Ahmad ibn Hanbal related to us, Abu `Aasim ad-Duhaak ibn Mukhalid related to us., Abd’l-Hamid ibn Ja`far ibn Abdallah al-Ansari related to us, Muhammad ibn `Amr ibn `Ataa al-Qurashi al-`Aamiri related to us…. He said: “I heard Abu Humayd as-Sa`adi, who was present among ten of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, among whom was Abu Qatada, say the following. ‘ I am the most learned of you regarding the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace.’ They said to him: ‘How is this? By Allah! You did not follow him more than us nor did you proceed us in companionship to him.’ He replied: ‘Indeed, this is true.’ They then said: ‘Then show us.’ He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace when he stood for the prayer he would raise his hands equal with his shoulders. He would then make the takbir letting all of his limbs settle in their proper places . He would then recite the Qur’an. He would then make the takbir, raising his hands equal with his shoulders. He would then make the ruku`u, placing his hands upon his knees. He made his back straight, neither lifting his head nor tucking it in. He would then raise his head saying Sami`a Allahu Li man Hamidahu. He would then raise his hands equal with his shoulders and say the takbir. He would then descend to the earth in prostration spreading his arms away from his sides. He would then raise his head and fold his left foot and sit upon it. He would then prostrate and spread the toes of his feet when he prostrated. He would then make the takbir, raise up and fold his left foot and sit upon it. His limbs would return to their proper places. He would then do the same in the remainder of the prostrations. He would then stand from the two raka`ats make the takbir and raise his hands equal with his shoulders in the same manner as he made the takbir at the beginning of the prayer. He would then do the same as above in the remainder of the prayer. When he was in the final prostration in which he made the salaam, he would extend his left foot and sit upon his left hip.” They all said: “You have told the truth. Likewise did he, may Allah ta`ala bless him and grant him peace perform his prayer.”
The proof of praying Irsaal (placing one hands to the side) versus qabd (folding ones hands on their chest).
I say and success is with Allah, the legal evidences for letting the hands hang by the sides (irsaal al-yadayn) during the obligatory prayers are many. The most important proof is in the prophetic tradition related on the authority of Abu Humayd as-Sa`adi due to the perfection of its soundness and the clarity with which it proves the soundness of irsaal. Five different narrators, among them al-Bukhari, Abu Dawuud, at-Tirmidhi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ibn Khuzayma, related this tradition.
I will first put forward the tradition related by Abu Dawuud in his Sunan because its expression is the clearest in showing the evidence for irsaal. Abu Dawuud related his chain authority thusly:
Ahmad ibn Hanbal related to us.
Abu `Aasim ad-Duhaak ibn Mukhalid related to us.
Abd’l-Hamid ibn Ja`far ibn Abdallah al-Ansari related to us.
Muhammad ibn `Amr ibn `Ataa al-Qurashi al-`Aamiri related to us.
By Allah! You did not follow him more than us nor did you proceed us in companionship to him.’ He replied: ‘Indeed, this is true.’ They then said: ‘Then show us.’ lقَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا قَامَ إِلَى الصَّلَاةِ يَرْفَعُ يَدَيْهِ حَتَّى يُحَاذِيَ بِهِمَا مَنْكِبَيْهِ ثُمَّ يُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى يَقِرَّ كُلُّ عَظْمٍ فِي مَوْضِعِهِ مُعْتَدِلًا
He said: ‘The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace when he stood for the prayer he would raise his hands equal with his shoulders. He would then make the takbir letting all of his limbs settle in their proper places.
Imam Muhammad al-Khidr as-Signets said: “The scholars as well as the elite know that the terms settle and fall in these two narrations means to be established and remain in its place. There can be no doubt that the proper place for the two hands is by the sides. This alone is the proof for irsaal during the prayer. No one will dispute this except someone who is mad or obviously arrogant. It is not possible for a reasonable person to consider that placing the two hands upon the chest or beneath the navel is the natural place for the hands, because this is a denial of what is obvious. Thus, the above two narrations are explicit proofs concerning irsaal during the prayer.”
My dear Brothers if qabd during the prayer was an essential sunna of the prayer, then Abu Humayd as-Sa’adi would not have neglected to mention it when the Companions asked him to demonstrate the way the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace prayed. Had he left anything essential from the prayer, the Companions would have said: “You have made an error.” Alternatively, they would have said: “You have neglected to mention so-and-so.” However, they did not object to his description because he was the most learned of the description of the prayer of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace than them.
    Imam al-Shawkani mentioned in Nayl al-Awtar (2:201),
[A]nd the narration of irsal (laying the arms straight in prayer) is the narration of the majority of his students, and it is the famous among them (referring to Malik and the Maliki scholars).
    Imam al-Shawkani also stated:
Ibn al-Munthir narrated that Ibn al-Zubayr, al-Hasan al-Basri and al-Nakh’ai all used to lay their arms straight in the prayer, and not put the right hand over the left.

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr also narrates in his book al-Tamheed (20:76):
‘Abd Allah ibn al-Izar said, “I used to make tawaf around the Kaba with Said ibn al-Jubayr. Once, he saw a man placing one hand over the other, so he went to him, separated his hands, and then returned to me.
From this, we notice that placing one hand over another in prayer was considered by him to be a munkar, because he changed it with his hand, which is only acceptable in relation to the munkarat. Furthermore, it is apparent from this athar that at the Masjid al-Haram, there were few people seen putting their hands over each other in the prayer, indicating that the custom was otherwise. And this was during the time of the Sahabah and Tabi’een.
    Also narrated in al-Tamheed:
‘Abd Allah ibn Yazid said, “I never saw Said ibn al-Musayyib holding his left hand with his right hand in the prayer, he used to lay them straight.
Sa’id ibn al-Musayyib was one of the biggest Tabi’een in Madina, and this was thus the practice of the people of Madina that Imam Malik witnessed.
Ibn Abu Shaybah narrated that al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibrahim al-Nakh’ai, Ibn al-Musayyib, Ibn Sirin, and Sa’id ibn Jubayr all laid their arms straight in the prayer.

Teachers and Students Of Imam Malik Ibn Anas
    Rabiyahr Ra’i
Rabiyahr Ra’i was the first teacher of Imam Malik, from whom he learned extreme love and respect for the Holy Prophet (saw). Once another teacher of Imam Malik asked Rabiyahr Ra’i a question and Rabiyahr Ra’i gave the wrong answer.
That teacher then asked Imam Malik (who knew the correct answer) Imam Malik told him “My teacher has given the answer”. Such was the respect and love that Imam Malik held for his teachers that he never spoke ill of them to their face or behind their back.
    Ibn Hurmaz
Ibn Hurmaz was the second teacher of Imam Malik. He was a non Arab, a freed slave and also blind, yet held an extremely high statutes in Medina because of his knowledge. Imam Malik studied with his teacher Ibn Hurmaz for seven consecutive years with no break in his time table.
He used to do his housework, take him to the market and the mosque and used to study daily with him from Fajr to Isha. Ibn Hurmaz was the teacher who Imam Malik was referring to when he said “I learnt absolutely everything from”.
When Imam Malik was asked what was the most valuable thing he learnt from his teacher, during seven consecutive years of studying. Imam Malik replied “the phrase ‘I don’t know’ was the most valuable thing I learnt from my teacher”.
Once a man came to visit Imam Malik from Morocco just to ask him a question, after the Moroccan had asked his question, Imam Malik informed him that he did not know the answer to that question.
The Moroccan became worried and asked Imam Malik what he should tell his people back home in Morroco, Imam Malik told him to inform his people that Imam Malik did not know the answer to this particular question.
Such was the integrity of Imam Malik who (at that time) had seven consecutive years of learning behind him. If he wasn’t 100% sure about something, he wouldn’t assume, guess or hesitate from informing the questioner that he did not know the answer.
After studying for seven consecutive years with Ibn Hurmaz, Imam Malik spent the following 30 years learning from him as well, but not consecutively.
    Nafi’ Ibn Umar
Nafi’ Ibn Umar was the third teacher of Imam Malik. He was an African freed slave, from Africa who spoke poor Arabic. He was the freed slave of Abdullah Ibn Umar, and possessed the shortest chain of transmission to the Holy Prophet (saw).
He was extremely knowledgeable; however his weakness was his short temper. He was also a busy individual, which is why he could only hold one study circle in a day in the mosque. In his study circle he would only allow grey haired people to ask questions, this is because he believed that youngster should listen and learn and not talk.
This however did not deter Imam Malik who was 24 year old at that time and would try to catch Nafi’ Ibn Umar in a good mood and ask a question whenever he could. Imam Malik managed to ask three questions a week and compiled a book based on these answers.
    Ibn Shihab Zuhri
Ibn Shihab Zuhri was the fourth teacher of Imam Malik. He was well read and very intelligent. His wife had said that if her husband had taken on three other wives it would not have hurt her as much as the pain that she derives from his obsession with books. Scholars have said that he passed away as a result of a large collection of books falling on him.
Imam Malik used to tie a knot on his thread whenever he heard his teacher narrate a hadith. Once his teacher taught 30 hadiths, however Imam Malik had only tied 29 knots on his thread. He went to clarify this matter with his teacher who became angry and pointed out that he had never forgotten a hadith once he had heard it.
He was very particular about such matter and pointed out that students should not have such short memories. In another incident Imam Malik went to visit Ibn Shihab Zuhri straight after his Eid prayer, he refused any offer of food and told his teacher that he was here to study.
Ibn Shihab Zuhri taught him 40 hadiths including the chains of transmissions and told him to go away and learn them. Imam Malik informed his teacher that he had learnt them and narrated all the 40 hadiths including the chain of transmission from memory. Ibn Shihab Zuhri praised his extraordinary knowledge and called him a “Container of Knowledge”.
    Jafar Al Sadiq
Jafar Al Sadiq was the fifth teacher of Imam Malik. He was the great grandson of Imam Hussein and taught Imam Malik the spiritual dimensions of worship. Whenever Imam Malik went to visit his teacher, he always found him either reciting the Qur’an, fasting or offering prayer.
    Muhammad Ibn Al Munkadir
Muhammad Ibn Al Munkadir was sixth teacher of Imam Malik, who also taught him extreme love for the Holy Prophet (saw). Whenever the name of the Holy Prophet (saw) was mentioned in the presence of Muhammad Ibn Al Munkadir, tears would begin to flow in his eyes.
    Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Al Qasim
Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Al Qasim was one of the students of Imam Malik. He spent most of his life with Imam Malik and preserved the Fiqh of Imam Malik in writing for the coming generations. His lifestyle greatly differed from Imam Malik’s.
He was not well dressed, did not have good relations with the rulers, nor did he ever accept a gift from them. However neither the teacher nor the student ever condemned one another. Our mentality however is more narrow minded, we seem to be convinced that we are right whilst those who do not do as we do are wrong.
Abdur Rahmaan Ibn Al Qasim has said “Don’t be free yet a slave”. He was referring to emotional attachments with others which control our actions. When we are emotionally attached to someone, technically we are not “free”, but slaves of our emotions.
He claimed that his only regret in life was that he had spent one year learning Fiqh which he should have spent learning Manners. Knowledge is only part of Islam. Whereas Islam IS good manner, it’s about incorporating the mannerism of our Holy Prophet (saw) into our personas. Love and respect from others is not gained via knowledge. It is gained through gentle dispositions, approachable characters, easy going natures, and Loving/compassionate/patient and tolerant personalities.
Today however, there is more emphasis on knowledge and little or no emphasis on good manners. One should also know that it’s easy to acquire knowledge yet incredibly difficult to morally perfect our characters.

    Imam Malik’s View:
The dislike of qabd in the fard and its permissibility in the nafl if one is standing for a long time in order to make it easier on him. (i.e. a rukhsa)
This is the opinion narrated by Ibn al-Qasim in al-Mudawanna (1:74) and in al-Tamheed (20:75) al-Layth as-Sa’d is reported to have said:
The laying of the hands if prayer is preferred, unless he is standing for an extended period and becomes tired, then there is no problem (la ba’as) in putting the right hand over the left.
Al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih (1:401) in the chapter entitled, “Using the Hands in Prayer for Help, if it is Part of the Prayer” that Ibn Abbas said:
A person can use any part of his body for support. Abu Ishaq placed his head cover (over his arms) in prayer and raised it (as a sling), and ‘Ali placed his palm over his left wrist, unless scratching his skin or straightening his clothes.
Thus, putting the hands over each other in prayer is permissible when used as a means for support in cases of standing in prayer for a prolonged period of time, as is narrated of ‘Ali and as Ibn Hazm explicted stated in his al-Muhalla (4:113),
And we have narrated of ‘Ali that when he stood in prayer for a long time, he used to hold his left arm with his right hand at the origin of the palm, unless straightening his clothing or scratching his skin.
Standing for extending periods of time is a characteristic of the nafl rather than the fard prayer, as the Prophet ordered the imam to be light in the fard.
    Imam al-Shawkani mentioned in Nayl al-Awtar (2:201),
[A]nd the narration of irsal (laying the arms straight in prayer) is the narration of the majority of his students, and it is the famous among them (referring to Malik and the Maliki scholars).

There's aahadith which state the Prophet did Qabd the statements of Scholars aren't proof when there's Hadith. We follow the opinions of Scholars when they're in agreement and aligned with the Text. Blind following is prohibited and you'll be questioned about it by Allah Yamul Qiyaamah we are commanded to follow only Rasoolullah. Taking from the schools of thought is permissible as long as you don't go into extremes and disregard clear cut texts from the Quran or Authentic Hadith.

According to Imam Malik, one has the face towards the Qibla as Allah says, “So turn your faces towards the Sacred Mosque” (Quran 2:144). So, during sitting and standing, one would face the Qibla. During the Ruku, one looks straight down.
Although there is a sound Hadith saying that one should look at the place of prostration, the reasoning of Imam Malik is that to abrogate or set a condition to an ayah would require a proof as strong as an ayah. You can have a strong Hadith (sahih) but if its chain is single (ahaad), then it cannot abrogate an verse of the Quran which is at the level of mutwattir and thus stronger than ahaad.

Interesting to note all hadiths which mentions Qabd (praying with the hands folded) are according to the science of Jarh wa-tawil (Science of hadith narrators) either weak or the matn is weak. But due to the hadiths being numerous in every generation it raises them to mutwatir but even then the Ulema are in disagreement within the 3 schools (hanafi, shafi, hanbali) about the positions of the hands.

    As salaam wa aleikum
The brother here while giving the description of prayer
on the Rafa Ul Dain he was so clear said the prophet pbuh did it and in the grave will be asked about how the prophet did it and not how the others say
When he said about the hands on chest , below chest on navel
Why dint he show how the prophet did it (did the prophet put his hands on chest and below chest and navel or he did only one particular position or he did all three ??)
About going in the Sujood he the brother said about two ways and said we believe ( what did the prophet pbuh did both ways or one particular way )
Raising the finger in tasshahud again the brother describing said we believe (What did the prophet do exactly?)
Why the brother on Rafa ul dain he was so clear that this how the prophet did and said no matter big or small imam said something else it doesn’t matter but the prophet pbuh did Rafa ul Dain
And the other position I mentioned here was not clear what the prophet pbuh did he said we believe and we say
    Why ?

  • @ammimen

    Stages.
Initially we know the prayer was done with the hands at the side.
This is how the pagans also prayed and so the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) differed from them ... and taught the companions to pray with their hands upon their chest (Sadr).
Later, after fath Mecca, once there was no fear of confusion with the pagans, the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned to praying with his hands down. Allowing all of the joints of the body to return to their natural, relaxed position.
    This is what I learned,
There are many in this group that know better than me
    and Allah knows best.

Just because you have no clue about the authenticity of Hadith that does not mean that it is flawed. This question is flawed logic. "Who decides that what is authentic Sunnah?". I ask you another question with the same kind of logic. Who decides what color is sky?. You can see how absurd this gets when we go down to this level. Al Bukhari was not the first collection of Hadith. There were other manuscripts and sahaba used to record hadith too. Secondly, if you are saying that the written text is the only authenticity factor then you are rejecting Quran also because there were many tribes who only memorized Quran and never saw A written Quranic text.

mohamed abubacker: I have great respect to Hadeeth and his science. But we have to do first think first
1- Start with Quran, it is the most authentic, clear, well expressed book without human factor in it
2- Understand Hadeeth Sahih means high probability that our prophet said, it is not like Quran in authenticity.
3- Be careful of Hadeeth that contradict Quran, political Hadeeth, racial Hadeeth, and Hadeeth with too much rewards for saying very simple Thinks. I did not say ignore it all together, but it will never be the core of our religion. Also, remember it could be fabricated regardless of Authenticity.
4- Prioritize your life as Quran prioritize it.

As this sheik would say, "Your cup is full"...There is a problem with your understanding of what authentic is. Quran is undoubtedly authentic but it will also define the definition of authenticity. Surely Quran was not revealed to you directly. It was recorded and delivered to us by the sahaba of the Nabi(SAW). Allah has protected his deen and Allah told us to take from the Rasool(SAW), how can you take from Rasool when you deny hadith....Quran has got clear verses and ambiguous verses. those ambiguous verses require the explanation from Rasool Allah(SAW).

The way Quran recorded and recited in a very very very different way than Sunna. Any person who learn Quran very well know this. Even the language, word selection, wisdom, integration etc are very challenging by itself. The Sunna is collected more than 200 years after Quran. Any body who study Sunna know the effect of politics and non muslims on it. The Sheick and many others has the right and privilege to help us find which sunna is most likely said by our prophet. The expression MOST LIKELY is the best expression to use when you use the word authentic. Actually authentic in Hadeeth means most likely.

Waqas well said. Don't argue with those who only take from the Qur'an. Even though we know they don't believe in the Qu'ran it self. Otherwise how do they ignore this noble ayats:
      Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 21:
Indeed in the Messenger of Allah (Muhammad SAW) you have a good example to follow for him who hopes in (the Meeting with) Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.
      (English - Mohsin Khan)
      Surah Al-Hashr, Verse 7:
What Allah gave as booty (Fai') to His Messenger (Muhammad SAW) from the people of the townships, - it is for Allah, His Messenger (Muhammad SAW), the kindred (of Messenger Muhammad SAW), the orphans, Al-Masakin (the poor), and the wayfarer, in order that it may not become a fortune used by the rich among you. And whatsoever the Messenger (Muhammad SAW) gives you, take it, and whatsoever he forbids you, abstain (from it), and fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Severe in punishment.
      (English - Mohsin Khan)
      Surah Aal-e-Imran, Verse 31:
Say (O Muhammad SAW to mankind): "If you (really) love Allah then follow me (i.e. accept Islamic Monotheism, follow the Quran and the Sunnah), Allah will love you and forgive you of your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."
