Many of the students who do poorly in schools (or misbehave/fight) come from parents who did poorly while they were in school. The parents don't really know how to parent and don't always understand how to encourage and help their child when it comes to their studies. So, at home, the kids are exposed to parents bad-mouthing their teachers and schools, showing apathy towards their child's achievements, and being too busy to be able to put much effort into it anyway. Of course all that's going to be carried into the classroom and the cycle continues. I know of what I speak. My parent and step-parent were poorly educated, and both worked, and never got involved in their children's school activities unless one of us was getting in trouble. Luckily, I was able to work my way beyond that.
Ann Coulter already told him that to his face. He's also been on college campuses, where black students have told him the same thing. Well, he is not lying. Most Americans from the US cannot find a county in a world map. The fact is the US is not on top of the list when it comes to education.
I agree! Let's invest in the American children and education system by creating vocational schools (plumbers, electricians, construction workers, heavy equipment operators), public safety schools (police, EMT, firefighters, doctors and health sciences), beauty/fashion schools and Engineering/AI/ IT schools. These schools all start in high school.

This panel tends to forget how capitalism works. It isn't about getting the best workers for the job, it's about getting the best workers for the job who can do it cheaper.
American Capitalism = hire highly skilled from other countries so they can pay lower wages. At the same time fleece the people that buy the product to pocket billions in profits. For what? Power, more yachts, millions $ homes, to extort workers of their pay, keep lower and middle class down, etc.
This goes so much deeper. I would really love for these ladies to get people who have actually taught in the classroom in on a live panel to ask these questions and really truly have the courage to answer these questions without fear of losing their job. This would be more than an hour long to dig into what our expectations truly are as a nation. Seriously, we need true discussion and listening. This is more than telling kids what they can't do. That never works. Everyone deserves their dreams. It's how we begin. What needs to happen is an overall system rehaul where a STEM and STEAM curriculum is interwoven with the expectations of what we need our children to do. You cannot just expect a human to meet a standard and not apply critical thinking. That is what state standards do. And it is all for the benefit of a vote or lack of a vote. The beauty of STEM and STEAM is that when it is interwoven properly with the arts you get a person who sees big picture, knows how to collaborate, knows how to communicate, and can apply a process level thinking which is so much more precious than meeting an assessment. We also need to be pushing back for the blue collar jobs that really are the lifeblood of a community. These are not "bad jobs" these are amazing jobs. These people have skills, know their craft, and have the ability to teach. Give them where credit is due. I've been teaching for 23 years and I can tell you that the expectations in this country for education have considerably lowered. A lot of it has to do with politicians their expectations and what they agree to lobbyists is important for your children to know. In other words your children are easier to manipulate than you are because they are not given the same level of education that you were. Like I said this goes deep.
This is the result of the decades of underfunding and undervaluing education in this country. Being educated, knowing two or more languages, being well traveled, etc is looked upon as snobbish in alot of middle America.
Yup, people who are as you stated are called elitists and snobs and all kinds of things. If I tell people my resume, I've been accused of lying and witness such a level of insecurity and defensiveness that I try not to even speak of it much anymore. What we are seeing is an almost comical full circle coming on where the side that pressured society to become more stupid and distrustful of experts and facts (partly because they know the college educated demographic usual votes blue and stupid people are easier to exploit and manipulate) now wants to stop all immigrants including the highly skilled ones (which the Right likes to exploit) so that we can keep these jobs for Americans many of whom have been dumbed down and we don't have enough qualified to fill those highly skilled jobs. The Right also faces a dilemma that they would also have to actually pay higher wages to American workers in those jobs so I'm not sure they have really thought things through or are just unreasonably all about wanting their cake and eating it too. The even more comical part is a stupid, low paid society won't be competitive in the world and also won't be able to sustain the wealthy fat bank accounts of these super rich people like vivek and elon. Honestly, the circle goes round and round with these guys on the Right. Bless their little hearts, I guess.
I didn't even mention the part of the circle where Project 2025 and all its thugs want to keep women, even educated and skilled ones, from working and higher education in favor of taking up more "traditional" roles of being barefoot and pregnant at home in the kitchen. The irony of everything is hilariously sad.
It’s up to the parents Joy. Teachers can only do so much even if they are paid $100,000 a year. Parents have dropped the ball the last couple generations.
And what is your evidence in that? What studies do you have on that subject? Nothing? Then I guess your parents failed in teaching you critical thinking skills.
@KL-cy1wc I'm sorry to say it but teaching is a part time job you got winter break spring break all summer off I get paid hourly so what I work is what I get maybe teachers should do it that way they would probably end up making less than they do now I can't stand when people say they need to make more money
What Sara said about cultural differences of the mentality of Indian and Asian immigrants to entitled and non-appreciative Americans 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 👏🏾 It’s shown CLEARLY in the difference in both family and career success.
@ The difference is culture and mentality. It’s like comparing American-born blacks and their children to African and Caribbean immigrants and their children. The massive gap in success is the culture. American blacks have a culture of victimhood whereas other blacks have a culture of working hard, taking advantage of any opportunity, being thankful and not blaming society for their own failures.

Most of us went on to graduate from college or vocational institutions. The problem is we're never a focal point in this type of discussion or for people like you. It's always the same old negative tropes. What you're presenting is only a small part of the Black American lived experience, one which apparently you're really not familiar with at all.
Alyssa.... money is not the goal for everyone. Education is important in any pursuit. For 40 years the ed system has stopped teaching and been measuring. When my son came home with a spelling test that was 8right 6 wrong I asked him why he didn't study the words and he said "oh, thats not how they do it, they just want to know who knows how to spell already" Same problem with hospitals... seeking information rather than providing information.
We throw more money at education than any other country and have some of the worst results. If you want to see our priorities, go to the salaries for your state universities and compare the salaries of athletic coaches versus professors. It's ridiculous. Parents are wholly responsible and need to be invested in their children's education. Most young people want to be social media influencers.
Really? Why do some states excel in educational standards? There is a listing of all d 50 states indicating highest achievements to lowest. That alone will explain the dumbing down of America.
Feeling like these ladies are missing the mark on a lot of topics these days 😅 comparing American students to Chinese ones…Chinese students aren’t lacking culture! They go to school and study many subjects, not just STEM Alyssa. They put preform students in other countries BECAUSE they are well rounded yet extracurriculars are first on the chomping block for many American schools. Invest in public schools and the nation will flourish!!
You ask a kid nowadays how to tell the time on a CLOCK, they don’t know how!! Children indeed need more academic structure. Less sleepovers & social media.
Young women have not been encouraged to display intelligence throughout history. I was a military brat so I grew up going to 9 different schools in 7 different locations. In all of them I felt like I had to hide the fact that I got the highest grades in order to be tolerated by my classmates. Those students did not appreciate being told the grades would not be "graded on a curve" because there was a student in their class who had scored 100%. I even got harsh looks for that while getting a graduate degree. And no guy likes the smart girl unless he's a really smart guy. We must change the attitude of this culture to encourage study and academic achievement in females! Tell the little girls "It's OK if you know the answer and he doesn't. Raise your hand and speak up."
Speaking as someone who deals with education, the seed of education starts at home with the parent and then is watered by the educational system. The educational system in the past 20 years, has continually cut resources which then cut necessities for the students (trades, economics). All the ladies have points but overall Alyssa and Sarah are the two that seem to get the problem the most. This country does NOT value true education.
Bringing the best people from other countries "so that the best companies come here" still won't help Americans advance into top positions IF THEY WEREN'T EDUCATED TO DO THE WORK THE JOBS DEMAND IN THE FIRST PLACE. We need to prioritize our educational system and prepare our children to compete academically so that they can advance professionally. Otherwise, all I'm hearing is a plan for billionaires to continue raking in profits on the backs of people shipped in to be indentured servants, while Americans are left out of the loop.

I'm a first generation American. There's two side to the argument. 1. Yes, prioritizing your kids developing useful skills and want to put in the work matters. You cannot expect society to do this for you. American parents need to stop expecting someone else will do the parenting you aren't doing. 2. Yes, the rich are exploiting these visas to hire cheaper labor. They use this to simply save money. Not all, but some are. 3. Americans imo, are generally entitled and lazy. I'm sorry, I've worked along many and....the nonsense I hear. Most don't want liveable wages, they want above it starting. Go to any construction site in America and see who is standing around gossiping and who is in the trenches.
The one and only time I agree with Vivek. As a teacher of 40 years, I have seen the dumbing down of the education system so students can pass standardized tests. Students look for the easy way out of doing their work and rely on calculators and AI to do their work for them. They want everything to be a game and fun. I tell my students that expecting everything to be fun will not prepare them for life. If they get a job and it isn't fun, they quit? Sadly, that is the case with some young Americans I know. If I had to use one word to describe American students it would be "lazy".
I’ve worked with underprivileged youths in the past and I can see that but I also see a lot of younger people when they go into the work force not accepting abuse in the same way that my generation was taught to. We can also learn a lot from today’s younger generation too.
Sometimes I just wish Alyssa would take the day off. She never lets people finish speaking what they want to speak without injecting her predictable opinion.

I have a 11 year old grandson and worked in his middle school as a teacher's aide for a short time last year. This was in Gardner Kansas, a very conservative community south of Kansas City. EVERY SINGLE KID with one or 2 female exceptions ALL think they are going to make millions as GAMERS. Kids of all socio-economic background live in their basements playing video games ever waking moment. THAT, in my opinion, is the ROOT CAUSE of so many problems in this country. Parents blame the schools and the teachers while they are spending their free time watching football, shopping or spending time entertaining their spoiled kids. I was there, I saw it.
I’m not say teachers don’t deserve more. I’m just wondering how paying them more will make them better educators. I want to be paid more but, I will work just as hard either way. No shade at teachers, just confused.
I think the idea is that increasing pay for teachers would induce more people to want to enter the teaching profession. And a larger pool of applicants should include better educators.

Pushing a child to do more than graduate high school should not solely be placed on K-12 teachers - it must also be pushed by the actual parents at home… those whom should be setting a example for those kids. Many, many parents think it is not their job and that is why kids don’t pursue a secondary education. This is coming from someone raised in a Republican family from Tennessee. Not one person in my family pushed me to do better education-wise.

Here’s the bottom line. Remember back in the 90’s and 2000’s call center jobs were shipped to India and the Philippines. Not because Americans couldn’t do the jobs, but because of corporations want to save money. Now they are doing the reverse flooding high tech paying jobs with cheap Indian labor. The visa holders get paid less, don’t complain because they will lose their job and be deported. All the jobs that were lost at twitter were American jobs. The people left, visa holders that will be worked into the ground. Just for the record. I am 1st gen Indian. My father came here on a student visa in the 70s and applied for citizenship. He was a mechanic.
I know a few of those folks with work visas. They’re highly smart and get the job done. It is a cultural thing, cause most American parents don’t push their kids like Indian/Asian/Latino parents do. It is also an education thing. America is so behind on education and I noticed every state has a different curriculum which makes it even worse.
I think she means that a better paying salary would attract quality teachers. Not necessarily that the current ones are holding back. More so that they are paying out of pocket for supplies, have crowded classrooms and are most likely always overwhelmed.

Alyssa never understands the point, there are a lot of Americans who went to college and studied coding and studied computers but they are not getting hired because the tech people want H1B visas so that these people cannot make complaints or ask for better wages or time off
This topic is very deep for the Indians willing to leave their family and work in US. They are mostly 1st generation with a degree and from below middle class. They study so hard and through poverty. Any money is big money for them to come out of poverty. They are smart and hardworking. India does not want their youth to leave. All the tech in US can sure be done in India.
For your information, this isn't a cultural issue-it's about access to resources. MOST Asian immigrants work in blue-collar or minimum-wage jobs. In contrast, H-1B Asian workers often come from families with significant wealth and have access to resources that most of their Asian immigrant peers lack.
The issue isn't cultural differences; it's that countries like India and China have been significantly increasing their federal budgets for free higher education and providing more resources for students. A key factor to note is that many H-1B workers come from generational wealth and have access to opportunities in their home countries that many of their peers do not. In contrast, here in the U.S., Congressional Republicans have been working to cut funding for free education, forcing many students into significant debt just to pursue higher education. This lack of support creates a disincentive for pursuing advanced degrees, particularly in STEM fields.
There is an education problem in America. So many different things need to be done to fix it. Parents need to see the importance of education and after school programs more. I've seen free mentoring programs and parents don't invest or send their kids.
I thought the original point was that American prioritizes, and glorifies sports over education. I feel like Sarah was the only one to stay on topic, and the rest used the segment to complain about how bad the education system is. As comedian Russell Peters humorously pointed out, perhaps it's time to push children harder to excel academically.

The problem is that we're afraid to fail kids so everyone passes the grade automatically
Totally agree and when that same child goes into the workplace they expect the same because that's how they were brought up.
BINGO

The ladies are missing the point. No one is calling others dumb. They are saying we are falling behind.

This is so incredibly interesting. Sunny and Whoopi have the maga view on h1b
I do as well. I’m going to take care of my own first and foremost.

AND, with all due respect.., whoopi, putting this all on low paying teacher is a sliver of the problem. PARENTS must take the Lead on what is going on in their kids lives.

I know a few of those folks with work visas. They’re highly smart and get the job done. It is a cultural thing, cause most American parents don’t push their kids like Indian/Asian/Latino parents do.
