Company 584, August 1969. CC was Chief Gibson. It was so hot out on the grinder, guys were passing out. I remember sitting on a bench outside the barracks shining my shoes while watching the Marines run around a lot. They were building new barracks at that time, but they still put us in one of the old barracks. I remember playing Shuffleboard on the washracks with brushes and having to tie our laundry with square knots.

Great memories! Aug. To Nov. 1966. Companies 455 and 473. Spent time in the infirmary with a case of cellulitis so was set back to a new company. Still have my copy of the Anchor from Co. 473. Hope someday to track down a copy of the Anchor 1966 Co. 473. Served 26 months on Admirals staff at COMCRUDESLANT Newport, RI and a year at MACV headquarters in Vietnam. Now dealing with hairy cell leukemia - Agent Orange. First diagnosed and treated in 2014 with a relapse in Oct. 2021.

I was in company 304 1972 San Diego California. I was the RCPO until I was replaced by another one. I was aboard the USS Jouett DLG -29 1972 after Boot camp and flew from Austin Texas back to Travis Air Force base after my 30 day leave . From Travis Air Force base we flew to the phillipines in a C 130 camouflaged Air plane . Over the phillipines from the window of the C130 I looked down and asked if that was Vietnam. I was told no, it’s PI. I did not know what PI was until I was stationed there in Subic bay US NAV Phil. I remember the long flight.

Firefighting school what fun. I recall a tower with a hose hanging down . The end was a brass nozzle form 2 in down to small. It would just Dance around like a wild thing, they would pick the smallest man out and say go get it. The first guy jumped up and was layed out Flat with a hit to the head. The rifle Range was so much fun . While in the Butt's the other guy and I were talking , I didn't have my foot on the bar . Some PO 1 walked up beheind me and hit me in the head with a 2x4 told me to get my foot on the bar. I'm glad that I had on the steel pot. So does anyone else recall the Black Aiguillettes and Black Flag day's. Company 209 1971 .

I've posted before here, Co 406 - 1972, CC BW Smith EO1, replaced by an entirely forgettable BMC, I believe. As I said, forgettable. Would love to hear stories about this time. We were met at the airport by those leaving after graduation. In the group leaving was a red head who gave us newbies a talk. He basically told us that we would think about going over the fence, and he told us that we should think about it to occupy our time. Haha, but then he told us, "But don't do it, just think about it." Haha, it was a creative use of the downtime in my head. During service week, I was outside the chowhall on the RTC side, policing the trash, when a guy with guy with white shoes ran by. This meant he was being discharged. I couldn't help but wonder so I asked him about it. He told me bluntly that he told them he was gay. Okayyyyy...I got more honesty than I was looking for. Then he quickly added, "Yea, they didn't even check, I'M MARRIED. I just wanted out of here." Then he ran off. It was a sign of the times, I suppose.

1 July 1982 through first half of September I believe. Division 6 Company 104, ABFC Millendez was our CO. I was RCPO, Sam Bars was the RPO1. burned the hell out of my ears all summer marching and standing in the sun. No Leave after bootcamp, right across the street to Fleet ASW Training Center, Pacific. I love San Diego, hate to see that training center gone and now it's all at Great Mistakes.

Was there from Feb to May 1971. It was 13 weeks at the time. Fond memories of my company getting dinged in the middle of the night and having to carry our bunks around the tables in the middle of our barracks. Also spent 4 hours at the 4050 company when I didn't return from our first liberty on time for muster (it was an overnight liberty, I think). Went in a boy, came out a man. I'll never forget my time there or in the Navy. I miss the camaraderie. Where else can you make friends with someone that may save your life or you there's?

Ahh, the memories. I went in in Oct 1967, Company 621. Company Commander was Chief Fuhr. We were his last company before he retired. We were standing on the 'grinder' when it snowed for the first time in years. I remember the USS Never Sail, lugging those 9 plus pound M-1 Garand's during the never ending marching. I am 70 years old and can still march if I had to. I can also still do the 16 count manual. I still have my Blue Jacket Manual and, believe it or not, i still have one of my original white hats. One of my least fond memories was doing our laundry on those concrete wash tables out behind the barracks with scrub brushes and a bottle of Wisk. I also hated having to tie my clothes to the line with those damned string stays. We had 3 guys screw up really bad in our company and they left, only to be seen a few days later in the 40/50 detail. If you listened real close, late at night, you could hear the Marines training at MCRD, even though it was a couple miles away. We definitely had it easier than they did.

Company 190...'The swift, silent and deadly' was our company flag. July to September 1977. Of course, who remembers that we first spent the first two weeks on 'worm island' and then we packed our sea bags and 'marched across the bridge'.... We felt like real 'recruits then! After graduation, went to ABH 'A' School in Lakehurst N.J. then off to US Naval Station MIDWAY Island, then to the Kitty Hawk in Coronado.
