- Die klassische Szene aus Faust: Der Prolog im Himmel. Hier werden die Grundlagen der Wette, sowie der Ausgang des ganzen Stücks, erstellt.
Es fehlen hier nur die Versen 287-292
Gustav Gründgens spielt Mephisto in der Inszenierung des Hamburger Schauspielhauses. Die englische Übersetzung ist die Klassische aus dem 19ten Jahrhundert von George Madison Priest. Bis jetzt fand ich keine die besser passt.

English: Here's a scene from the production of Goethe's play Faust. The Prologue in Heaven is probably one of the most important scenes to understand what the play is about. I added the translation (the classic one by George Madison Priest) so that more people can enjoy and appreciate this. Goethe worked on Faust for 60 years, his entire life practically, and it's easily one of the greatest literary works of all time, composed entirely in rhyme. I sometimes wonder why noone took it as a holy book and started a cult with it.
Nach all den Jahren kann ich ganze Passagen immer noch auswendig, nicht zuletzt aufgrund des Films.

Gustav Gründgens' Mephisto is such a timeless performance that I have trouble accepting basically any other take on the role. His magnificent voice and subtle acting are a delight.
He's a great base line teacher for "acting"..

i have looked online for a DVD of Faust with English subtitles but can't find anything. I think you have done something very unique in providing them here. Why not do the whole of part 1 of Faust? Perhaps, if you do one scene at a time (one scene every month, for example, i.e. one scene per video) then it won't feel too daunting. You would provide a great service to German literature, so more people all around the world can appreciate it. I believe it is best appreciated when heard in original German (how Goethe himself wrote it) & with English subtitles. Anyhow, just an idea. You did a great job with the prologue :) Thank you!
I have this on Bluray and I wish it was subtitled in english. My german is not so good.

gründgens einfach nur genial!
Ich bedaure bei der DVD nur, dass das Tempo zu hoch ist. Die Aufnahme auf Schallplatten (deutsche Grammophon) hat das korrekte Tempo und ist dadurch unglaublich beeindruckend. Trotzdem, ein wunderbares Dokument höchster Schauspielkunst. Leider habe ich bisher keinen auch nur annähernd vergleichbaren Mephisto erlebt.

I recently read the English translation by John R. Williams of Faust. But the German version has something the English will never have.
Although the Victorian English version is quite good as well!

How is this so different from the Prolog in Himmel I have? It's Gustav Gründgens etc but it's so entirely different in terms of tempo and accent that I can't believe a couple of years here and there could have done it.
Die neue Übersetzung von David Luke ist ebenfalls sehr schön.

Laura Oswald Mephisto schlägt dem Herrn vor, Faust von seinem rechten Weg abzubringen und ihn mit weltlichen Genüssen zufriedenstellen zu können. Falls ihm das gelinge, stehe ihm Fausts Seele zu. Von vorne rein ist jedoch schon klar, dass der Herr die Wette gewinnt.
