I remember this mission, especially the landing. Once the vehicle was saved and the crew came out, John Young walked all around Columbia with the biggest smile on his face. I’ve never seen a pilot more pleased with his craft.

He was probably saying "Good girl!" as he walked around Columbia

I worked a lot of manned spaceflight missions in the 70's and 80's and that John Young walk-around was my favorite moment of all!

I remember this, I was young... 2nd grade maybe.... and coming back to class (no clue why I was not in class) and seeing the librarians watching it... I ran back to my class room and was fanatically excited... convinced teacher this was a historical moment and we need to go see it... and we did. It was awesome.

Yeah, watching him pump his fists in pure elation was emotional for me. Especially when you consider that he privately thought he had a 50% chance of dying on this flight.

@@maureenobrien4968 that and from what i heard on a nasaspacedlight forum, something to the effect of, “don’t touch it, let me look at her first”

Crip and Young, what can I say? Those 2 had the biggest balls of anyone that ever graced the space program and beyond. Young was solid, disembarked like it was nothing. Those were the days when the nation was proud of such accomplishments.

Great job, Simon. Thanks for your hard work.
Didn't realize that they landed without a parachute. Good Ole' John--straight down the line.
John was just a little itchy to get out! Don't blame him. And like every good pilot--check out the bird after landing.
A great mission of the first flying Shuttle.

I was a shift operations supervisor at the Guam tracking station during this mission. My crew was working during the last GWM contact just before landing. The spacecraft was about 100 miles up when we had loss of signal (LOS) at the end of our pass.

Awesome I remember that day like it was yesterday. Several of us skipped our classes and ducked in a department store on Pittsburgh to watch the landing. Dozens of strangers gathered together to watch this and a big cheer and sigh of relief went up when Columbia landed! We were all so proud of the astronauts, NASA and the USA 🇺🇸

I was 8 years old and saw Columbia lift off on tv from our apartment in NYC. 22 years later, with a pain in my gut, I saw her destruction along with the crew from our backyard in Houston only 100 miles south of the impact.
Years later, I visited a space toy and memorabilia shop only 5 minutes from JSC. One of the items there was an autographed photo of Kalpana Chawla.
The store owner barely fought back the tears. He said she visited the store often as well as other astronauts. He remarked how humble and swell people they were.
Humble folks putting it on the line for exploration of God's creations.

As others have mentioned, and as I have mentioned previously, Young’s euphoric behavior when doing the walk around after disembarking Columbia was just awesome to see. He didn’t want anyone touching her.

1:30:00 - Here Columbia flies over my birthplace in Evergreen Park, Illinois, and my alma mater in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Reentry glow begins just after 3:49:00. Then after the landing, we get some great views of the dry lake bed.
