    Thank you , you have taught me so much. Never taught about drones losing so much air . striking in. ..was a nightmare, it put me off playing the pipes , for years.l was actually hurting myself trying to blow..over the years l have spent hundreds of pounds , learning tunes too difficult for me , with out knowing the basics.. Thank you once again.

    Thanks for the video. You have taught me a lot and solved most of problems with my bagpipes. Thank You very much!!!

    I was never taught about how to get the best efficiency from the pipe. As a result, I fought with my pipes to get a sound out of them. This is the first time I've heard of this technique. Thanks very much for this video.

    This is all good advice, I had to learn all this by experimentation, now I have another bagpipe and I'm trying cane reeds for the first time, that's a whole new set of lessons to learn, hopefully without so much experimenting.

    They lasted just over two minutes, Bruce. Off at 1:49, on at 3:56.

    If my reeds leak air, are they shot and should be replaced with a fresh set? This is great information about how things should be; but no information is given on what to do to remedy the problem if it's there.

    I have the reeds closing and not losing air, but the chanter reed is stronger than the cut off pressure of the drones. Do I have to weaken the chanter reed... or how do I balance them without the drone reeds being less air efficient again?

    What is the average life expectancy of these reeds if played each day for an hour? When is a typical time to renew them to maintain optimum sound/reliability given the strain on the tongues? Thank you.

    Hi I have a new set and done the test, and mine only lasted about 25 seconds is that not normal? They seemed to play ok though.

    Hi Bruce, when I cut off my drones I can hear air coming out of my tenor drones. What can I do to stop this?

    What if there is sound of air in the drones, all of them? And my bag can only stand for about ten seconds until the drones start to make sound again...

      Then you’re losing air. Buy his reeds. You won’t regret it

    I went to blow my pipes up and managed to get my tenor drones to cut out with only air (not squeezing the bag) but I had to give a good squeeze to make my bass drone cut out for some reason. The bag did hold the air and eventually they started to sound one by one. Should I shorten the tongue on the bass drone reed with the bridle so it cuts off at the same time as the tenors?

      @sonerbihan 9 років тому

      Yes, your bas drone reed is to strong, the tongue is a bit to much opened, so , by moving the bridle towards the nose of the reed, viz the closed end, that will reduce the air consuming and will weaken the reed, of such a manner to settle the bass air efficiency ast the same strenght that that of the tenors
      And now, down to work
      Friendly

    Hi, Bruce! Is that possible with the cane drone reeds?

    • @sonerbihan
      @sonerbihan 9 років тому +1

      Yes, absolutly, the cane reeds work the same way and stop if you overblow them

    I lose a lot of air from the chanter, before I even start playing, is that normal? The stock is tightly in place and so is the chanter. The drones and the bag are tight.

      Hello, based on what you wrote this is normal. If you examine the chanter reed by itself there is a small opening between the tips of the two pieces of cane, and until the bag pressure is high enough to make the reed vibrate air will just go through that opening. The drone reeds and chanter reed all will let air pass when the bag pressure is low, but once the reeds start sounding a note the reeds are opening and closing so they are now helping keep the bag pressure up.
      When you have a chanter reed that sounds at 30 inches of water column vs one that sounds at 40 inches of water column, the one that requires 40 inches is harder to play because it needs more bag pressure before the reed helps you, and also needs more bag pressure to keep it sounding.

    I assume the "Easy Drone" reeds don't need this.

      Since this comment was posted a month ago, I'll respond, Ezee drone reeds are the ones I use, and as far as I know, all brands of drone reeds will need to be adjusted so as not to take more air than needed. Do this by adjusting the bridle that goes around the reeds tongue, slide it a small amount up or down until you get them where you like them and they shut off at the same time.
