How NOT to dressage

  • My thoroughbred gelding Koda had his first dressage competition /outing this week and let just say his inner racehorse came back!
Half of the test was quite beautiful and then somewhere in between he decided he wanted no more dressage.
I managed to stay on and keep him in the arena and score 53% and not even finish last!

I did not even realise this video got so much reaction! Thankyou everyone for your kind words! I had only had this boy 4 months prior to this test and it was his first outing ott! He is naturally an exceptionally nervous horse at outings even now.
I must admit he scared the absolute crap out of me! I don't know how I recovered!
We are now almost 3 years I to our relationship and going strong. Before a minor breakdown we were out competing successfully at medium, but now is happily staying at novice.
If anyone is interested to see him now my Instagram is @myromaqueen 😁

I had a recent dressage debut on my OTTB just like yours. My resulted in a 39%.....glad I'm not the only one with a tantrum throwing horse! Labeled my test and framed it with the caption... "I stayed on!"

Well ridden - you got him back beautifully (I would have gotten off in sheer terror). Fair play to you!!

Other than the spook, the test was very well ridden! You were very persistent with your horse and made a great recovery! But for the halt and salute, your horse could have stood for at least three seconds, it felt kind of rushed. When I clicked on this video I wasn't expecting such a good recovery from a situation that happens with almost every horse in the show ring from time to time! Nice job! 😊👍

I think you dressaged pretty damn well actually! I WISH I had your position in the "oh shit" moments. I'd have been on the ground the first time he tried that crap.

Well done. You got him back on track and finished the test. He seemed like once he got whatever that was out of his system he came nicely back to hand.

I have an OTTB that has only been in training a few months too, and I'm still learning how to ride through these adrenaline spikes. I think you did great, and I adore your persistence! I hope I handle my own "oh shit" moments with even half of your chilliness! Good job.

It's a big thumbs up from me! If that had have been me, I wouldn't have had the guts to stay on him and would have been off like a bride's nightie!! I thought you rode a great test under the circumstances. 8-)

:) we all have those days. BTW., the husband was the photographer? LOL face it, he was worse at the filming than you were at the riding. He can end that grinding noise by loosening the screw on the tripod, hopefully that has been resolved as well as your riding has improved. Put a new video up so we can see it. Have fun, and enjoy your horse.

Looks like he was starting to tie up as he was a coiled spring throughout. The seesawing hands to get his head down should show even the novice he was never in a 'true' frame to begin with. She needs lessons with a real dressage rider/instructor.

    • @sitkarose1
      @sitkarose1  6 років тому +3

Thanks for your advise. He did not tie up. He calmed down after wards and rode another tests completely fine. Also if you had bothered to read any of the other comments you'd know its been 2 years since this test and we compete medium now beautifully with no issue and have been under a professional coach throughout that time. I wasn't sawing his mouth to put him in a frame I was trying to get him to move after his explosion as you could see he wouldn't go. By that point I was really upset and scared and got a bit panicy. No he never was in a real frame because it was out FIRST ever comeption and we were both extremely nervous. I wasn't expecting him to work his best it was mostly for exposure. So again thanks for your concern hope I answered all your questions.

Katrien Swart Yes I am aware our halt was shit. As you can see further in the video I had a very explosive horse I was lucky to get any halt in at all! Don't stress he's a king at it now 💁
