    Oh dude this is absolutely brilliant! I remember watching SSTV video of Shelby Rollins doing this exercise but she never got in depth like you did here so thank you so much for talking about this exercise in depth! Will give this a go once my wisdom toothache goes away. Been dealing with wisdom toothache for the past couple of days so I haven't been singing cause of it.

    I have a question: Is it a problem that I still belt during performances when I try to develop mixed voice and I've couldn't do it yet?
    I thought maybe my voice can't get used to the cordination when it's still belting all the time I'm singing full songs.

    Ok seriously... so.. you are getting into an NG arl ch of the tongue.. then you are dropping the back. This is opening this space/track behind the lifted tongue. You also talk about when you go up... to feel it is opening up through the top of the head and down below the tongue. This sounds like you are moving that arched tongue much more forward. The reason I am obsessing on this is EVERY teacher says I have a "swallowed tongue". they did the hold your tongue and sing and lots of other strange things. but you seem to be REALLY playing around in this same space that no teach really fixed on me. So... this is FASCINATING!

    that's interesting for sure. i have been able to get those overtones for awhile and just thought it was cool. but i stuggled sounding like you with that free sound. i feel like i can augment my chest with some head resonance and that allows me to get up to around a d5 with a ton of power and not that much strain...but it's never sounded free like yours where it just seems like you can go higher and higher and the onyl thing that changes is that it gets headier ( like whne you sang the "when a man loves a women" all the way up at the eb5") when i go up to that level if i lighten it up it cracks or i have to push to the point where it becomes uncomfortable. i feel pretty decent about my voice because i can go from about a g2 to a d5 in a strong appealing sound...but up above that b4 or so there is more push and less freedom than i'd like. i hope i can find that extra head resonance someday! lots of other teachers teach it like the 80s hair metal sound which i can kinda do but to me that just sounds like really compressed head voice. yours so clearly has that connection to your chest. if i get some money i might have to try hard to get some lessons with you.

      Thanks so much! Yes you will get it. I did not always have high notes like I do now. Lots of practice and open mindedness have led me to feel like I can sing as high as I want. I'm still a work in progress though too! There is always another level whether it be technical or stylistic. This is why i love the voice so much, it seems you can never exhaust it's possibilities. Keep working at it and you will get it.

    Hey Tyler, great video!
    I seem to have a problem with root tongue tension as in a lot. I've already looked at your video for singing without tension, but I cant seem to make it go away. Do you have any specific exercises to target root tongue tension??
    And is there supposed to be a little resistance when you press up underneth the soft spot jaw or non is it suppose to stay completely relaxed throughout the entire range?
    Best regards Nicklas

    Hey Tyler, your videos are REALLY helpful! But I don´t understand one thing: I can get the first formant on the second or on the first harmonic in one register, e.g. in head voice. It only depends on the vowel (ah/oo) and it does not depend on head or chest voice, I´ve tried this in Voiceprint. Does this fit to your theory? THANX for teaching us so much!! Oliver

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 років тому

      Yes!! you are opening a can of worms here! I'm finding that registration has a lot more to do with how we perceive sound so as long as you are amplifying the first Harmonic no matter the laryngeal mode it will sound like head voice! Really interesting stuff and a whole world of discovery there.

  • @CorneliusHDybdahl
    @CorneliusHDybdahl 5 років тому +2

    You mentioned the second formant is very important for the mixed voice. What do you do with the second formant? Do you tune it to the third harmonic?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 років тому +1

      Depending on the vowel it will boost either the 3, 4, 5, or even occasionally the 6 Harmonic.

    • @CorneliusHDybdahl
      @CorneliusHDybdahl 5 років тому +1

      @@tylerwysong Silly me, I should've known haha. But do you then tune to these harmonics according to the vowel? Like would it be a good idea to practise maintaining vowel couplings in the higher range involving the second formant?

    • @tylerwysong
      @tylerwysong  5 років тому +1

      @@CorneliusHDybdahl It depends, I mainly allow the vowel to dictate which harmonic will be boosted, for example for an "Ee" vowel it wouldn't make sense to tune the second formant to the 3rd harmonic in fact it wouldn't sound like an "Ee" at all anymore. So my answer is it depends.

    • @CorneliusHDybdahl
      @CorneliusHDybdahl 5 років тому

      @@tylerwysong right but I meant is it a good idea to practise maintaining the same formant coupling for a given vowel across different pitches in the upper range? Like suppose an /i/ had an F2 around H7, would it be a good idea to tune F2 such that it couples strongly to H7 for /i/?
