I really hate how some bikes are labeled "beginner". Makes it sound like they should have training wheels. I personally have the Marlin 8, and I love it.
Absolutely agree with you, to me a beginer bike is usually just a couple hundred bucks and from brands like appollo and the like and vertainly NOT a 600 - 700 buck trek. i believe the marlin 5 is very much a serious mountain bike, trek wouldnt put their name to something that is a low cost begginer if it has trek written on the frame then you are buying a serious bit of kit just like with bmw and lamborghini the higher the spec the more money it will cost but by no means is this a beginer. ive been mountainbiking 35 yrs.
This is my first real bike, Trek Marlin 5. I upgraded the tires to Maxis 29in 2.30 DHR II (tubeless). Much grippier! I’m thinking of upgrading the handlebars, OneUp Carbon Handlebars 35mm. Do you think that 35 mm is too much of a rise?
The tires are great upgrade! I am looking at changing mine. OneUp handlebars are great. You will sit more upright if you go for the 35mm rise so it really depends how you like to ride. I have some steep uphills in my area so I prefer lower handlebars to put more weight on the front tire. I hope that helps! I’m happy to chat more.
I could not go bigger than a 2.3 tire because any larger of a tire tread would not fit the rim that came with Marlin 5, this according to Maxis tires. Trek agreed and said any larger and the tire would hit the chain in the lowest gear. So I got what I could and it’s really sticky and a lot more fun than the tires that came with it. A lot more fun! I’ve done some research and thinking about what you said and I’ve decided to get a new handlebar but stick to the 20 to 25 mm rise range (you talked me out of the 35mm rise). I have a bad back and I think this is a good compromise. I realized that my stem only fits a 31.8mm diameter handlebar. So alas, I will be unable to go with the OneUp carbon handlebar, as it is a 35mm diameter stem size. I would appreciate if you had any suggestions for a carbon handlebar that fits a 31.8. And has around a 25 mm rise. Thanks buddy!
@@mandoogamoose Race Face has the Next carbon handlebar with 31.8 diameter. Look into those. There are other options online like Chain Reaction that you can look into. Good luck with your search! 👍🏼
I love the bike mine is grey I use it to commute to work and do some trails by my house and its great.
I love the Marlin! It’s an all around bike - from commuting to trails!

That is far from being a beginner bike. I have the Marlin 5. That is a beginner bike. Marlin 8 is sick dude! Mazel tov!

Pero no todos pueden conseguir bicicletas tan caras . Recuerda que tambien hay que comer ...
And now I have a Roscoe 9 because I pushed my Marlin 8 literally to its breaking point. I guess that's why it's considered a beginner bike!
Very good review
Thank you!
Sounds like a decent trail bike.
Nice bell

According to Trek, the maximum tire size supported by the Marlin frame is 29x2.20".
Hi, I've heard the brakes make a bit of noise, is yours the same?
Hi Josh, not yet unless the discs are wet. It can also be dirty. Clean your discs from time to time.
Mine does not.
Mine does
