    A personal PS3 anecdote: I used to work at Circuit City when the PS3 came out. There was a display with PS3s at the front of our store. A man came in, grabbed one and ran out the door. We didn't do anything we just stood there and watched him book it across the parking lot. When he reached the street, he suddenly stopped, dropped the box and went embarrassingly on his way. The box was for display purposes and didn't actually have a PS3 in it. We all had a good laugh afterwards.

    One notable event was when Disney decided to broadcast E3 2018 live on their channel “Disney XD”. (This was when the channel was trying to appeal to young teenage “gamers”) They got about halfway through the presentation with no issues until Gears of War Tactics was revealed, and they cut the broadcast out right after the trailer showed an enemy’s head exploding from a sniper shot. After that the presentation kept cutting back in for a few seconds before back out for several minutes because Disney was too scared to show anything else on the show for more than a few seconds. It was a total disaster and the nail in the coffin for their whole “gamer appeal” phase

    CRITICAL CONTEXT: Wii Music was first shown during E3 2006. It was not shown AT ALL during E3 2007. There were MULTIPLE interviews with Nintendo employees that year from the MAINSTREAM HARDCORE gaming press asking where Wii Music was and if it was cancelled. Nintendo severely misinterpreted that to think there was intense interest in Wii Music, leading them to make it their headline game at E3 that year.
    It was still a massive mistake, but this is an important piece of the story i NEVER see included.

    I think something largely forgotten is that E3 was an expo made primarily for retailers. Its only later it started morphing into a massive marketing event for consumers. So thats why so much is spent talking about sales and stuff in those earlier ones.

      And the reason it morphed was because fans were *starved* for news and to see how the sausage was made, so early on they just kept showing up in droves through press passes. Later on conventions like PAX took over this space with a more deliberately fan-centric offering, so E3 was already starting to be obsoleted

    29:57 Tak Fujii is my hero. He was diagnosed with cancer which resulted in him losing his iconic dredlocks. After he got his diagnosis he tweeted; "Will take wun million pills by the end of this nightmare."
    It takes a lot of guts to go onstage and speak a foreign language. It takes even more guts to join in on the jokes people make about your pronunciation. It's fear of moments like this that make Miyamoto and Kojima rely on translators despite being rich enough to afford good English teachers.
    He is clearly fluent in English, something most Japanese people cannot claim. We tend to think English is easy because of how widely it is spoken but English requires a whole different set of facial muscles to speak than Japanese.
    Most people making fun of him cannot speak a second language anyway, I'd like to see them say 100万の軍勢! on stage at Toyko game show.
    It was the lack of crowd response that threw him off. Clearly the journos were tired and not expecting much. Getting the 360 to render over one million NPCs is impressive if true!

      @@Mario_N64 Sadly, not enough people gave a shit about Blu-ray at all during it's lifetime. Sony were anticipating another smash hit format similar to what DVD achieved when it replaced VHS, but due to the rise of streaming services complimented by smartphones gaining more and more video playback features around the mid to late 2000s it just didn't happen. The PS3 makes an excellent 1080p Blu-ray player though, especially when paired with the official remote control (also ahead of it's time as it uses Bluetooth, as do the remotes for a lot of Smart TVs now, especially the Google TV ones).
      In comparison the PS4 and PS5 are a joke - not even the PS4 Pro can play 4K Blu-rays yet the Xbox One X can, hilarious considering Sony developed the format, and the PS5 can do it but the supplied media remote control is garbage and all of the features like that feel more like an afterthought. The PS3 was also the last PlayStation to support CD playback - PS4 and PS5 don't have the laser for it.

    • @garydiamondguitarist
      @garydiamondguitarist 9 місяців тому

      @@kingoftherevolution4855 Yeah, despite some problems the PS3 is one of the most ambitious consoles ever, if not *THE* most ambitious as Ken Kutaragi wanted an all-in-one that could do photo viewing and printing, video playback, video calls, CD/DVD/Blu-ray support, full backwards compatibility with the previous home consoles etc. Launch PS3s do PS1/PS2 games with basically 99% compatibility, and a lot of people don't know this but there's an unfinished PSP emulator built into it as well, which can be used although a lot of games don't work properly. Compared to this, the PS4 and PS5 are far less ambitious. I'd actually vote the PS4 as the weakest PlayStation ever - yeah a lot of the games were amazing and still are, but it's noisy, boring to look at (all models), had a stripped down OS as compared to the PS3 which loses a lot of the cool media centre stuff. Now the PS5 can do all the things a PS4 Pro did and more (including fixing the frame-rates on certain games, or better still doubling 30FPS games to 60FPS in a few cases), plus more quietly and quickly due to the SSD, PS4s are basically completely pointless.

    I think the only the only way an E3 type event would work now is if it gave smaller, lesser known gaming companies and developers the chance to show the world their work and advertise upcoming games.
    Since the big three (Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony) now have their own Directs, the stage is set to give the spotlight to the little guy.
    The event would have to be scaled down, of course. And it couldn't be called "E3". But there is now an opportunity to fill the hole E3 left.

You had insane excitement over the announcement of the 3DS (the DS was showing its age at that time and was one of the most popular consoles ever released) and then you had the motion plus announcement that was received.... poorly. Not only was Microsoft’s Kinect-focused E3 presentation painful to watch but they faked the “gameplay demos” because they had oversold the motion tracking capabilities and couldn’t get the hardware to work as advertised. So all of the demos were pre-recorded and they got actors to pretend to play along with the videos.

    As a puppetry nerd I still love those Star Fox puppets they used for the SF Zero presentation. Also surprised how much people don’t like the game nowadays, whereas I remember some people (like me) liking it and some not when it came out. Now I hear almost nothing but negative things about it.

    • @Xfushion2
      @Xfushion2 Рік тому +7

      You're on the minority there, Star fox zero always had bad rep.
      On the reveal people were disappointed because it was another SF64 remake and the folk who played it couldn't stand it's control scheme, that was basically the main complaint of the game which led to mediocre ratings from critics.
      It did so bad both critically and commercially Nintendo didn't even ported it to switch unlike the rest of their WiiU exclusives.

    • @mariokarter13
      @mariokarter13 11 місяців тому +2

      The cope at the time was that Star Fox Zero's terrible controls were actually great if you develop Stockholm Syndrome by playing the game from start to finish about 5 times. If the content of the game were compelling enough people would've gotten past the controls (see Kid Icarus Uprising), but it's just Star Fox 64 again.

    • @DeaconPain
      @DeaconPain 3 місяці тому

      Because there's nothing to like. Imagine playing Starfox 64 but every 15 seconds the controls invert and Reggie spits in your mouth. Because it's literally SF64 again but with much worse controls.

    The thing about E3 is that it was never about gaming, it really just was a business conference where you could sometimes see some cool stuff. So when you turn it into a gaming spectacle, you face a few problems, some of which should have been very obvious from the old business perspective:
    1) Back in the days of physical shops with no massive indie market on Steam, absolutely nobody bought videogames during summer on the grand scale. While some good games were certainly released, it was usually then you'd drop the ones you didn't have faith in. E3 usually took place in June, as a reminder.
    2) Japanese companies end their fiscal year on March 31st as a general rule and that's why Sony, Nintendo and some major JP publishers gave exactly zero fucks about E3. You're basically asking them to blow their load in June, a few months into their business year. Western developers honestly weren't in a much better position either because while they were further into the year, most of their stuff dropped in September-November or sometime in spring.
    Basically, as far as actual gaming goes you couldn't have placed a conference at a worse time. If you look up the history of E3, you'll find that Sony and Nintendo skipped it all the time because they have a home market of 125 million to cater to and there wasn't all that much going on here either. Actual console reveals were just about the only thing it really worked for because it gave plenty of time for retailers to take orders and manufacturers the ability to see initial demand - at least when SEGA wasn't doing the reveals.
