  • Navy boot camp in sound and pictures...
    Millions of men went through Recruit Training Command, Naval Training Center, San Diego, California, from 1923 until 1997, when the base was closed.
    Jostens, Inc., produced and Rainbo Records manufactured this featured recording, which was combined with images from Jostens' boot camp memory book called "The Anchor," from the 1960s and '70s.

    Ahh, the memories. I went in in Oct 1967, Company 621. Company Commander was Chief Fuhr. We were his last company before he retired. We were standing on the 'grinder' when it snowed for the first time in years. I remember the USS Never Sail, lugging those 9 plus pound M-1 Garand's during the never ending marching. I am 70 years old and can still march if I had to. I can also still do the 16 count manual. I still have my Blue Jacket Manual and, believe it or not, i still have one of my original white hats. One of my least fond memories was doing our laundry on those concrete wash tables out behind the barracks with scrub brushes and a bottle of Wisk. I also hated having to tie my clothes to the line with those damned string stays. We had 3 guys screw up really bad in our company and they left, only to be seen a few days later in the 40/50 detail. If you listened real close, late at night, you could hear the Marines training at MCRD, even though it was a couple miles away. We definitely had it easier than they did.

    Company 369, Sept 1972, Chief Quartermaster J. Waller, was Company Commander. I am also a Sanchez. There were two Sanchez's in our boot company. I went on to Radioman School, then DATC/FMAG PAC (called SIMA now) at 32nd street San Diego where I became a Storekeeper. The Navy puts you where the Navy needs you.

    Company 584, August 1969. CC was Chief Gibson. It was so hot out on the grinder, guys were passing out. I remember sitting on a bench outside the barracks shining my shoes while watching the Marines run around a lot. They were building new barracks at that time, but they still put us in one of the old barracks. I remember playing Shuffleboard on the washracks with brushes and having to tie our laundry with square knots.

    Like anybody who has gone through basic training you have lots of memories, that will last you for the rest of your life. I was in Company 180 summer of 1973. CC was Chief Canterbury, whom I found out died about 6 years after we graduated. He was a tuff CC but fair. I remember him saying on his first speech he gave us that he was "flag crazy". I did not know what he meant at the time, but I sure did find out later! He had us "grinding" sometimes on Sunday when our sister company was relaxing in the barracks. But we did win a lot of flags and awards. We got to spend a day at Disneyland and got to see the San Diego Padres play a baseball game. If he learned your name it was either because you were good, or a screw up. He never knew my name.

  • @TheDocSanchez
    @TheDocSanchez  14 років тому +1

    When the CC finally came wandering across the grinder toward us (every bit as full as we were), he noticed bulging pockets. Instant inspection.
    Of course he found 30 lbs of fruit and nuts, which he tried in vain to collect in his barracks cover.
    He marched us back to the barracks and PT'd us for an hour and a half. A couple guys lost lunch. I kept it down, but paid the price for eating so darn much.
    It was worth it!

      I too was in boot camp in San Diego in the summer of 1968 and I remember that 40 50 punishment. I witnessed a guy having to carry two buckets and several guys right in his face making him run in place while they drilled him hard! I went on to my first ship USS Rehoboth Home ported at San Francisco. Two years later I was shipped out to Hawaii and boarded the USS Reclaimer. @kblackav8or I agree I could never understand why there is Navy boot camp in great lakes, you would have thought San Diego, Norfolk or Mayport would be the place to have navy bootcamp

    Company 209, 1986. We pretty much sucked...didn't win any stars or awards, so the day before graduation, our company commander, an old OS1, brought in a pocket full of them, and stuck them all over our flag. Literally, we were his last duty...he retired the day after we graduated, so I don't think he cared too much about the fact that we suddenly had more awards than even the drill company. lol
