July 26th 1971 - the first Apollo "J" mission launches from Pad 39A at 13:34 UTC - onboard are astronauts Dave Scott, Al Worden and Jim Irwin.
This presentation contains pre flight footage and associated media from NASA and films relating to the lunar rover. It also contains some film and audio from the Mr Rogers meets Al Worden series.

I was one of those teens that WASN’T “bored” with this and made sure to check tv for coverage of the mission at Hadley Rille🌗 first REAL geology mission with Lee Silver & Jack Schmitt educating Dave & Jim as well as Farouk El-Baz working with Al Worden for what to see from orbit🌗

It was a live prime-time television extravaganza: they landed between mountains on the moon, built a car on the moon, drove the car on the moon, photographed boulders the size of houses on the moon, all broadcast in color from the moon. All this amazing stuff and practically nobody watched.
I remember Al Worden’s guest appearance on Mr. Rogers! Apollo 15 continues to be one of my favorite missions. I wish the coverage in the day had been anywhere near this, but I’m grateful to you showing current and future generations this incredible achievement. (Oh, those ‘70s soundtracks! 😂)

I'd like to say the graphics and tracking as well as the seamless move from video to graphics during the launch is excellent
I remember watching this launch while I was recovering from knee surgery, I had my tape recorder by the TV Speaker so I could record the NBC news audio of the launch. Unfortunately, through the years the tapes got lost. I wish I had them now! Apollo 15 was one of the few launches that the anchormen for NBC kept quiet during the launch so you could hear the entire ride to orbit with no commentary by the anchors. I wish I had those tapes now. By the way, the pieces with Mr. Rodgers were neat to watch. Have you read the book about the production of the lunar rover? I can't recall the title, but it is a great book. Everything else was great as always! Simon, you keep getting better and better! Keep all the productions going, can't wait to see what's next! -Jim

Your best yet Simon! I absolutely LOVE the status bar on the bottom of the screen. Taking a page from SpaceX it seems! I just wish I was old enough to remember these flights (I was only 4 years old for this one). Thank you for putting these wonderful videos together to allow us to relive the past greatness of our space program. I only wish we had the commitment today in the USA that we did for the early flights of Apollo (I know the commitment waned after Apollo 11). I still have zero confidence that we'll return to the moon in my lifetime (no matter what they say about SLS). Please keep up the awesome work you do!
As usual, the effort you put into these videos is incredible. I was previously well aware of that shot below the engines (2:52:07) being undigitized, and it's great to see it here, as well as that shot from 39-5, possibly the clearest transfer of it yet.
I liked the addition of the progress bar as well. Do you think you'll be keeping that for Apollo 14?

When I watched the actual launch on tv I thought it was the slowest rising Saturn V I had seen yet. Think I was in junior high school. It seems it took 15 a while to clear the tower. And I thought cause it had the added load of the rover and much more scientific equipment. Worden 1st deep spacewalk. Adventurous. After Apollo 8 and 10. Fifteen my favorite.

Simon: did you change your name to "Santa"? It feels like Christmas in July to see this latest offering, a bit more poignant with the recent loss of Joe Engle. EVA Day 1 on this mission produced one of my vivid memories of the Apollo program, seeing Hadley Rille from the tv camera mounted to the Rover when Scott & Irwin first parked near the edge and aligned the antenna. I was riveted to the chair in front of the television. This flight also taught NASA the value of providing a soft brush to clean the tv camera lens on the Rover, as the statically charged lunar dust would cling to the glass of the lens (and just about everything else, too), noticeably obscuring the tv picture, a brush being included for the last 2 lunar missions. Happily, mission CDR "Great Scott" is still with us. I hope he gets to enjoy your work. Well done once again.
