I had read his Oregon Trail book and used that as a template to plot my road trip following his descriptions of the roads and highways from St. Joseph. Mo.,, west. I drove out to St. Joseph and followed his travels as much as I coukd going wst across Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Idaho. I've been through Oregon on Interstate Highway 84 so I didn't re drive want I had already been on. Have to say it was a wonderful road trip.
I had dreamed of going down the Mississippi River on a large houseboat but the cost is prohibitive for me. So I just bought his "Life of the Mississippi" and experience it vicariously through his travels.

The Ohio was very dangerous for flatboats in the late 1700's up to the War of 1812. The Shawnee would lie in wait for flatboats and ambush them with large canoes, sometimes they would use white captives to lure flatboats towards the shore. Settlers in Limestone Kentucky (now called Maysville)would often see bodies floating down the river.

Why hasn't anyone taught this talented book writer how to pronounce ORY-GUN?
