By coincidence I just bought a Merkur Progress too. It was what my grandfather shaved with, so in a fit of nostalgia I got one. Love the ivory plastic knob - it is iconic.
Great shave Johan despite loading it without aligning the triangle and the mark. I love the feedback of the progress it is an excellent adjustable. Have a great weekend. Very best regards Gordon 👍👌👊
Fantastic shave my friend. I’m sure using the Progress for the first time would be a chore for most people unfamiliar with how it works. I don’t have one and have not used one, but I have seen a few people on video explain the nuances of them.
Good Shave Johan, I have a Progress and absolutely love it, especially for head shaves. I usually do 3 passes, setting 3.5 wtg and xtg. then setting 2 atg. The milder settings are great, especially when shaving atg around your mouth and chin. I find if the setting is too aggressive, then it will 'catch' and cut very easy. Take care! Stay Safe! 💈🪒🍁
You have to always make sure that the arrow and the notch on the head/top cap are aligned. You're very brave to use the Metkur blade. They are not my favorite.
That was my first DE razor; used for head shaving; I still have it and enjoy using it (got the large handle). I usually use it 3-4.5. On one side make sure the triangle in the bottom *head* coincides with the line on the top cap (must wear glasses). I put the topcap on the sink, load a blade and then mate the razor with it...and start turning the know till its closed (upside down). Then adjust according to taste. Btw those Merkur blades are not very smooth.
It IS the dot that's the indicator: once it's tightened complely, it'll be ust above the 1. Also, the head needs to be aligned properly. When it's on one and you can see the indicator dot, on the bottom on the lright-hand side of the head is a small triangle. This should align with the line on the side of the top cap. The first time I used mine (with the longer handle) it felt rough. Now it feels quite smooth but efficient It could be a candidate for a daily driver. Forward - in all diirections! Vorwärts! BTW, Iamcdb is one who strarts on the lowest setting.
How do I work this thing? You put on your lederhosen and it all becomes clear. The Merkur Progress was introduced in 1956 and has remained largely true to the original design with minor tweaks in the construction over the years. It is one of the earliest adjustable DE razors. The only adjustable that I know of which predates this one is the Gibbs Adjustable, which was introduced in the late 1930's, if memory serves. Some enthusiasts rank the performance of the Merkur Progress above even the vaunted Gillette fat boy and slim adjustable razors. Other's are bothered by the fiddly adjustment issues with this razor in stock form, and the variability from one example to another. This has prompted a cottage industry in tweaking these razors, as in the Mergress and various replacement knobs that can be used to replace the plastic one. The Parker Variant is clearly inspired by the Merkur Progress.
Thanks! I have seen some replacement knobs...haven't made up my mind on those yet. I think I have now figured out how to operate it and am ready for my Mergress journey.
Well that was a bit painful to watch but I am sure you'll get the hang of it; I see in other comments you are attracting some advice on how the Progress works. It's a nice shaver; I have the same one. Enjoy your new toy! 😀
Sometimes, just sometimes, it maybe be worth watching UA-cam to get an idea before about the razor before confusing the hell out of yourself, much to my amusement.... 🤣 Simple guide, insert the blade, which you got right, align the knotch on the end of the top cap with the triangle in the head and screw it down tight; it should be somewhere near 0 -1 to the dot and adjust it from there 👍
not a good review, u keep asking viewers how to do this, how to do that instead of telling them. also most of the time razor was in your hand below the camera and out of the frame.

Cool. Is it possible to find one which is from the time when your father got his?

Thanks Gordon. I will get better and better at it I hope.
Jason at TRC is such a wonderfully kind and supportive person.
And a good business man it seems

Thanks Brad. A mild setting in the difficult areas makes sense.

Thanks Steve. Just used the blade a second time and it seems alright.
Fine shave Johan, sounds like you had a good week. Have a great weekend
Thanks a lot Tim. The same to you.

Thank you! I like the blade, so I guess it can only get better.
We are witnessing the progress of a confused old man before our very eyes 😂 line up the triangle and the line . Matti will show you🙄
Confused indeed!
It's always exciting to get something in the mail. Unless it's a bill
Even that can be exciting, if it doesn't have your name on it😉🤣

The man gets a new razor and tries his best to break it before shaving with it👍👍👍👍👍
Well almost anyway
@@Shave_n_Butcher you dis really well, all things considered.

Hey Steve. Yes I am a seasoned Progress user now with 3 shaves in my legs. I like it very much.
