    What is Dental Hygiene?
Oral hygiene is an important part of dental health maintenance, and the hygienist has a crucial role in helping you maintain this. At Ruh Dental, our hygienists have extensive training in spotting signs of oral disease with a focus on preventing it.
Lana Fattah (FdSc Oral Health Science) is a Professional Hygienist at Ruh Dental London (ruhdental.com/dental-team/mis.... Lana's patients quickly learn that hygiene sessions are primarily a routine medical treatment that is paramount for the prevention of gingivitis (reversible gum disease) and periodontitis (irreversible gum disease). It’s only when healthy teeth and gums have been established that cosmetic dentistry such as airflow and whitening treatments are possible.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT DENTAL HYGIENE
How can I remove staining from my teeth?
Teeth can stain for a variety of reasons due to the food and drink we consume and other activities such as smoking. This can result in discoloured and yellow looking teeth. During a hygiene visit, our hygienists can remove this staining using specialised instruments which can make your teeth look whiter and provide advice on how to avoid staining on teeth. Furthermore, all of our hygienists have been trained in tooth whitening procedures if you are looking to generally improve the colour of them and have a whiter, more aesthetic smile.
Plaque? Tartar? Calculus? What does all of this mean?
Dental plaque is the build up on the smooth part of the teeth which is soft and removable with a normal toothbrush. It is a complex mixture of food build up, skin from the mouth, saliva proteins and millions of bacteria. They use all of the above as a food source to live off which allows them to thrive and initiate gum disease. Dental plaque can easily be removed with daily toothbrushing and correct flossing technique.
Tartar or calculus is similar but it is the hardened, yellow version of plaque. This is what develops if the plaque is allowed to persist over a period of time and harden with the salts contained in saliva. This require mechanical removal as it has hardened and will not be amenable to removal with standard toothbrushing. Common sites for this to occur are in the insides of the lower front teeth.
If plaque and tartar are allowed to persist, they can result in gum disease which is why it is important to ensure the correct toothbrushing and flossing techniques are employed in order to prevent this.
