stop on the first track in a session.
After this, (if properly sync'd) you can set the system to start recording the next layer at the start time of the loop
Specifically using this simple system I have devised there is no need to physically stop recording, perfect loops every time.
I'm planning on using the reverse settings soon, could be fun for making psychedelia and krautrock on the fly.
I hope this is useful to people and sheds a bit of light on the workings of this thing.
it would be possible for me to

you can do stereo ins. i've got mine working great-- all my instruments have a send set up for super8. the trick is that you have to go into the "plugin pin connector" and set it up there. it's in the top right corner of the plugin window where it says "X in/X out", click that and with some trial and error you'll figure it out.

Thanks for the knowledge. I figured it was a glitch and will try that way. Do you mean the window which shows virtual cables?

@@MusicEnthuZone in the top right corner you have a check box for enabling the effect. to the left of that is the effect mix knob. to the left of that is the plugin pin connector matrix button. click on that and another window will come up where along the top you have two matrices, one for in and one for out. the ins, if you want to have a stereo pair which then records to any of the four stereo tracks, then set up inputs 1 & 2 to go 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8. for outputs, you match everything up: 1-1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4, etc. then in the tracks where you'll be outputting from, I/O, have 1/2 from super 8 to 1/2 of track 1, 2/3 of super8 to 1/2 of track 2, etc. hope that clarifies what i meant. :)

Thank you so much. I don't profess to have any definitive answers on all of it. I have a feeling I'll be compiling some of the foibles and workarounds into at least one more video.

I love Reaper and it's the most powerful DAW on planet but man If Reaper gets an UI overhaul including the stock plugins like super8 etc. It's gonna take over the world.

Preach. It's perfect apart from how it looks. Most flexible DAW, got to be.

@@MusicEnthuZone fingers crossed with V7 it's gonna have an overhaul. They were also working on a pro tools/logic style comping workflow in Reaper but way way more flexible and better as usual for everything with Reaper.

What version of Reaper do you have? How do you get the Super8 to display in the 2x8 fashion? My version (6.21) displays it as 4x4 whether floating or docked.

@@ranajoyshil Thanks. I guess it must depend on the size of your monitor. I have a 17" laptop.

Sorry, mised your comment. I think it must bemonitorsize dependent. One way to check is plug with HDMI into the TV, see if it behaves differently.
