The first time I heard this song, it was sang by Mick Moloney. It was wonderful on first hearing. Very glad to have found this version. I think I'll play along often, right here.
There will never be "peace" in the north, or in places such as Glasgow town for that matter........just luls and cease fires and broken agreements...... heh just look at the news from glasgow and belfast over the past week lol....also if a brexit happens the boarder will be back.......and with it so will all the paramilitaries whove been on vacation since '98
Having spent my childhood growing up just about a safe distance from 'the troubles' in Northern Ireland but still hearing about its human tragedies every day on the radio at news time the images the bulletins conjoured up in my head of lost loved ones and crying families standing over graves i used to wonder how these people coped with the continuous uncertainty and fear. When i first heard this song i knew it was very special and for years it has been one of my favourite songs of all times.
Finally it annoys me when singers take a great song like this and smash its story apart to sing chosen 'clean' bits and pieces from it! They seem not to either care or realise that its much more than words- its the story of life at the time, of tragic loss of innocent victims on both sides and of how lucky their friend was to be the one still here to share this with us in Song. Tommy it a pleasure to listen to your words and to sing it in its entirety and i hope one day to do it justice.
This song was definitely a life changer for me as I was learning about the power of song for good in the world as a young listener. Still makes me weep. Incredibly powerful -- Thank you Tommy!!
we are still killing one another, even to this very day......... fuck all has changed......people still dying, and well the only difference between scotland and ireland are the tools of trade thats about it, but youll be quite hard pressed Maria to see Glasgow or the north of ireland ever at "peace"
Super, I have seen and heard him with his daughter and son in Ratingen, Deutschland. It was really a GREAT concert. Some songs sad, some happy - and all excellent songs performed by excellent artsts.
Its only now that i have discovered how personal this song is to Tommy Sands and definitely nobody does it like Tommy. It is a fact that only those that have lived through those days in Northern ireland can truly feel in their heart what Tommys words profess or understand the full extent of what happened. Sometimes i have to laugh when i hear outsiders (and i am one) push strong opinions on either side on what happened in Northern Ireland for what do we know about what it was truly like!!
I heard Tommy sing this years ago in the Seven Stars pub at the Maidenhead folk club. I still have the CD I bought off him that evening. (Which also contained such brilliant ones as "Humpty Dumpty Was Pushed"). Between the songs, he told us some of the grim practicalities of life in Northern Irelend such as checking the graffiti in the toilets to see what flavour of pub you're in and making yourself scarce if it's the wrong one. May those days never return.
Its going to take a long time for full true peace to wind its way into the hearts of all those affected by the history of Northern Ireland and overcome the traditional hatreds. And may the Lord bless all those by whatever means they know let it be through art, politics, music, songs like this, speaking to neighbours, but in some small way now tries to move this peace forward, regardless to whatever involvement on either side they may or may not have had in the past, let us support their goal!
That is awesome. Your granddad is a very special person. You should ask him to write a song for you and then, one day, you will be on a stage singing about the people in your country and all people in the world. My name is Tommy, too, by the way. All the best.
This song will never cease to pierce my heart. Bless you, Tommy.

Love connects us all ...thank you for this lovely wake-up-song and your wonderful music full of wisdom, HOPE and LOVE, but most of all of PEACE.
