Today we're building our NFL announcer tier rankings. We're analyzing some of the biggest duos in the booth like Greg Olsen and Kevin Burkhardt, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman, Greg Gumble, Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, Joe Davis and Daryl Johnston, Cris Collinsworth and Mike Tirico, and Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit.
The NFL has evolved a lot since it was first broadcasted to the public, but one thing will always remain true, announcers are vital to the enjoyment of the game!

I think Jim Nantz is enough of a professional that he can kind of guide and get the best performance out of even a rookie color commentator. (Like he would be a great interviewer for example, because I feel he would be able to always get the other person to feel comfortable talking.) I love Tony Romo's "call it in the air" prediction abilities and I think Jim Nantz was always good enough to have trust and give space and tease those awesome calls out of Tony Romo even when Romo was brand new. But I think Romo hit a "sophomore slump" as he became a little bit too comfortable in the booth, and now we need to wait for him to take the next step of being both comfortable and more experienced.

I can't tell with Joe Davis. I'm a slightly biased Dodger fan that's used to hearing his voice all the time, but I like him. Not amazing, but not bad.

Harlan with the Malcolm Butler interception is the best call ever. Course i am a Pats fan.
As a giants fan, our best SB moment (tyree catch) was a horribly commentated moment by joe buck & aikman
@@andrewaustin6459 ehhh the Norwood miss was a far bigger deal than that Tyree catch, because the Giants won that game on that miss unlike the Tyree catch. I don't why true Giants fans always leave that call out when it was win, or lose on that FG. It wasn't even 4th down on the Tyree catch, so even if Eli had been sacked on the play the Giants would still have had the ball.
Of the play by play guys who no longer call games, I always liked Sam Rosen as well as Dick Stockton when they called games for Fox

Eagle is underrated for sure!
I am a Buffalo Bills fan and a San Francisco 49ers fan, and we loved Van Miller, he was so great. But, dear God, the guy that followed him, John Murphy, was the worst. He knew absolutely nothing about football, let alone the entire sports of WNY and I dreaded the Bills being blacked out because that loser was going to call a game. Thank God we don't have that worry anymore.

best - harlan, joe buck, davis, and (nantz and Michaels 15-20 years ago). worst - levy, spero dedes, tirico - big piles of dog excrement. al michael's is actually a hologram - they have people behind the scenes who cobble together past audio.
Perfect list. I 110% agree with you on Joe Davis. Every time he calls something, I have to just cringe for a minute. His voice sounds like a banshee when he calls something. Definitely my least favorite announcer in the NFL.
Thom brennaman is the absolute worst of the worst. Boring as hell, lack of care for the game. Just a guy who didn't belong in a booth

Al Michaels nowadays seems super bored whenever he’s calling games. I don’t if that’s just me or not. Then again he’s been calling games for who knows how long.

How you put Romo top tier? Literally one of the worse. Talks too much preplay... I don't ever want to hear him tell me what to expect the offense or defense is gunna do. That alone puts him near the bottom as far as "tiers" are concerned
Tony Romo is terrible because he won't just shut up and let us enjoy the game. I don't want him trying to tell you what plays the offense and defense are doing...especially if he's going to be wrong. He should talk like 50% less most of the time. He's still better than Greg Olsen though

Charles Davis isn’t on here but I just want to say he is garbage I get so mad when he’s calling my teams game
Joe Buck's being annoying is only part of his problem. There's the greater problem of his continuing failure to understand the game at a more-than-superficial level. The audience is reminded every week that Buck has never played football--on any level. Buck's knowledge of the game seems to be held back by two things: (1) he doesn't have a love for the game--his first love is hearing his own voice--and (2) he lacks the brain power it takes: someone who struggles to known whether 5/8 is greater than 1/2 is intellectually incapable of understanding football on the level of someone who's actually played the game. And most of Buck's male audience will have played football at some point in their lives.

Greg Olsen is a shade worse than Buck and probably the worst part of football season. He's obnoxious with no flow.
