hands down agree with being genki! Also, I didn’t notice the idea of being the novelty teacher before. It’s something to think about! Thanks for that! (I’m a SHS JET with one base school and 7 visit schools)

Glad you got something out of this! 😁 Oh dang! From what I've heard since posting it's much rarer to have soamy as a SHS ALT. Do you have a rural or urban placement?

@@jakubtansey716 Kinda in the middle. It's a city that feels like a town. lol (btw, I'm in Hokkaido so most cities here feel like that)

    5 schools 😱 that's crazy. I thought having 2-3 was a lot. I really enjoyed this video.

Honestly....this will probably be me once I’m in Japan, so this was very informative for me. I’m a 2020 JET still waiting for my departure date. But from what I was told, my city doesn’t do base schools. We report directly to the BOE, so an office in City Hall is our “base” when we’re not out teaching a lesson in our assigned schools. I was told the norm for my area is being assigned 3-5 schools per ALT.

I'm sorry you've had to wait so long to come here 😖 Hopefully soon 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻 At least you sound hella prepared though!

I will also be getting 5 schools when I end up in Japan. Two High schools, a middle school and an elementary school. When we first got to meet our Consulate at my College, I was told we could have anywhere from 1-20 different schools. I thought I was getting below average with just five XD. I love the advice given, it really helps me to plan things out. This was super informative, thanks!! ^.^

From the people who've spoken to be simce posting this I think I'm realising that for elementary and junior ALTs, more schools is quite common. I just happen almost exclusively know senior high school ALTs for which I think it's much more rare. Sounds like you're in for an interesting time!

UPDATE: So, from speaking to people since posting this, it seems among elementary and junior high schools, having 5 or even more schools is quite common. I'm kinda in a bubble I feel since 99% of ALTs I know are senior high school like me, for which it's rare to have 2-3 assigned schools. One ALT told me about someone they knew with 20!! Regardless, I feel like it's not something people consider when applying for JET... Is having this many schools something you even considered? Would you still be just as excited for JET if you were put in this situation?

Wow! This lady must be so organized! What a saint! I have to ask about pay though- are you and she paid the same despite her working almost double the classes you do? Is there any way to negotiate or request more accommodations or reimbursements to help balance everything a bit?

    • @jakubtansey716

I didn't speak about that with her but I'm pretty sure all JET's have the same contract/pay and so on. We technically have the name amount of working hours, she's just busier for them... I highly doubt negotiations would be possible, especially because the actual Japanese teachers work insane amounts of overtime compared to us and our employers are the same...
