The organ sounds very different now as the reverberation has increased dramatically. I understand this is due to all the sound absorbing plaster being removed from the building in 2015.

What a find! This is a pure gem. I, for one, had never heard Dr Rose play the organ before (except to accompany) and this is such a revelation. Not only was he a brilliant choir trainer but an awesome organist. Thank you so much for this new insight into one of the greats.

You're welcome! And he's still playing, at the age of 80-something...

May I butt in please? Barry's recording of Franck's Choral No. 3 in A minor is a must! Available on this channel!

Thank you. I look forward to hearing it. I have never been to Guildford but, looking at photos of the organ case, it doesn't look that large and I wonder where the two 32 foot stops were situated? Anyone know?

PS like this version of the Air from Suite No. 3 by the great JSB (groan these rhymes get worse and worse need to get some poetry within me PPS did the cathedral choir ever record "Hail Poetry" from "The Pirates of Penzance"?)

The choir did have some G&S in its repertoire, for use at the occasional secular concert, but none of it was ever recorded, unfortunately.

Like I said someone ought to write a pastiche Chorale Prelude on that tune in the style of JSB then we might have something worth while...

It's the sort of thing Gavin Williams might have done when he was sub-organist at Guildford...

Really!! He must have been a very interesting man to meet and know. Of course, another man very good at making up chorale preludes was joseph Cooper, presenter of "Face The Music". I remember him playing well-known tunes in the style of well-known composers and he once played a very fine chorale prelude on "Winchester Old" on the Christmas edition of FTM (1974). Brilliant man and he was a friend of Sir David...
