I have worked at a city Park and Recreation Department in Massachusetts for 30 years and in charge of a Beautification Program that I started. I also had a crew of about 2 to 3 employees to help plant and maintain over 70 sites and 150 planted beds. I started up a Volunteer Program to supplement the need for more workers to help take care of all those sites. The program included many different groups that really wanted to help and to learn about ways to grow plants, to learn about insects and soil composition. We enjoyed working with everyone from 2 years old to unlimited age. We talked about pollinators and we set up about 2 dozen bee boxes for Singletary Bees at municipal vegetable and flower gardens. We encouraged residents to NOT use PESTICIDES but to use natural ways for control. We had a compost dump to breakdown yard waste and to encourage the use of safe compost. We made compost “lasagna style gardens and added earth worms to turn everything over and break it down. The local Donut shop saved their coffee and tea grounds for us and we added those to the gardens and planted beds. I am so happy to hear of this project of adding ZOO POO to the composted soils and landscape wastes. KEEP IT GOING !!
