Ah the simple compass! Not only for digging holes in your school desk! Great video mate. I use the trend easy scribe for straighter scribes like that worktop and a compass for more detailed scribes, both are always to hand!
Hi Steven. Isn't it funny that the compass makes us think about our school days.🤩 The Trend scriber is one of those things on my wish list.🤪 Thanks for your comment.👍Cheers.
Nice little tip and sure I have one of these lying around. How would you scribe a cupboard fitted into a fire place side recess where the cupboard sticks out from the recess and fireplace side wall by about 15cm?
Hi there🖐If I understand correctly, your cupboard sticks out past the fireplace recess 150mm🤔In this case the scribe must be either set back so it is slightly behind the front face of the recess and scribed at this point👍This will be tricky as you will need to mark the scribe without the unit in place. I would cut my panel to be scribed tight to the top and bottom of the opening, wedge it in perfectly plumb and upright, and carefully measure from the other side, accommodating the cupboard width, to get my scribe point, and scribe the wall from there🫡Hope this helps🤞Cheers Del
I'd put a bit of masking tape around that compass, some porcelain can mark easily from metal,I had to replace a pan that I had scratched from my metal watch strap.
Hi mate , No many have a compass now, but I have at least three very old ones with long needles on them , there is no better for scribing, you need to grind that nib of the compass and form a long needle , also great for stabbing anyone who gets in your way 👍, forget all these scribing tools they are overpriced rubbish , I have only seen one worth it’s salt and it is a log scribing tool but over £100 so will body swerve that one , I’ve been at this site carpentry for 43yrs now the standard has gone down the pan but the tools are a shocking price , but I so enjoy it 👍
Hi Dermot. I think you're right about some of the more expensive scribing tools, and in many cases, its just a reinvention of the wheel with a bigger price tag😬 I do agree that standards have been slipping over the years, and it's important for as many of us as possible to try and keep our standards high😎 (which is not always easy with low rates and tight schedules😖). Great to have watching bud and thanks for your comment 😎 Cheers Del
Nice one Jim. I tend to get through these compass fairly quickly. (the plastic ring breaks). I cant seem to find a really good quality one locally.😮 Thanks for watching and your comment.👍
job well done, love the way you work and the way you do things, proper traditional joiner well done and full respect Sir...
Hi Errol. I was very lucky to have a great apprenticeship under a great teacher.😎 Thanks for kind words. 🤩 Cheers.

Brilliant tip there mate. Thanks for sharing 👍
Hi B13. No problem mate, and thanks for watching.👍
Lovely video, thank you, I keep a selection of washers from small to large and use those for scribing.
That's a great idea Stephen.👍 And super accurate I bet.😎 Cheers.

Thanks Tyler.😎Cheers.
The exact way I do it aswell mate! Using a compass saves so much time and takes any faffing with measurements out 👍
Hi. I know its hardly the tip of the century, but its a cool little use for the humble compass.😎 Great to know you're doing the same.👍Cheers
Why fit skirting when the tiler has done a banging job?
Good point bud, and I wouldn't have fitted it🤔The customer is always right though 😉 Cheers Del
I don't know why, but I LOVE scribing 👍👍
Hi Kevin. I agree with you mate.🤩 Its very satisfying and the more complex the scribe the greater the satisfaction.😍 Great comment.👍 Cheers
Nice tip but surly be be better with plastic trim round shower tray and just leave the tiles how they was 👍 that mdf will look lurvly in a few weeks
I was just following orders Bad Smell.🤪 Thanks for your comment.👍Cheers.

You're absolutely right there Rick.👊 Metal can mark porcelain, so a good shout.😎 Cheers.
@@thetallcarpenter I know a compass marking it may be a bit overkill but as I said one cheap Argos watch cost me nearly £200.00,Great channel
BTW 👍
@@r13gbs Overly cautious or not Rick, it's a good point.😎 Have a good weekend. 👍

Also seen the latter scribe done with a penny washer
Hi Dan. 👋 The washer trick is great way as you say. 😎 Cheers.
Why would anyone want a piece of Mdf skirting board on wall to floor tiling lol 👍
Hi Mark. 'no comment'. 😬🤐
That’s a plumbers job lol 😂
@@markhoulding1938 You're bad Mark.😝
@@markhoulding1938 I’m a Plumber & I’d make a better job of it than most of the ‘Wood Butchers’ I know!!
I find my knuckle or even the pencil itself for this type of rough work good enough. Not like the timber is piss or waterproof anyway
Hi Lee. MDF is not great in a bathroom.😝 Cheers.
I use a trend easy scribe, does the same job
Hi Tom. I got to get one really as I hear they are good as you say.👍 Cheers.
Easyscribe is great. Solid graphite leads and keeps the width locked in nicely 👍
@@Sjf542 I think I've got to get one Stuart.🤩 Cheers
👍
😎
Exactly the same compass as mine
IVE MADE IT MA!!
Hey Craig. That's cool man.😎Mine don't seem to last that long before the plastic breaks though.😵Cheers
Bit of tape works a treat 😂
@@craigbarry1340 Of course.🤦♂️ Cheers.
The very same way as i do my scribing, only I’ve got a compass with a longer pin so it can get into real fine details it must be about 30 years old 😜

Why do you need skirting when its tiled ?
Soz read other comments just seems silly using skirting good tip use it all the time
