I'm 71 years old and have been crocheting for 60 years. I thought I knew pretty much everything there is to know about crochet. Ha! I've always been unhappy with the look of joining new colors no matter how careful I am. Can't wait to use this excellent method. Guess you really can teach an old dog a new trick.
I've only been crocheting for about a year and a half, but I don't understand why we're not taught standing stitches as standard from the beginning. Same with turning chains. Chaining 3 for a UK treble leaves such ugly and bulky gapping because it's taller than the stitches that follow, and they're clearly not a stitch. I'm so grateful to have found tutorials like this early in the game so it can form as a natural technique for me. Thank you! 🧶
I've been crocheting for almost 50 years and I discovered this method about 10 years ago. It really does make the final "product" look so much better! The only thing I don't like about it is that the final "loop" gets pulled so big and "uneven" to the other stitches - especially with the longer stitches like doubles and trebles (US).
It's a great technique isn't it! 😊 I find if you use the knife hold to hold your hook you can use your index finger to hold the loops, and this can help stop them become too big.
Hi Sarah-Jayne. Great tutorial! I love these types of stitches! I rarely ever join a new color with any knot. I’ve seen a few variations and I love the look they make. I must say though that when you did it with the knot coming out on top it looked very neat and clean! Thank you for sharing!💞
You’re welcome, I’m glad you like it! 😊 You can’t use this particular method to start with, but why not take a look at my chainless foundation tutorial here: ua-cam.com/video/lj-LeERBoes/v-deo.html 😊
Lots of people find making chain stitches easier, but also if you were continuing using the same yarn at the beginning of each row or round you would need to chain as normal, otherwise you would end up with lots of extra ends to sew in 😊
I need to know where you got that crochet hook! I bought some that were similarly shaped for my RA on Amazon but they’re very flimsy & bend too much when I work with them.
This hook was part of a set that was sold as part of the Bella Coco Range when I worked with The Crochet Society, if you check there website out they may have similar ones :)
Where do I buy your crochet hooks Bella? I found your crochet hook stand on Amazon which I ordered now I would love to have some of those hooks to go with the stand.
These were available when I worked with the Crochet Society, I no longer work with them so you would have to check their website to see if they are still available :)
If you are continuing with the same colour I would recommend chaining as normal, unless you want to cut your yarn and join it again; standing stitches work great for adding a new colour or starting a new ball of yarn 😊
But how does one make a standing dble treble of a half dbl tr after slipdtitching in first stitch of the round just worked and you have to start the next round with the same colour?
I was reading someplace this can be used in place of a normal turning chain when you're not changing colors or starting a new skein. Is that true? How?
Ok so here's my problem when I create the standing stitch without the knot , when I have to crochet into that stitch on my way back around , I'm finding the stitch is extremely lose and looks as though it will come out almost like there's nothing anchoring it down ughh
You’ll find that the top of the standing stitch is much looser compared to one with a knot, but if you hold the end of the yarn and give it a little pull you can tighten it, and once you sew in the end it will stay nice and secure 😊
When you are calling single crochets, double crochet, 1:38, are you using UK terms or US terms. For me those are single crochet, but you are calling them double.

Thanks! I will definitely start doing my stitches this way. Much neater looking.
It can be a real game changer 🙌🏼
Diffently a much cleaner look. Thank you for an easy to follow tip.
You are very welcome :)
Extremely helpful! I appreciate you explaining in both US & UK stitch names while performing various stitches. And your bracelets are very pretty. :)
Thank you so much :)
This is a very good video. I will definitely try this. I like the clean edge rather than the knot at the bottom. ❤😊
Glad it was helpful :)
❤ great tip, my new way to change colors! Thank you!

This was amazing. Thank you so much. I’ll definitely use it. Could you use it to start? Not doing the chain at the start. Going straight into it. ❤

Brilliant! 👍🥳 Why didn't I think of that! 😉
Thanks! 😃
super!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖💖
Since this looks so much better, what's the advantage of doing a chain over using a standing stitch?
Lots of people find making chain stitches easier, but also if you were continuing using the same yarn at the beginning of each row or round you would need to chain as normal, otherwise you would end up with lots of extra ends to sew in 😊
@@bellacococrochet I thought perhaps you could use some sort of standing stick instead of a chain, when using the same yarn 🙂
I will give this a try! I wonder how to do this whilst going in a round?
If you’re changing colours you can do this in exactly the same way as you would when working flat 😊
Magnífico👏💐

Can this be used at the beginning of rows where you are continuing with the same color? So you already have a loop on your hook.
If you are continuing with the same colour I would recommend chaining as normal, unless you want to cut your yarn and join it again; standing stitches work great for adding a new colour or starting a new ball of yarn 😊
Can you use this method when using a 6 wt yarn. Thank you.
Yes, this method can be used with any weight yarn 🥰
But how does one make a standing dble treble of a half dbl tr after slipdtitching in first stitch of the round just worked and you have to start the next round with the same colour?
I was reading someplace this can be used in place of a normal turning chain when you're not changing colors or starting a new skein. Is that true? How?
Yes it can; you would have to raise your hook slightly to bring the loop to the correct height and then go straight into working the first stitch 😊
Can you tell me what kind of hook you were using?
This is one of the hooks from my Bella Coco Range - crochetsociety.co.uk/products/bella-coco-athena-crochet-hooks-case/ :)
what if my row ends on a slip stitch? should i still do a "ch 1 and turn" or is there a standing slip stitch as well?
If your row ends on a slip stitch you can end your row and turn your work as normal 😊 You’ll work standing stitches at the beginning of the row.
Ok so here's my problem when I create the standing stitch without the knot , when I have to crochet into that stitch on my way back around , I'm finding the stitch is extremely lose and looks as though it will come out almost like there's nothing anchoring it down ughh

What I really need to learn is how to get straight edges like I'm so confused

I always talk in UK terms. So yes, my double crochet is your single crochet x
