Hello. I am 62 and was forced to change my left handedness to right handedness and suffered ALL the symptoms you mentioned including the dire social consequences. I am just now beginning to practice writing with my left hand. My dad forced me in kindergarten under consequence of being hit by him to change my handedness.

Hello. I am 49 and exactly in same your situation. Unfortunately, almost all the sources are talking about the consequences. But I couldn't find what I can do to fix my issues such as difficulties in concentration, learning, focusing, being hyperactive and such. I knew that I have this issue, but I didn't know exactly all are related to this force of being right handed. Please if you know the treatment let me know. I highly appreciate it. However, so far yoga and meditation and acceptance is helping me very much. But I'm tired of crazy multitasking and do a lot of things at the same time... I had some benefit out of creativity. Yet, I prefer stillness rather than creation and art and so on. According to my experiences I guess neurofeedback therapy with a real professional doctor can help, but it is so expensive and needs at least 20 session of it.

I'm 64. I was switched from left to right as a young child. Thank God I have had a good life. Now I understand some of the challenges I have had I over the years. I've 2 functions fully right and all the rest left only. Those two scissoring and stick handling were learned preschool and I had no choice if I wanted to play. I cannot do those two maneuvers left to this day.

Most left handers are kind of ambidextrous cause many thigns are designed for right handes people like guitars. In my experience i am naturally left handed. I remember trying to shake someones hand with my left hand and writing my checkmarks backwards. Of course i have adapted and become ambidextrous. One day i decided to use my left hand for more th8ngs and moticed a difference. My focus got better, my adhd went away . I could read words wihtout naturally skipping over things. Also i could work on something without my attention veering of. I wasnt as hyper and impulsive as i used to be. Lefties already use their right hand for a few things fue to the emvirnment so dont make it worse for them by forcing them to change other things. Handedness is real

@@thepsychologistng thank you. I was told that in childhood but it never dawned upon me until recently..maybe because I got in trouble a lot, so having a natural ability can work against you also. I was very creative where I excelled in creative arts, but also liked to write. Now I'm older I've gained a lot more balance simply just by studying more about Left and Right functions both through function of action and also the brain. Most of the time everything just down to practice and determination. Even if an ability is natural it still requires practice.

I have many of these problems and I was late diagnosed with ADHD at 28. They diagnosed women late. 🙄 I also have/had language learning problems and learned to finally read late(at 9). The list of my learning issues and other issues is super long. I am in college and struggle even though I'm excited ro learn and live learning school is always difficult. I know I was switched to a right as a child because thry thought it would help me with my learning issues. I was 3 months premature and had hypoxia during birth. Anyways, would it benefit my brain, confidence in school? And life overall, to switch my writing back to left handed? I cannot seem to find a definite answer. Please help. I'm left dominant and I need ro know if maybe switching back will help possibly slow and retain my brain a bit. This ADHD is not okay and it's making my life suck. Any advise would be amazing❤

This is really enlightening. I am a typical case study. I learnt I was born right-handed but I broke my right arm when I was a year old and within the months I took to heal, I switched to using my left hand. When my right hand healed, my parents did everything to switch me back to my right hand but had to stop at a time. I grew up being very awkward with both hands... I didnt have a good writing like most left handed people, never liked maths and all. I understand it better now. But, is there a possibility that even at that very young age, my brain didn't do a total switch?

Yes I think it does, switching causes some parts of the brain to be overloaded. I think it might have affected the parts of your brain that has to do with language processing. Noe that you are using your left again, you might be reducing pressure from the overloaded areas, thereby increasing their efficiency. I found out last year, 2022, that i'm actually left handed, after wondering and wondering if i was actually left handed.
How i found out was like this: My mom's friend was putting a little roof above the door, he was on the ladder and trying to drill with his left hand since his right hand couldn't reach due to him being on the right side and the little roof on the left side, so i made a joke about how he can't use his left hand, then my mom out of nowhere mentioned i'm left handed, that i've always used my left hand as a kid, and my dad was the one who switched me to be right handed, for reasons i'll never know.
But it makes sense due to how much i use my left hand for a lot of things, and i've been asked by multiple people if i'm left handed, i know my left eye and ear are dominant. I'm an artist, so when one day i decided to draw with my left hand for the funsies, it actually felt more natural and less frustrating, not to mention because my left eye is dominant, my drawings looked more straight instead of slanted when i use my right hand.
PS: I started using my left hand for writing and drawing, and my left hand's motor control is quickly improving with not much effort.

My mother who was totally left-handed tried to force me to become right-handed. When she would hand me something, I would naturally grasp it with my left hand. She would then place it in my right hand, and of course being a stubborn child, I would immediately switch to my left hand. As a consequence, I write with my left hand and do EVERYTHING else with my right hand. I am 73 and still have a problem telling which way is right or left, spatial relationships and am very insecure. Do I also have brain confusion due to this?

Hello Jay. Thank you for sharing your experience. I do not think that you have brain confusion. Your symptoms seem mild and occur even among people that were not switched. I personally have problems telling left from right particularly when driving. Since you write with your left you should be ok. Writing is one of the major tasks of concern because it involves several centres in the brain. Have an amazing day.

I just switched from writing left handed as i always have to writing right handed. Took me a week and is so much better. Still only draw left handed as there is no mechanical advantage as there is with writing right handed since writing is a linear operation. Very glad i switched and surprised by how easy it was. I only write in cursive and it just flows so much easier then with my left hand. The functionality of left/right hemisphere is not nearly as strict as you propose, by the way. Read modern neuroscience literature on the subject.

A number of individuals have reported switching back with success. However, note that they may be a risk of negative consequences due to individual differences. My advice to you is that, if you decide to switch back, watch the process, initially it might be cumbersome but it should begin to get better after a period let's say within a couple of months to a year. If not, you could stop and continue with the right. I wish you success with whatever decision you choose. Blessings
