I only remembered the vacuum, and I must've seen that movie several times. Granted, I haven't seen the thing in years, but the plunger barely rings a bell.
I'm a die hard Ghostbusters fan and when I saw Casper as a kid, the Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz cameo blew my mind. I thought it was the coolest thing ever at first but then it actually made me legitimately angry because it made the Ghostbusters come off as weak lol
The US Casper's graphics reminds me of Clock Tower. Also, I think the Japanese Casper Game might have been based on the Casper cartoon released shortly after the film.
I never have any plans on playing any of these games, but I still listen to these videos while at work (in my headphones) lol. I love the nostalgia trip and his commentary: awesome channel 👍🏻 👌🏻
The ps1 game I remember looked amazing and mind blew me at the time. But it was so hard as a kid. I kept getting stuck at a certain and could never figured out what to do or where to go at a point. Had to get items and keys open places up it was like a point an click almost but u controlled Casper and could turn into baseballs and such to do things.
thanks for reviewing Casper!! I never had a chance to play either versions but I love how close to the movie it is! in the mid 90s, I would have freaked out if my bestie had that title. that movie was a big hit, at least in my part of Quebec ;)
The plunger bit is indeed a reference to the movies, iirc, and that boss ghost you showed when discussing it is, again iirc, Casper's like mean older brother ghost? There were 2 others as well.
Thank you for this pair of games. Never was a big Caspar kid growing up but it's good to know the games weren't awful. The Japanese one seems like it would be pretty fun too. Always appreciate your videos!
Didn't know A boy and his blob was a NES game, I played the Wii version around 2010 and really like it (I even played it again with my kid a few months ago). I will check the NES version.
I cannot in good stead, suggest it. The control scheme has momentum in a bad way, and the hit detection is...unforgiving. The game is slightly directionless too.
A Boy and His Blob on NES is still a really impressive game in terms of the size of the world and variety of puzzles, but it's a style of game that doesn't exist any more for good reason. There's multiple ways to get yourself into a position where the game is completely unwinnable, you're frequently expected to learn the layout through trial and error, you're really supposed to be drawing yourself a paper map as you play so it goes better next time, etc. The Wii game is an interesting cross-section of being much less ambitious and also much better. The NES version's hard limits on jelly beans and single massive overworld make for more of a grand adventure feeling than Wii's simple level-based structure. I still kind of hope some day there's something closer to the spirit of the NES game but done right, a big Metroidvania world with an automap, movement upgrades scattered around, etc. A relaxed Metroid game that's entirely puzzle-based is a neat idea that I don't think was ever fully realized.
Japanese version looks similar to Sega's Hauntng Starring Polterguy, without scaring people and possessing furniture. The isometric view and going from room to room is what I'm thinkin of.
From what I've read, Absolute had already gone down under by the time they finished their Casper game so they needed an outside publisher. Since Natsume had the Japanese license for Casper at the time, they were the ones who ultimately published Absolutes Casper game for the west in place of their own. Again, that's what I've read so who knows.
This is one of the first SNES games I tried when I revisited SNES in 2021 to finally play the classics since I missed out in the heyday (I had a SEGA Genesis) and this confused the hell outta me. I had a rough start because my next game was The Tick. Eventually I got to Donkey Kong Country so I'm on a solid path now through discovering the SNES and I thank SNES Drunk for some guidance as around that time I also found this channel ❤
Hey man, I love that you cover short kid oriented games sometimes. It may not be the best for adults but short easy games are perfect to play with my nephews
Fighting the one ghost with a plunger is a reference to a joke made in the movie where a plunger is used on the ghost characters Stretch's face but it was in a scene that lasted only 30 seconds and no further mention of it was made again. I would assume turning into a vacuum cleaner would make more sense but at least it makes you think the devs got to see a rough cut of the movie and tried to make something of it.
Casper on the PSone was so badass. My buddy and I didn’t have a memory card back then and we’d stay up all night racking our brain trying to beat it in one go.
And thanks to this comment I just found out there's more than one Casper game on the PS1. As a kid my brother and I had the game "Casper: Friends Around the World," it was a sort of surprise gift we got on Christmas one year, probably because it was a bargain bin game and our mom knew we liked the Casper movie and she might have wrongly assumed it was a game based on said movie (I think it was based more off of the direct-to-VHS prequel "A Spirited Beginning" to some extent). I legit never knew a game based off the movie came out on the PS1, and looking at footage of it it does look like something a younger me would have liked.
@@BloodRedFox2008 it’s an interesting puzzle/exploration game. Kinda like Metroid with the additional powers you get allowing you to access new parts of the mansion.

SNES drunk I can't believe you never saw the movie. it made the hell out of my childhood in the mid 90's. Both the movie and the cartoon based off it. in fact, the 90's cartoon introduced me to Casper.
Good reviews! It is a shame North America didn't get the other Casper game. It looks like a solid adventure title! Though, I understand that the N64 was out when it was finally released, so they probably were setting their sights on that while the SNES' spotlight was dimming by then. It is weird that half the game is in English and the other is in Japanese. Though, I do hope that there eventually is a full English patch!
The US version feels kinda like the Reverse Polta-Guy..(or as you mentioned, Boy & his blob) but is she supposed to be Christina Ricci, lol? Japanese version looks more fun, i also dig the isometric view...beyond the difference in the years the games were released the different releases could also be due to who held the licensing rights stateside. Sorta like Ghostbusters during the NES era.
The plunger thing is from the movie. Kat’s dad uses it on slim one of caspers uncles. It looks like the mini bosses are just battles against fatso stinky and slim (caspers 3 uncles)

The ghost sprites have a cool gradient and do a real nice job of changing with whatever is in the background.
The SNES was particularly good at gradients and transparency, unlike the Mega Drive which had to do trickery.
The thing with the plunger is exactly how it works in the movie and it's a fun scene. That's a neat little tie-in.
