Disclosure is not only standard practice in the fine art & collectable market, but a provenance (documented history) _adds value_ to a work because it is a guard against fraud.... collectors _and_ investors value disclosure.
The key difference between card alteration and fine art restoration is that one seeks to deceive the buyer in the short-term while the other aims to preserve the work (and its value) over the long-term. No-one knows better than a restorer just how much damage improper cleaning & handling can do over time.... that's why the products & techniques they use are tried & tested both in practice _and_ in a lab,
Frankly, any fine art restorer would be _horrified_ by the types of heavy-handed & untested "treatments" that people subject these cards to.
It sounds like PSA might finally be waking up to the legal ramifications of their "hands-off" attitude... wilful ignorance may work in a niche hobby where cards are worth a few hundred bucks, but it's not going to fly when you're doing big business selling a professional evaluation that can be used to facilitate fraud in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars.

You are altering the top most layer of paint to get that glassy finish. That being said if car paint guys look at it as altering the surface i don't understand why card guys cant grasp that concept! I wonder 10 years from now the real damage that all these guys are doing to cards will show up.

Thanks for amplifying Rattle. Yes, any touchup or removal of a card is altering it. In MTG, if you ink a card (like many did in the 90's), then it is at best moderately played or very good and many would even consider it damaged. I do not like having any altered cards and I know the grading card companies still grade many altered cards - I am assuming unintentionally. Many grading companies have tried to combat this, but often charge customers for false positives for alterations. I have had a few pack fresh cards sent back to me as "altered". I then had to pay a resubmission fee to get the correct grading. Like you state, fine art or not - it needs to be disclosed if any altering was performed.

Hopefully they figure this out sooner than later and there is a good window from when the submissions started and to when it gets cracked down on to help people know what cards to avoid if skeptical.
As some others have said though I don't think this should be shunned as bad if restoring but made a different colored PSA label with all the same qualifiers of a normal PSA graded card that way people can still restore and preserve if that is their end goal and not just to make a quick buck off someone.

Why not introduce the same to card trading? Also there needs to be an invisible tagging done to the cards to give them a unique number that can be tracked just like lab made diamonds because once someone receives a rejection by company X they will go to company Y

Now I've opened up this can. I'll go one step further. I restore old cars. If there is a plastic interior panel that is perfect but is dried out because it is dehydrated from the years of sitting, I have to re-hydrate that panel. So one is saying I am not allowed to do that? The 1973 Topps set is notorious for having a dry fuzzy edging. If you take the tiniest bit of water and touch up that edge, the fuzziness goes away and that edge is tight again.

Agree with cutting, trimming, painting etc. Disagree with polish, cleaning or streaming those have been a mainstay with other collectables like comics and never was seen as alteration. Not done it myself don't have the skill and wouldn't trust myself to not damage it.

Removing material off the sides of a card by trimming isn't similar to removing material from the surface by polishing?
It's disclosed on the label when comics are altered.

But no problem with cleaning a card and making a better condition and removal of flaws is fair not disguising

It’s over as it’s an easy catch if they look for it now in every card. AI can catch every card. Takes one program and a few machines. Google can easily make this PSA if they want it. The tech is there. The magnification on this tech is so great that you cannot hide even 1/1000th of inch cut in the card or use a chemical on it as it leaves a residual that can be picked up at a certain magnification. Maybe 6-12 months you have left before you can’t get it passed. CGC does this with comics just not in the magnification level which they will need for cards. Good luck not trying to scam people

Hello, Im a Conservator at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, as a card collector myself im not upset at all at kurts products, I have done a chemical analysis on the spray that he uses and its not bad, we use a much more robust mix of chemicals then any of his products, he uses what we call a basic mix ive used that mix for over 37 years, we let the newbies start with that, its absolutely safe for the long term of the card, now as to the ethics of restoring cards to make them look as best as possible im ok with it as long as the restoring has been done properly but others may disagree.
In my opinion grading cards is a scam, it is there opinion that the card is an 8 or 9 depending on how that person feels that day. I'm pretty sure non of the graders at any of these company's have ever handled a priceless work of art and the pressure of restoring it so my opinion is that they are not qualified to make that type of judgement.
Please learn the difference between restoring and altering.
