Happy holidays. I first came over from Canada to visit my relatives in 1972. The market was busier back then for the following reasons. There 2 anchor stores on ther high street (Woolworth's and Marks and Spencers) which drew people to the market. When the Mall was built, there was not much change in the number of vendors having stalls. It started to decline when the pound shops came to the High Street. Gone were they stall holders selling home cleaning products & hygiene products. When M & S and Woolworth;s closed, I started to notice some small decline but there were stalls selling the liquidated products from the closing down sales. When LIDL and ALDIM moved in, it seemed like some of the fruit & veg stalls went. There was a better choices of clothing not the same items at many stalls. Outside of Manze';s you could buy fresh eels, something you would not be able to do todayu.

Markets in 90s was mostly fruit and vegetables. Hundreds of market stools and very busy. Now looks like car boot sale
