Glad I found this vid, thank you for it, I have my first tpw on now. Made some turbo cider in the past, but looking forward to getting this stuff in my first run of this pot 😃 (used t500 so just planning to give it a damned good citric acid and wash through then just go for it)
Jesse - you have totally hooked me. I have my 3rd birdwatchers wash fermenting now. I love your channel and have found amazing tips and inspiration here. Buccaneer Bobs Rum was a hit with me as well. I saved about a gallon of backset in a plastic jug and in 3 weeks it nearly exploded. Is this normal I am going to do another rum run next and was hoping to use this backset to add complexity but I am concerned with how fizzy it is? Anyone else experience super carbonated rum backset?
Hey Jessie. First timer here. I did a 50/50 vinegar run. Then sacrificial alcohol run with the free turbo yeast i was given. Doing a run now with inverted sugar wash. But im getting a unpleasant smell. Wondering if i stressed out the yeast. I used dady and fermax at recommend dosing but had slow to none fermentation so doubled up on dosing
Hi Jesse, another great vid. I found your tasting notes on the FFV very interesting. I've just made some really nice Gin with FFV. Not much left after Christmas and NY. The botanicals included Star Anise and orange and lime. The Gin had a very forward aniseed flavour, although not overpowering. Maybe the FFV enhances this flavour? Everyone really loved it. Got my next batch on the go now. Cheers.
Weet-Bix, the breakfast cereal, was developed by Bennison Osborne in Sydney, Australia in the mid-1920s. Osborne set out to make a product more palatable than "Granose", a biscuit that was marketed by the Sanitarium Health Food Company at that time.Although Weet-Bix was not a New Zealand invention, it prospered as a popular breakfast food in New Zealand. In Timespanner, the Osborne descendants claim again that 'Daddy [Bennison Osborne] invented Weetbix [sic] in NSW'.
Sounds like the FFV should be put on some maple wood or medium toast oak. Have you considered running your neutral spirits over acid washed charcoal? You can use the riser off your still to hold the charcoal, use a couple of coffee filters on the bottom and leave enough head room so that you can turn a bottle upside down and it will drain on its own. I received that, thank you very much for helping with my hobby. Great video, again thanks.
Ayyye awesome. The smaller stuff is NZ Manuka my man. A native wood similar to tea tree. Great for smoking, interesting for ageing. Heads up that oak was not weatherd as much as the stuff I used.
I wish I could be in Texas when you're here. I have wondered , but you never mention that I've seen, on whether you add washing soda ( sodium carbonate) to break down the ethyl acetate during the spirit run.
Sorry I missed you in Austin, had a bad Rugby accident and broke 7 bones in my cheek/nose. Had the surgery on Monday, guess Ill retire to just making spirits... Next time in US for sure
If you can pass by Montreal, I would be honored to welcome you to my house with a great Italian dinner ... (I'm Italian ..!) And I would have something to show you that you would be left speechless ..! ceers mate..you the best, keep the awesome work going.!
Try this. Take 3-4kg of potatoes and boil the living poop out of them "fall apart" pour that into 20l of cold water, the potatoes heat is enough to heat the water. Add 4kg of sugar and mash the potatoes until sugar is desolved, when cooled down enough add 3 packets of bread yeast "we get them in 15g packets is SA". Different makes of yeast do better with the potatoes. It gets very hot here in the summer, about 3 days fermentation time. This stuff foams a lot.
@@StillIt it's more to do with the taste. Never tested the starch after fermentation or anything . I distill it wen the mash has a slightly sweet taste still to it.
Love the Vids keep them coming. If you wanna make a neutral that smashes "birdwatchers" try a Kale wash. 6kgs Dextrose, 100 gms pureed Kale and 90 Grams bread yeast. You'll never make birdwatchers again. Cheers.
I know this video is ancient so I hope you catch wind of this post. Can you tell me about or point me to a video that describes the thing over your right shoulder.. specifically something cut into the copper column I see? Is it a gin basket?
Do you carbon filter any of your spirits? Have you thought about using a lapel Mic instead of the mic on the camera? You get less of the echo from your shed.
Hi mate, nope I never have. I'm going to give it a crack sometime soon tho. Yeah I have a list of gear I want to buy, including a mic and proper led lights. Waiting until after the USA trip. Need to save the cash for that.
Hey. I'm from South Africa and Weet-Bix is definitely a thing here. I used the same weight of Weet-Bix in my FFV recipe as called for in the HD FFV recipe and it does taste amazing. The smell of wheat is prominent and makes you want to smell it again! The taste is as you describe it: "smooth". I don't get any of the other citrus of liquorice notes though. The FFV was my first ever reflux spirit and thanks for all the info you put out there for me to get to a great drinkable product !! The ingredients of Weet-Bix in South Africa is as follows: See the website: bokomo.co.za/our-products/weetbix-biscuits/ Ingredients: Whole wheat (gluten) (97%), sugar, salt, barley malt extract (gluten), vitamins (B1, B2, B3) and electrolytic iron.
Another great video Jessie, keep up the good work! Hey listen man, can I get you to stop giving the old “this“ and “that quote? As I actually happened to be a blind home distiller; it would’ve been much easier for me if you just said “birdwatchers “and or “fast ferment vodka quote. See what I’m saying? Thanks, still it rocks!
You can keep ya wheat bix... and place them in your chilly bin. You new zeelanders need to work on how you say the word lemon. Nice hair cut BTW. Looks good mate.
@@StillIt that distillery is kind of in the boonies. Should do a day trip to Central Austin and enjoy our beautiful city!! Lots of little dives and brew pubs around!!
On this topic is it possible to get over ripe fruit and boile it safe to use? If so Jesse go hit up an orchid for there not for market stock. Normally they sell it really cheap to big companies, or turn it to juice but you could probably get a whole crate for cheap?
The ffv sounds much better to me. Vodka shouldn't be tasteless and odourless, legal definitions be damned. Birdwatchers sounds like a great gin base (hint hint). Edit: should've waited to the end to comment :-)
