I love that you permaculture includes plants that are just beautiful. Sometimes beauty is all the reason we need.

We have a local variety here in California, Calycanthus occidentalis, that looks very similar that I love. The blossoms smell like red wine.

It’s native here in East Tennessee, but I don’t have one. It’s now on the list of shrubs to add at my new house. Thanks!

Thank you for this. I found some sellers on Etsy who have this in stock. I'll be adding this to my landscape. It's beautiful!

I’m in the north east and have known about Carolina allspice a while and this spring purchased a bare root species plant from Fedco from Maine. To my surprised delight it bloomed small burgundy flowers all over its young sparse stems before even leafing out in May. I am smitten! I understand that this species has a wide variety of bloom sizes and aroma, or not. Looking forward to finding out if i lucked into an aromatic specimen or not. The fact that this plant is so ancient is fascinating. I may carve out a spot somewhere for a cultivar.

Always such a good feeling when the hard to find or grow plant really takes off.

We had a large thicket of Carolina allspice in Maryland. It was a dominating understory shrub. I didn't think to bring any with me when we moved west.

Excellent! I got seeds from Incredible seeds. I had several growing but killed four of them because I decided to try using fertilizer. (I never use fertilizer)
I have one now. Still only six inches high.

Great info-- thanks! Is this deciduous in the PNW? I think I remember it being so on the E Coast but was curious about you experience in a more temperate climate.
