    This is incredibly helpful! I had trained in Kendo for a year in a dojo, however my sensei was...also new to using a sword, and I've largely been training myself ever since, with Bokken's.
    I recently bought a proper, real katana to train with, and I felt there were a few missing things with my form, things that other sources online have entirely breezed past, which you covered!
    I feel far more confident in training with more proper form now!

  • @JosephKerr27
    @JosephKerr27 2 роки тому +20

    On uchi-chiburi, the reason why the blade seems like it may cut Kazu's hand is because his left leg/hip needed to move back. Like Shogo demonstrated, drawing and sheathing require complimentary movements with both hands and hips. Many mistakes can be corrected by slowing down and focusing on the fundamentals.

    spatial awareness is imperative when doing this indoors. make sure you are a fair distance from walls and objects behind and that your saya is clear of obstacles. katanas were not designed for indoors combat, so obviously it's difficult to handle in that situation. low hanging lights or shelves can be problematic too. i would recommend that if you are training indoors, before you start swinging the sword, you carefully move it around yourself and check for any possible collisions.
    another advice would be that if you do end up hitting something, do not panic. hold on to the sword, try to keep it where it is and don't react by jerking the sword away or letting go of it. you will either destroy more things that way or potentially end up wounding yourself if it drops towards you.
    last, but not least, check your sword for rattles before you start swinging it. if you're skipping maintenance, your mekugis may be coming loose and you could end up throwing the blade from the tsuka across the room with a swing. that has the potential of killing someone, so be extremely careful.

    I think when sheathing the most common injuries encountered is stabbing the webbing on your left hand. Even though these are Iaito, they are still pointy. The one I have is not also made of zinc alloy but is actually a carbon steel already but unsharpened too.
    Again thank you for these. I think I really find it limiting that some schools really discourage teaching when you're not like someone appointed by the masters and the learners then in return question a school authenticity due to this too.
    I've yet to watch the Hakama video and I don't have a proper Obi for the dogi, and the proper placement of the Sageo.

    I have a short, straight katana that's been sitting on top of the bookcase for years now. It's sharp, but I've never cut anything with it since it rattles a bit. Still, this inspired me to take it down and practice drawing, sheathing and swinging the blade. I found that it's quite the workout, even just a few minutes of playing around made me out of breath. I'm going to start practicing these basics and get to know my cheap blade. Thank you, Shogo sensei! :D

    I spent all of quarantine of 2020 in my garden every day training and learning katana but spent the years after back being empty hand karate at my dojo when we got to reopen. I'm dedicating 2023 to picking up my katana to train again in my garden but because I'm in the UK the weather is often a bit crap so being able to do these drills in my living room will be very helpful thank you 👊

    The fascinating thing is you can see even in these basic movements of sheathing the sword where they will help develop the coordination, dexterity, and focus to make you successful in learning Iaido. Thank you.

    Once I became familiar with the weight and proper techniques it almost feels like the weight of the sword guides itself. The history and tradition of the katana fascinates me. As cliché as it sounds times seems to fly when I’m training and relaxes me in a way I can’t put into words. I can be a very anxious person a lot of the time, but when I’m training, the focus that is required seems to block everything else out. There are times I am drenched in sweat but feel completely comfortable and relaxed. The respect that this weapon demands (especially when using a sharpened blade) lets me block out everyday stress as focus on confident, and fluid movements. The way I feel during a work out honestly feels like therapy to me. This has caused me to treat my katana with a sort of reverence. To the point, I even feel relaxed when oiling the blade or just admiring the sheer beauty and craftsmanship put into these weapons. I can’t be the only one that feels this way because some thing about these swords just feels magical for lack of a better term.
