Fungus gnats are never a fun topic but I hope you liked the video anyway! This is the automatic watering system I was talking about: amzn.to/32tCBxS And of course, if you already have fungus gnats just be sure to watch my video on how I got rid of them -- ua-cam.com/video/v-t1yjPxw0w/v-deo.html Have a beautiful gnat-free day!!
Hello Nicole, I Certainly Appreciate your Kindness In Sharing with Is How Gnats get into Your House/ Apartment…I’m from Los Angeles California USA 🇺🇸..I just Started Gardening In September 2021…And Here Comes the Gnat problems…I Appreciate your Kindness…Mega Love 🙏🏾🥰
I seen them run boiling water through a strainer to kill everything in the soil before using it. I use a small torch to burn them when they first come up in the morning and evening but make sure you have a spray water bottle with you dampen soil after burning surface of soil.
Thankyou for such great advice,I never thought of microwaving it,that's brilliant..how long do you suggest microwaving it for please??.. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻yep fungus gnats & aphids drive me bonkers..so really appreciate your tips & advice, thankyou, have a fantastic day & Take care 🙏🏻☮🤘🏻💜🦋🌻🙏🏻☮🤘🏻💜🦋🌻..
Thank you for such an informative and useful video. I would be very careful about using microwaving as a technique for removing fungus gnats from your potting mix as worse than removing nutrients from the potting mix, it will kill all the microbial bio-activity in the potting mix. A potting mix is like a miniaturised version of soil. Good health soil requires compost (humus), sand, clay, and loam (I believe that is correct). This mixture in regular soil assists in encouraging lots of microbial activity and certain relations between tiny bacteria in the soil and the roots of your plants. These interactions allows for much more efficient exchange of nutrients in the plants, hence bigger root growth, and hence further productions of plant mass. The advantage of soil is that when you plant a garden bed you are meant to aerate it after your harvest and this can be done using a pitchfork. When planting in containers (such as your balcony garden) you can’t do this. In fact the rate of decay of essential elements of the potting mix is much more rapid, especially if living in a humid environment. Hence the material starts to compress and rot and this eventually causes the plants to become very ill. It also means the potting mix has to be thrown out. However if you add a few soil amendments into your potting mix before you plant your plants (such as perlite) it keeps the soil from becoming compressed and hence the decay of the potting mix, and thence the attractive environment in which gnat flies like to breed. Using part coco coir (you can buy expandable bricks of it which you out in a wheel barrow with water and they expand to occupy up to 90L of potting media), is also helpful, as gnat flies do not like this. Additionally, if you purchase premium potting mix it usually has already been treated in a harmless way to have the gnat flies removed. Finally, it is also possible to discourage and prevent gnat fly infestation by using vermiculite as a surface dressing for the potting media. This is also an effective deterrent for other common pest infestations. So really a potting mix of 2 parts Perlite, 2 parts Premium Potting Mix. 2 parts Coco Coir, 1 part Propagation Soil, a bit of Vermiculite as top dressing then you should be fine. Buy some seaweed plant fertiliser juice + Buy some Mycorrhizal Innoculant. In separate containers, mix them in with water according to the instructions. Poor the seaweed mix on your plants first, and then the Mycorrhizal Innoculant. If you have very warm humid weather and lots of sun you should get spectacular growth within a few weeks I would avoid any pesticides, insecticides, or herbicides unless they’re organic and largely ≠-toxic (like a pyrethrum spray - but be careful to wash it off the sprayed areas of edible plants if you intend to eat those plants eventually). You want pollinators in your garden to help pollinate your vegetables to keep them as productive for as long as possible.
Thank you so much for this Nichole I have been battling a fungus gnats infestation for almost 5 months. I tried everything under the sun and eventually had to switch my plants to leca! But I noticed that my fungus gnats were coming from the soil I was buying. I will definitely try microwaving my soil now. Thank you.
Hi You can use Pure Crop 1 against Fangs Gents if you test the substance it is used to control a lot of pests. I would be happy if you tell me about your experience with the material Hadas

Use some Eight liquid Garden pest spray dilute it with water and spray the top of the soil.

Hadas
I always put my potting soil in a jar and zap in the microwave. So far no problems.
That's great. Works for me too :)
