  • There are 2 beaches at Pwllheli, Glan Y Don and South Beach, Glan Y Don stretches for about 3 miles with soft golden sands and sand dunes stretching as far as the Penychain headland, the South Beach is covered by shingle and great for exploring.
There is lots to do at this popular resort so why not check it out and spend a weekend or a week there and take in the sea air.

I never went to Butlins personally but Ness did in the 80’s but she says the one at Pwllheli was ok but even that no longer exists 😊

Penychain is where Butlins was. It’s now Hafan Y Mor, which translates to haven by the sea. I worked there in 1996, I have lovely memories. The last time I went when it was still Butlins was 1998 with my now husband.
One of the reasons it was closed was because the council wouldn’t allow them to put up the skyline tents they have at the remaining 3 sites. Also, there was so much trouble from certain pockets of society that it was very costly to rectify the buildings after fights etc. It’s a shame as it was a great site.
The last time we were at Hafan Y Mor was 2020. There are still some remaining buildings from the Butlins days. The last batch of staff accommodation was still there, but looking very sorry for itself. The building I worked in still survives, it’s now the owners bar and restaurant/ HMS Glendower pub. There were some of the basic chalets left, and some of the middle grade ones, which we stayed in. There are some other buildings that were Butlins ones that have been re-purposed, like the grocery shops.

Thanks for the info, we wondered what had happened to it, I never went there but Ness went there on holiday twice many years ago, it’s a shame when these places close.
