    I have a couple of suggestions:
    1 if you have sponge filters from your main tank you can squeeze them into some water and add that so called dirt to the daphnia tank they will love it.
    2 temperatures above 72 tend to slow down their multiplication so keeping it below that and above 67 will help them boom for you.
    3 my cultures I dose twice a month the new water I add with one drop per gallon of calcium. and I use green water in a drip system. culturing the algae water in a open top 5 gallon plastic bottle above their tank with a permanent light on that so algae continues to grow you allow some to drip into their tank from time to time keeping them fed but not giving them access to all the algae where they would just multiply to max and crash.

    You’re totally right about them being sensitive to water. When you’re doing the change ups, either use river water or spring water as opposed to tap that contains chemicals. I love my little culture and I can’t wait for it to grow!!

    Daphnia are a great food for all your fresh water fish. They are filter feeders so they are cleaning the water in the tank at the same time that they are available for your fish. They are a excellent source of ruffage and if you have some fish that are skiddish or bully's the daphnia can occupy the fishes time and attention. To avoid a culture crash set up two cultures. The dry yeast should be mixed with a little warm water and allowed to get active before feeding the culture, don't feed them again until the water is clear.

    Oh daphnia! I love daphnia! I've never actually kept them, I do eventually want to try, but I did study them in some freshwater bio classes at the university. If I remember correctly, the littler ones are not juveniles, they're the males. The females are big egg filled fatties and the boys are pretty insignificant in size. Daphnia are often used by scientists as a sort of water sentinel species. They are really quite sensitive to water quality and that's why cultures will suddenly crash. So if you can get them on a drip, I would. You already know they're filter feeders and you're feeding them the right stuff. Looks like you have the largest species of them also. So keep us updated on this one! I've always wanted to try these, have never gotten around to it and now it's on my "to do" list for after I move.

      getting them on a drip line will be my first priority then! thanks. let me know after you move, i'm sure i'll still have them.

    you might get stacking sieve system for daphnia like you do for brine shrimp so you can get smaller size for small fish

    I also use air lift tubes one in each corner to keep the food in perminant suspension with a sponge filter in the middle

    Question--I've seen references to only keeping daphnia with an airline, no filter--clearly, this sponge filter is working fine with these magna, and they're not getting sucked in. Do you think moina would also be fine with a sponge filter?

    I think I've read they are actually more prolific in cooler water. Upper 60s are ideal for them I think. Too warm and they can't thrive

    I have developed a way of processing daphnia eggs and collect them into powder form. I have mailed these eggs to those who wanted them. The powdered could be stored for months until being hatched by simply placing them in water.

    I'm interested for sure! I had considered the self cloning crayfish as a food source. but this is way better. Can you feed them some sort of protein, or is that green powder a source of protein for your fish?

    • @gregjonesonline
      @gregjonesonline  10 років тому +3

      yeast is 9% protein, spirulina powder is 70% protein, live daphina are 50% protein without gut-loading, so you can pump them up pretty high.

    you might want to also for a different gut load with spiraluna powder I had bought some nutra rose powder. i had also fed both nutra rose and spiraluna powder to my micro worms and they ate it and never had lost any.

    Hello, Thank you for the video, and I have a question, I have a culture a daphnia that I just received and I have them in the container, big enough, but them seem to be swimming desperate in the surface at the edge which is facing the window, in the indications it says "do not put them directly in to the sun light" but it seems to me that they wants light, could anyone give me an idea or suggest me what to do?
    Thank you very much

  • @JamesThoenes

    Maybe stupid question, but how do you do a water change without sucking half of them out?

    • @gregjonesonline
      @gregjonesonline  10 років тому +5

      i'm going to use an open cell polyether filter foam as an overflow pre-filter which should keep them out. They also head towards the light, so i could place a strong light on the opposite end of the tank if i needed to siphon junk off the bottom

    Rain water, fill a bucket with rain water let it stay under the sun for a day then place it in a tank, feed your daphnia with yeast once a day every 3days

  • @andygold

    I have a comment, but not about the daphnia. It appears that your stand could be an issue. All the weight of the tank is being supported by the nails/screws that you are using. You should probably install some wood in between your top and bottom frames so that the frames are resting on wood and not on fasteners.

    • @gregjonesonline
      @gregjonesonline  9 років тому

      Thanks for the concern, all of my larger stands are properly braced, the load on this stand was light enough to not include additional supports
