I've had a Disco 3 for 5 years by now and would swap it for nothing else but a Disco 4. It takes you wherever you need to go with comfort. On hunting trips I often drive for over 1000 km on asphalt and the rest 10-50 km off-road, and sure you could do the same with a series 3 but you wouldn't enjoy it as much. I've never had any issues with the electronics but I do agree it's impossible to fix a discovery on the road.
As someone who used to work on Land Rover, there was rarely any problems with electronics. Most problems that we encountered were caused by people who didn't know what they were doing modifying the vehicle outside of the design parameters.
My thoughts exactly! Its just another thing to go wrong. The defender 90, slightly newer then the series 3 but still pretty much the same vehicle, has been classed as the worlds best off roader, I think its simplicity and the fact that it is reliant on nuts and bolts rather then electrics and buttons has helped to give it that title :)
I honestly used to share your view on electronic systems, and whilst they do require more specialist knowledge to repair, they also have several distinct advantages over Mechanical systems. Firstly there are less moving parts to maintain, allowing a more efficient and effective control of vehicle systems in all operating conditions. The reason a lot of repairs are "expensive" on vehicles with electronic systems comes down to one thing: Training... Misdiagnosis is the #1 cause of expensive repair
Love Land Rover but I miss when they offered and fitted the Discovery with full on brush guard grills instead of this sort of eye-liner they slap on the lights :/
Hi, Sorry about that. It appears in the background at 2:49 and goes out of shot before a brief view again @ 2:50 & then it can be seen again @ 3:03. I can just make out the windscreen hinges which identifies it as a Series 3 & to be true anorak it also has a Deluxe bonnet!
I'm a Discovery 3 Owner, id not want to be without my LR3 when its time to bug out, My LR3has taken me and my family all the way from England to Turkey 2500 miles each way and never missed a beat, we went through the Alps & Bulkan areas too, non stop area of old war torn areas, even refugees would not attempt to stop us or face getting smashed out the way or crushed by a 3 ton LR3 if they laid in the road, only non LR owners write untrue BS about them !
Tour also in eastern Indonesia, precisely in the province of North Maluku with sofifi urban village route to the east Halmahera buli .. thanks. Hopefully realized. Ami .. successful land Rover sport
I disagree with "there are less moving parts" the electronic systems are an addition to the already present essential mechanical systems. All that has changed is a computer using a list of preset arrangements for additional electronic devises on parts of the vehicle. For example the springs, the height can be controlled which is an additional move part and electronic system. If that is damaged in the field your expedition is over. With traditional springs you can be up and running in a few hours
@Lillie1986 Land Rover Was A rover company, i think it was split when ford bought it or before that when bmw bought them, but it was a car made and built by rover
I can see where your coming from but, in the event a sensor of some kind or another fails or as on the 2005 Discovery my brother owns you have to tell the computer that you have changed the rear brake pads otherwise the electronic handbrake doesn't work & other braking issues occur as a result. Electrickery only belongs on the domestic front!
That's a fiar comment. However, as someone that has owned 46 Land Rover products over the last 25yrs from Series 2's, 3's, Lightweights, 90's, Td5 Defender's, Discovery Td5, 200, 300 & a 2003 Range Rover V8 Vogue I can alos speak of experience based upon ownership. Running these vehicles can be expensive & in some cases a matter of life or death. Electronics are fine, but should not be relied upon beyond a 3yr old motor for trustworthy service. Give me mechanical systems everyday of the week.
Too bad about the wheels/tyres on the modern range/discos. I wouldn't want to hit too many rocks with low profile tyres... The silver truck cab landy looks like a series 3 with Defender parts added. The cab is also extended.
Great motor, costs a lot of money, has all the off road technology & should then be superior to any other off-roader. Yet at 2:50, we see an old Series 3 trundling along in support. It hasn't got airbag suspension, coils spring suspension, Terrain Response or any other fancy electronic tricks to rely on just good old Land Rover values! I know which one I would rather be in, the Series 3. Why? Because it doesn't rely on computer's & if it breaks down you can repair it!
No thought landrover is very capable off-road, the problems with it is tha fact that they are unreliable and when it breaks down in nowhere , it cannot be easily fixed. Broke down in a remote mining town in africa and had to stay there for three days and got fixed after getting mechanics from the main city thatb was 200km away and a bill of 2100us dollars. Believe me get a japanese suv, it breaks it can be fixed cheaply, and most mechanics can work on them.
a classic range rover makes it better haha, that car is for "smart people" who likes nature but drive here one week per year. Before TATA land rover was amazing, i'll never forget my V8 vogue !

There is a saying Land Rover owners spend most their times on the side of road fixing the vehicles Land Cruiser owners spend their times on the road driving and enjoying scenery.(yes Land Cruiser is made by Toyota for those of you who didn't know)
Personally, I wouldn't pick a Land Rover as my expedition vehicle. Even though it might not break down, the unreliability would just haunt me. Sorry, LR.
Couldn't agree more ekowrichex and dominodancing on the general unreliability of the Land Rovers, whilst the Defender is still OK (up to a point)! "The Undisputed King of Offroad" Toyota Landcruiser (from 60 series, 70 series and the LC200 series twin e-VNT V8) are far more reliable, durable and capable for the long haul....
YamUzu250 This reliability issue is nothing more than an old stereotype. The disco 4 is a very reliable car, with brilliant off-road capability, whilst simultaneously being extremely comfortable. The land cruiser is
Matthew Alford Wrong, wrong, wrong. It has been Toyota and the Landrover who have domintated world wide 4x4. Even the old Peugeot passenger car has been used to traverse more of Africa than Jeep ever has. Jeep may be the first choice in the USA but USA aint the world. Look at any serious off road or extreme or remote adventuring show from around the world, rarely if ever will they use a Jeep. They are just not good enough or relaible enough. That plus the only recent use of diesel power. Jeep have a poor reliability record and the only decent model is the Wrangler. Problem with the wrangler is that its too compromised in its design and offers absolutely no advantage over a Patrol, a Landcruiser or a Landrover. This is why only Americans buy the wrangler in significant numbers. The rest of the world buys the more flexible and capable Japanese and British offerings.

Such a brilliant car, country and people

Awesome. A rooftop tent would’ve topped it off. I love mine on my Disco 4!
Driving through that jungle makes for some great video
That's great adventure, love nature and your trip
It is far from a stock Series 3 mind, king cab, coil sprung with ARB lockers front and rear with a nice PTO sat up front. Serious bit of kit!
That would actually be a cool vacation! They should maybe team up and hotel with range river and these guides and take people out on these trips!
Love Land Rover but I miss when they offered and fitted the Discovery with full on brush guard grills instead of this sort of eye-liner they slap on the lights :/

@DingleZilla TRUE! like the old land cruiser are better then the new ones!
It's Engineered to be the best All Terrain/ All Climate SUV in the 🌎, hence- why I own the LR 4.
The Utility Guy
Does not beat a Range Rover 2007
just awsm car ! I want that job !!!!! :)
Love the way TataS has turned them around!
yuupp i know!! but my question is the land rover is better than the range rover?? in terms of quality!
3:22 mark - a Toyota support vehicle LOL!
Toyota is epic in the jungle along with Jeep.
I mean yeah, when the land rover overheats and blows a head gasket how else are they gonna get out?
Fielder5757 and the rest of you. Hmmmmmm. Why is its bonnet open😮
I am awfully impressed!
Tour also in eastern Indonesia, precisely in the province of North Maluku with sofifi urban village route to the east Halmahera buli .. thanks. Hopefully realized. Ami .. successful land Rover sport
Wich is better RANGE ROVER OR LAND ROVER?
Its a $80000 vehicle. If you don't mind deep scratches on the skin, it's yours. Make sure all electronics still function in 7 years and beyond.
I disagree with "there are less moving parts" the electronic systems are an addition to the already present essential mechanical systems. I owned one LR4 let me tell you something is a badass well made SUV. Is like a tank 4x4 all terrain amazing machine!

Professional travel writer? How the hell do i become one of those? Get paid to travel and drive Land Rovers? I'm fucking in!
What?
Rafiquee Ara The dude in the video, his occupation...
professional travel writer that a sweet job lol !
Which is better, a toothbrush or a keyboard?
2:31 Yeah, like that's ever gonna happen...
νικος γιώργος mnjk
I rather take the Defender if going through the tropical jungle. The LR4 is less hardcore but still off-road worthy though.
Imagine how funny it would of been if the crankshaft destroyed itself like has happened to thousands of TDV6 owners.
you cant help but notice how every expedition like this, the support car is always a...
True

3 series at 2.50? I didn't see one. Rear wheel drive - lovely cars but a nightmare off road or in snow/
the river is from the show gap year (the setting even hotel)
I wonder how many cars they used to produce these minutes..
What about the scratches.....
Where they disappear
@Lillie1986 i didn't say it was rover, i said it was a rover company like vauxhall and opel are a gm company and Ferrari is a fiat company
It will be on the scrap heap now after breaking down! I wonder how many D4s they used!
Too bad about the wheels/tyres on the modern range/discos. I wouldn't want to hit too many rocks with low profile tyres... The silver truck cab landy looks like a series 3 with Defender parts added. The cab is also extended.

Google IP67, very waterpoof is your answer! Every part of the disco electrical system is waterproofed to near IP67...
Still don't think you'd want to risk 40k of luxury vehicle in such extreme off-road conditions - classic Defender would be much better!

Jeeps have been dominating the jungles of the world for almost 100 years....
Rubbish a Landrover has always been the first vehicle that tribes in the Amazon ever saw, Jeeps always follow Landrover mainly on tow ropes. :-)
jeeps are more unreliable than landrovrr and are no where near as capable

Jeeps invented the suv terdyota and land poser cant even come close, why do you think there are jeep trails jackass lmao!
jeep thing jeeps are cheap unreliable plastic. they were OK back in the day but now there pretty terrible. a landrover is way more capable.
