- This Amish Canning series is the result of an interview that I had with an Amish woman and her family. In this video you get to meet Susie and see her water bath/ Open kettle pantry! Keep in mind that some items and canning technique's in this pantry would be considered NON- USDA approved. So please do your own research!
It has been an absolutely pleasure and gift to know Susie and all her amazing knowledge!
Please know that all of these Amish recipes and techniques (concerning canning things that would normally be pressure canned) are considered REBEL canning recipes and are NOT USDA approved!!! Therefore using the recipe at your own risk. Please do your own research and decide what is safe for you.
Also, if you have never canned before I would suggest learning USDA methods first to build confidence and experience before venturing off on these methods!!! #waterbathcanning #canninglids #Amish #canninglife

I’m a fan for life….there are so many ways to do things. People want to criticize but what did they use before pressure canning????? Girl keep “Making It Make”…
Totally respect her privacy and super grateful for this video THANK YOU TO ALL INVOLVED!
I got a really good deal on some carrots, and I am wondering can I water bath them raw with just water. I used pints and is 60 minutes long enough??
If Suzy did a cooking/preserving class I would definitely sign up for that! I would LOVE ❤️ to learn more about how the cook, their recipes, how they "can".
And to hear her talk is AWESOME, I love her accent 😍. As the comments have said please 🙏 tell her thank you for all of us. And any other recipes she wants to share is always greatly appreciated 😇🥰
Oh yes. Her knowledge is a blessing and gift. Thank you for sharing this gift.
I wish I had a Susie in my life. It honestly makes me feel like I need to step my game up so I can be that for someone else one day. You have such a beautiful community. A sense of love and connection that you just don't see anymore.
There was an accident near my home and an Amish family was involved. The town and surrounding towns helped with donations to help with the bills. It was truely a beautiful come together!!!!
out in the country that's how it is =) We had a guy hit in his buggy last year and luckily he only needed a new buggy.
I hope your neighbouring family are soon able to move forward from the accident. It sounds like a great community vibe where you are xx
Wow! Same thing happened here in Dover last year.
What a sweet women, I could listen to her all day. I’m so thankful she has been so kind to share her teaching with you so we can learn as well. God sure has blessed you by leading you to her. ❤❤❤❤ I’m new to your Chanel about a month now and I sure have been missing out, but looking so forward to more and more of your content. I use to can with my Mother all the time and did a little after I got married, but wanted to get back to it now that I’m retired. Time to teach my grandchildren.❤
I LOVE your channel and never listen to the bad comments, they can just move along if they don't agree!
I recently canned two quarts of Susie's potatoes to test if my family enjoys them. They turned out so lovely! Thank her for allowing us into her pantry and for sharing her knowledge about canning.
Me too, my potatoes were soooo GOOD
Have you tried to mash them? I’d be bloody thrilled if I could mash my canned potatoes (no luck so far)
I am canning 10 pounds this weekend..... So excited to try!!!!
I love it!!! Canning in half gallons!!! This woman’s dream. Thank you!!! Thank you Susi for sharing your beautiful farm and pantry!
Isn’t this just amazing?! I love that she’s showing us this ❤
I wish I could “like” this video a billion times!! This was like touring my moms canning pantry back in the day!! I’ve been canning some this fall and your channel has given me much inspiration and insight. We must preserve the old ways and bring them to the next generation.
I feel so privileged that she let us in her pantry. I just am loving learning a new method. Please tell Susie thank you and keep reaching all of us her recipes
The flower you didn't know what it was is gomphrena. Beautiful bouquet!
Aka globe amaranth.
All USDA zealots, grab a brown paper bag before starting the video. If it gets overwhelming, just breathe into the bag. Serenity now, serenity now....
HAHA I see what you did there... great Seinfeld reference
😂
LOL!!!
WooHoo!!!
That was so fun! My husband’s favorite soup is tomato, and I have been thinking of trying to make my own. So if Susie blesses you with her recipe please share with us!🙏 Thank you both❤️
Wouldn’t that be a wonderful blessing to have? I am so grateful to have Susie to teach us through this channel
Yes! My husband's favorite is tomato soup with crackers. I would love Susie's recipe! 💗
Ketchup,mustard,pickles,Too
I can tomato soup it’s one of my favorite things to keep on the shelf … but I’d love to hear that recipe
Oh yes. Me too. That was what I was gonna ask!
That was a great look into the Amish pantry. A lot of what Susie does is also done here in Germany: the fruit juice with the steam juicer without any sugar, and then only hot sealing. the pear juice that year was so sweet that it had to be diluted with water to drink it. I also always use new rubber rings for my weck-jars for meat dishes and I cook beans and carrots in a water bath for 2 hours (without vinegar). This year I made pear butter using an Amish recipe.
I think it's great what you're doing. Keep it up and don't give up.
Loved the tour of Susie’s pantry. ❤️ My parents left the Amish church when I was 3 but we had great connection with extended family. Since PA Dutch was my first language I smiled when I heard her conversing with her son. ☺️ And what she called ‘jam’ we call grape mush, except we make ours with the juice and not whole fruit. And to put that on angel food cake is amazing!
Oh my! I've been waiting with baited breath for this! What a joy and blessing for sweet Susie to allow us all in to her beautiful pantry and give us all some great canning advice and tips! Loved everything about this! Thank you both so much!
Need to know her juice process and her recipe for tomato soup. Love ya'lls "children first" attitude. That is a moment in time that could be lost if it is considered an interference. They always come first. Thank you Suzie
I would love to know her tomato soup recipe 😋 it sounded so yummy
This is wonderful. Meeting Susie was the best thing you've done. Not everyone can be instructed by a lady who has followed decades of methods and recipes and is showing you how it's done. People who know what they are doing love to pass on their knowledge. BTW, I love how your white teeth match the white of your eyes and your black hair shines in the sunlight. No, I'm not weird, I'm an old lady of 73, remembering when I was that girl. Sniff, sorry. Don't be browbeaten by the canning police, people have been preserving food in this way for generations.
She had such a precious voice. I've returned repeatedly not just for the wonderful content but for her wisdom and her accent. Just loved this. Would love more but I respect her desire for privacy. This is an important historical video.
Susie's accent is so cute! She almost sounds like an Irish lady :) How wonderful of her to share her pantry with us! I'm so excited about this video ❤
I absolutely love your channel. Please give Suzy a great thank you from an old gal in Ohio! She's educated some of us through you on how to safely water-bath. I will never pressure can another potato. Thank you, lots of love from Ohio and God bless you. 🙏❤️🙏
Where in Ohio are you? I'm from southeastern..Ohio Valley.
I am 66 and have waterbirth caned all my live. I got a All-American presser canner 4 yr. ago. I have not used it. FEAR. Your Amish canning videos have opened canning doors for me to can the foods I never thought I could. Thank you and your lovely friend. You have empowered me to do so much more! THANK YOU BOTH! God bless.
I bought an all American canner this year and absolutely love it. It is reassuring to have the dial to watch and the lid can't possible blow off. It just looks menacing but is my very favorite canner of all. Water bath canning is great and Suzie's methods are tried and true. I just don't always have the extra time to do it that way. Blessings to you.
Pressure canning is not difficult or dangerous. I just follow the directions that came with my canner.
Can someone plz explain waterbathing??. Is it JUST BOILING WATER????? I'm getting frustrated sorry. 😠
@@mrssperry6562 Water bath canning is having your canned goods covered with an inch or two of boiling water. You start timing when the water is full boiling. When the time is up you take them out. Don't get frustrated. If you have more questions I can help. I do both, water bath the high acid foods (tomatoes) and pressure can meats and potatoes and veggies.
I was so afraid when I first used my pressure canner. I had one hand on my kitchen door handle to bolt out the door. Not lying! Now I laugh at that. If you have an All American canner it really is fail proof. Just search what your altitude is. If it is above 1000 then your weight needs to be at 15. If it 1000 or less then the weight is at 10. Double check though. Just ask mr google pants "what is the altitude of......(what ever state) Then you want to watch the gauge dial. When it gets up to pressure the WEIGHT will start to jiggle. Then you turn down your heat until it jiggles about 4 times per minute. You can even ask Mr. Google pants what the pressure gauge needs to read for your area too! Always remember if you cold pack your jars then the water in the canner needs to be cold. If hot packing then you need to have hot jars. I put mine in the oven at 225 for 10 or so minutes but make sure jars are hot when you add hot product. It WILL NOT BLOW UP!!! You will notice a rubber nipple on the canner. If that pops up you ARE in trouble. Turn off the heat. But...it won't happen if you get the jiggle of the weight to jiggle about 4 times per minute. Remember....the weighted gauge prevents the pressure from building to dangerous levels. So once it jiggles monitor your GAUGE usually around 11lbs of pressure. Guildebrook Farm (earlier video's) were excellent. She explains it and so does Homestead Heart. Homestead Heart doesn't use an All American canner though. But the concept is the same but All American canners have the extra security of watching the pressure dial.
what a wonderful friend you are so honest and genuine and this is because you realize your work is from God and the light of Christ shines out from your eyes!! Thank you very much for God's Channel.
Let Susi know we loved hearing the child. It makes things so much more authentic and family oriented. Love this video
What an honor! Convey my appreciation to Susie, please. She was blessed to be a blessing- to you and to us. Your first Amish water bath canning video guided me off my path of fear and procrastination and onto the road of canning victory. 50+ batches and counting now. Be well and blessed, ladies.
THANK YOU!!
I could listen to Ms Suzie talk all day long!!!!
What a privilege to have a special relationship like this!!
God bless you both!!♥️🙏🏻
I love water bath canning, and I ignore all the nay says. My friend is 93 and she helped her mom can growing up. They never pressure canned anything. She encourages me daily. Thank Miss Susie for sharing her pantry with us.
It's not really a thing outside of the US anyway. We don't have pressure canners and have to import them from the US if we want them.
Rita where do you get your info about water bath times. I have not been successful.
I love the way you cherish friendships.
I feel like this is such a beautiful friendship, im so grateful that she was willing to participate and impart some of her wisdom to us
I love how Susie uses Stevia, I would love to know how she likes stevia being canned, vs. added afterwards. I am on a sugar free way of eating, and ALWAYS interested in how to can JAMS etc. with
NO SUGAR! Tell Susie thank you for showing us her lovely pantry! 🌷
@comfort creek ranch I have made nectarine jam with swerve sugar replacement and pomona pectin. Pomona pectin let's you use less sugar and the box goes a long way. 🙂
My husband and I have been sugar free going on 5 years. I am ecstatic when I find recipes that have already been altered for natural sweeteners!
You might be interested in the book “Naturally Sweet Food in Jars” by Marisa McClellan. She doesn’t use white sugar in any of her recipes. It’s my new favorite canning book!
I wish so much I could get past the taste of stevia. It tastes nasty like aspartame to my mind.
I used unsweetened apple juice for applesauce.
That was a wonderful video. I grew up calling those thickened fruits compote. Thank you Susie for sharing your pantry. !
I LOVED THIS SO MUCH!!! ❤❤❤❤ PLEASE thank her for ALL of us!! I did have to laugh when she was talking about reusing lids, I reused them for years until I was told I shouldn’t and guess what I still reuse them!! Love her brogue, the way she said “chruncheeeehh” ❤
Thank you for sharing this wealth of knowledge from Suzi. She is absolutely adorable and I wish I could spend some time with her. On a trip to NY, we went to Pennsylvania and took a tour of the Amish community. They are the kindest people and work so hard to live a life that is pleasing to God. Many years ago I purchased a corner shelf for $25 at a yard sale. It turned out to be Amish craftsmanship and still looks the same today as it did 30 years ago. It is one of my most priced possessions. People today don't understand the joy in a job well done and the sense of pride in making things yourself. I taught my daughters it's better not to do a job at all than to do it halfway. Our young people have lost these lessons. It's good to see more are returning to the tried and true methods. ❤❤❤
We very much appreciate you and Suzie. It was so kind of her to allow us into her home. Thank you both!
Hearing her say puréed gave me the biggest grin. What a wonderful soul.
What a beautiful friendship. I’m sure you both are such a blessing to one another
I live in an apartment, and I had been so hesitant about canning because I did not want a pressure canner. Your channel has changed my perspective, and I am eternally grateful. I appreciate you and your journey. I am so glad you have Susie and that she has been willing to share with you while still being respectful of her beliefs. I hope you keep this channel active for a long time. I hope that you can ignore the naysayers and focus on the positivity of those who want to learn from you. The road for those who are chosen is narrow!
Why are you scared of pressure canning in an apartment? They're not noisy--they just jiggle and sashay. Get a 16qt Presto or a Carey/Nesco 9.5qt electric. Nothing to be scared of.
Suzie is a wealth of knowledge from the "olden days". More of Suzie if she will share please. Tell her how much we appreciate her.
TheJOY from you both in this conversation is heartwarming.
This is such a testimony of steel sharpening steel and edifying, uplifting friendships. Thank you.
To God be the glory.
What a sweet lady!! How kind of Susie to let you visit with a camera in tow. My sincere thanks.
So grateful and thankful that u gave your channel to our creator! God bless you and all whom u love.
I do open kettle for everything fruit(including tomatoes) that goes in hot. Last week I took my old glass juice jars from buying juice and made apple juice. They sealed great using open kettle method.
I need to learn how to "Open Kettle" canning. It sounds like an amazing way.
What is your opinion on shelf life for open kettle method items?
You have such a beautiful spirit! Thank you for bringing different methods to us. Don't listen to the negative. They forget that years ago the human race had to preserve food without "modern" gadets..gadgets... what did they do? They figured out how to MakeItMake! Never stop being you!
Another nice video make it make just like always you explain it the way we need to hear it it's nice that you're with your friend Susie and being able to listen to her she seems like she's got a ton of knowledge and you're just enjoying every bit of it and and you deserve to have a good friend like that she seems like a very kind lady have a good time with your friend see you on the next video
I really love Susie. Please thank her for allowing us in her pantry
I am living in Lagrange County, Indiana, because my 93-year-old mother is blind and can no longer live alone safely. My home is in southern, Michigan. We have many Amish in both areas. I became friends with one of them when I frequented their produce stand. I have canned with her and found out that she also uses a pressure canner. I have learned a lot from her and I have also taught her a few tricks as well. I enjoy our friendship.
Oh please tell sweet Susie she is such a blessing to share with us!! And I just love hearing her children in the background!! Children are never a interruption and hearing them in the background really blesses my heart!!❤❤❤
My hubby & I canned potatoes today. Done them with the vinegar & they are beautiful like Suzy's.. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the two of you for sharing your knowledge 😊 ☺ ❤
I did,& I ate them,Fried or mashed
Potato idea....these r sooo good cooked this way. Rinse off potatoes. Set air fryer paper in tray. Spray well with oil. Place potatoes on it. Spray again and season with salt/pepper. 400 for about 15 min. Yum.
Thank you, beautiful Susie!! 💜
I absolutely loved this!! I am on a journey to live a healthier, happier, and holier life. This gave me so much inspiration.
Yes please on the cookbook
That was a gorgeous bouquet of flowers! Thank you Suzie for allowing the tour and the explanations. I enjoyed it! Good job on the video !
Susie is an absolute delight! What a blessing this friendship is!
Please thank Susie so much for allowing us into her pantry and for sharing her methods.
Suzi is beautiful! I love her and am thankful for her taking the time to give viewers an insight into a different way of canning.
I love all the little baby noises! Please don't ever feel bad about that! My kids are Grown and I missed those sounds.
Yes you need to pick beans while they are young and tender for the best flavor.
Beautiful bouquet 💐 How sweet of you.
It warms my heart to see that there are still nice people in the world
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you to dear soul Susie for sharing with all of us. I love the fact that Susie uses every little bit of the fruits.
And as far as bottles being reused….she and her family are still here to pass along the knowledge and safety of doing so. I reused bottle for many years. And I will continue to do so. Common sense goes a long way. Check the lids. If they are a bit rusty, toss and use newer ones.
Thank you Leilani ❤️ great video!!
Growing green beans in the desert, in the heat, makes the beans bitter.
Thank you, Susie!
Thanks to you all, I've canned my first homemade spaghetti sauce and homemade chicken soup by learning so much from your channel....at first I was only canning my jams...
.....just ate some of my soup after 2 months just to try it, and it was great....Thanks for all you do....💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚 Excited to do more....
Thank you Suzie so very much GodBless you both.
I love this woman I am speechless I am almost crying just her voice her voice sounds so genuine and so caring and kind and she has helped you where you are I'm in Canada there's no one to help me with know where I can go does no-one to learn from. You are very blessed.
Thank you for bringing the knowledge that the Amish have been using for centuries. Susie is such a lovely woman! What a beautiful pantry, filled with hard work and love!
This is such a blessing!! Praise the Most High! That white grape juice idea! I would have never thought of that! ❤ Bless you and Susie!

What an awesome friendship you have with Susie!! You both have light that shines forth, and is it much-needed in these times. God bless you both richly and abundantly for sharing all this with us!
What a special and wonderful relationship y’all have thank you ladies for sharing! Have a blessed day!
Please continue to convey our appreciation. My daughter and I have already done potatoes and green beans using her water bath directions. Next up is carrots. ❤
I use all different kinds of jars to can too been doing it since I was a young boy, I am 62 now and still do it, I reuse jars too I save them from year to year, as most people do around my area! My mom used to carry a canning ring or lid always in her purse and when she went grocery shopping she got so she could tell by feel if a canning lid and ring would fit on what ever she bought, she would pick the glass jars that she could can in! I am a old fashioned canner and a rebel type canner, I do pasta and soup with noodles all the time, and I use regular corn starch as mom did for pie fillings and other things, gravies and such! I bought the clear type once and didn’t like it, so went back to mommas way stuck with it all these years! I ain’t dead yet! We never used a pressure cooker growing up it was all done boiling water bath or open kettle, I do use pressure canning now for everything, I just do it! Probably not the recommended way but there not eating my food I am, my way! Blessings on you and Susie✝️🙏🏡❤️🦌👴💒✅
Yes thank you both. I appreciate her allowing us to see all her goodies.
Tha k you so much. I’m 70 and have always canned tomatoes. I wish I would’ve come across this information years ago. But, I’m grateful to have it now. Never too late! 😍
Wow!!! Loved the video she a great blessing to you and all of us too.❤
Thank you and thank Susie for me, for your efforts and for obeying God in this. You have taught me so much and I am forever grateful to you and to God that this is available at this time. What an amazing time to be alive and to prepare.
Everyone who loves to can needs this channel and this two sweet lady's sharing their canning experiences and recipes. I have found my most favorite UA-cam channel now! Thank you and Suzie so much
This comment is way late, but I wanted to add that in addition to all of the information, I really loved Susie’s little guy chiming in. It made it feel like a regular conversation with my lady friends 😊
"Take it easy on the corn." That is funny.
Thank you to you and Susie for sharing all this amazing knowledge. I would love to have a book with all of her recipes.
I want to add: I love your pantry tours. Its so much fun to see their canned goods and hear about their lives.
Susie is wonderful and reminds me of my grandmother. You are very blessed to know her.
Greetings from Nova Scotia Canada! I'm originally from Northern MD close to the state line and worked in Lancaster county for years. I recently visited home and my old co workers. Once I returned to Canada I realized how much I miss Amish food and decided to pickle my own beet pickled eggs. Then I decided I should try actual preserves and found your channel. Watching your videos are such a piece of home. Thanks for teaching us all these skills! From a fellow Lancaster area native
The flower is called globe amaranthus and they actually dry nicely. They will also hold their color as long as they are protected from light.
What a wonderful tour! Made me tear up hearing Susie’s voice. My late in-laws were Swiss/German and had a similar accent 💕💕💕
Thanks to both you and Susie for this beautiful tour and the wonderful education that went with it. Blessings to you both.
Wow this was a phenomenal pantry tour! Suzy is so awesome for letting you do all this filming, her knowledge is incredible & your friendship is a thing of beauty to me. 🤗🙏❤️👏
Tell Suzy Thank You for me. This is a huge blessing to all canners And thank you for all your videos
This was so fun to watch. Thank Suzie for us.

What a gorgeous bouquet you made!!! Susie's pantry is beautiful! Thank you for sharing.
What a wonderful pantry Susie has , a lot of knowledge and hard work. Thank you for sharing.
Love the way Susie is so creative to use every bit of the products!
Thank you to Susie for her wisdom & her gracious spirit in allowing us in her home for a pantry tour. It was so very interesting! I’m anxious for more tips & tricks in your canning journey. Thank you Leilani for bringing us this! God bless!😊
This title needed to have been Susie's Pantry. lol I would have dropped everything and worked in every stolen moment to watch this sooner! Absolutely amazing. Thank you both so much for this incredible video. ❤
THANK YOU!! Please tell Suzie she is AMAZING and a HUGE BLESSING GOR IS ALL. So glad I found your channel and that you continue to be brave and stand up for yourself🙏🏼❤️. I have learned so much from these videos! You both have no idea the impact you are making! Butterfly effect spreading light faster than I can say GOD BLESS YOU! ❤
Thank you so much to both you and Susie for showing waterbath and open kettle canning. In Europe waterbathing meat, fish and vegetables is tried and trusted with open kettle for fruits the norm but the claws of the USDA is stifling any information on this online. Recipes, trusted for generations are nearly impossible to get. I’m really looking forward to Susies recipes.
I am canning fruits, veggies, soups, and so much more only with using the water bath canning system since 30 years. And I also reuse my weck jars on and on and on. Maybe 2 jars are went bad in the whole time. Everything else is good until we eat it.
when reusing lids, I check:
how deep the impression in the seal is. (it'll get deeper as it hardens with use)
wither the metal has any damage
wither the inside finish has any damage.
Try boiling the lids with a bit of baking soda. Often times they will plump up again.
