This is really the most beautiful song that I know. It makes me cry every time. I heard it for the first time many years ago in the night at the radio and was so impressed that in few weeks I bought all his CD's. Thank you, Tom!
@@luked.bensley1157 😂Actually, I listen to music all the time, I bought many hundreds of CDs and I like different kinds of music, not just this song. But TW is TW!
Lianne Anderson we are in our 70s we were excited and thrilled and amused to see & hear Tom for this appearance on TV since then he has always been special to our family. thank you for your unique talents Tom
I love him so much! He's been my favorite since the 70s. Such a genius rare talent!!!! I travel great distances to see him live, and it sure is worth it!!!!
Pure bliss! I so love him, I will never get sick of him. I have loved him since the "70s and this song after hearing it a ton of times still gives me chills and tears.
'It is such a old feeling The fields are soft and green It is memories that I am stealing Bur you are innocent when you dream' Words are difficult to get if English is not your native language... But Tom Waits is so moving, I can't keep now to play it again and again... To the man I love!
I was Blessed with seeing Tom at the Beacon Theather in NYC with Leon Redbone.Tom was has Always captured my imagination since the first time I heard him and I Love his still!
Man that just brought back some serious memories! Tom was the man when I was in college. This video tells me that I have to update my Tom Waits collection. I have tons of his albums on LP and no record player!
Ok so I looked it up and it is him. This is 20 years old. Making me feel old, because I clearly remember buying this album around the time it came out.
All the so called musical stars should queue up and see this man and see how it,s done. Most probably the best in the business. He never fails to bring a smile to my face or a tear to my eye. Different league !
I once did something similar to my ex girlfriend, only I spoke with a Smeagul/Gollem-voice and said:"Now I can whisper sweet little words in your ear, in the dark."
We all "steal" memories by being there. Memories that would have been better without our presence as the heartbreaker. But we are innocent in the intentions of being the lover...innocent when we dream, that is.
When newspaper headlines and the daily 6-midnight grind starts to get me down, I stumble over Tom Waits, his name takes on new meaning knowing how he truly waits, patiently, for me to re-stumble over him and he sings his whisky soaked philosophy and eat it up with a dirty spoon.
Wow, he looks so young here and yet he sounds so old! You definitely have to have a different taste to enjoy Tom Wiaits. He reminds me of an old blues singer. As gravelly as his voice sounds, it comes from somewhere deep where only demons dare reside.
@@stephenthompson6031 ehhh no. vaguely similar vocal style and he supposedly got into death metal around the time of Bone Machine but death metal has a very clear lineage that has nothing to do with Tom
Kit Palmer I’m pretty sure Waits was ahead of the “death metal” curve. Lol I’m not sure what “lineage” you speak of...but Waits was gutturally singing, well before Metal. Does your definition of “lineage” stem from Zeppelin or Sabbath? Or are you, naively, going to reference Dylan (who, now, tries to mimic Waits)? Lol Who was it, brought in the guttural vocal sound for “death metal”? Who was it introduced Tom Waits, to his own voice? What is the lineage? Generation by generation...please tell me!!
Kit Palmer And the “supposedly got into death metal” comment. Lol Try “Heartattack and Vine” and “Swordfish Trombone”. If you refuse to hear Metal vocals (and music), you really are tone deaf. I get you wanting to hold onto Pantera’s (they were a hair band until Metallica gave them a boost) theme...but Tom Waits is the farthest thing from “Pop” music possible. Actually, he’s more anti-pop than Pantera. Sure, he allows covers...that goes with his musical talent. But, do you see anybody covering his most creative songs? Nope. Who covers Metal songs? 90% of Waits is Metal...merely because of his voice. Quit listening for the shred and listen for the similarity. His vocals are the shred and the instruments are the “coming down”.
once as i was leaving a commune in virginia, a man who i had somehow failed to meet the entire time i was there sang this song to me in the back of the van, and then i sang him shiver me timbers, and then he told me that wireless internet makes it very difficult if not impossible to do magic in north america.
Waits has a distinctive voice, described by critic Daniel Durchholz as sounding "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car." How very accurate!
This is my karaoke (Larne a few years ago was a particular triumph). The pubs never have any backing, but once you rehearse the rest of the pub, it flows naturally. Everyone assumes this must have been written a hundred years ago. They get it very quickly and chastise those that don't join in.
+Oviraptor78 I didn't, but when i heard the song in the movie, i smiled, like i always do, when his music is in movies or shows. Last time was on the fifth episode on the recent X-Files. Always a great feeling.
+Robert Gubbi Check out "Down by Law", "Night on Earth" and "Coffee and Cigarettes" from Jim Jarmusch. All movies with (or with the music of) Tom Waits. Also Smoke and Blue in the Face are in the same spirit as Jarmuschs Movies. :)
I’m amazed at Tom’s ability to be both an incredible lyricist and also wildly experimental arranger. He is a very complete artist.
I loved Tom Waits since I was 13. I’m soon 45 now and the love just increase. This song and this performance is the best I ever heard.
Me to its just a perfect song, we should have been friends.
One of the absolute great singer songwriters. A great artist.
This is really the most beautiful song that I know. It makes me cry every time. I heard it for the first time many years ago in the night at the radio and was so impressed that in few weeks I bought all his CD's. Thank you, Tom!

This song has such an odd but deep emotional resonance. It always catches me off guard.
One of the few true "Artists" in the music world. He isn't out to make money or become famous, it has always been about the music
I've watched this video countless times and it's fascination never leaves me. Just love the voice, performance, lyrics ... perfect Tom Waits.

I watch this almost everyday. What an amazingly powerful voice he has.

Really appreciate this song
Before I went out to celebrate my 30th Birthday I just wanted to do one thing that made me really really happy - this was it and I'm so glad I did. :)
Definitly the only song I want for my funeral
His interview on Fernwood Tonight" with Martin Mull? Excellent episode, just to see two folks havin' a VERY normal chat with humour!
one of the songs of my life
"You are innocent when you dream" is such a nice sentence...
Just wanted to point out that the video reply by "Peyrson" is one of the loveliest Waits covers ever. Don't miss it. :)
Great song.
ya another great storytelling
I don't even like this, yet I can't turn it off. I think I'll listen for a while longer
my dad's favorite too...by extension mine, since i grew up listening to this :) pure genius. along with dylan, the last true poet
I sing this to my daughter as a lullaby. The nurses in the hospital thought it was a very pretty song.
Yes. Tom Waits is yes.
I think I've said this before about Waits, it's so weird, it's good. :) He sure grows on ya.

I'm sure he'd learn how to do death metal gutturals properly in just one week. I love this guy.
