  • Dr Renée explains the causes of hyperthyroidism and the treatments. This can often lead to hypothyroidism or complete loss of thyroid tissue which then needs Thyroid replacement therapy. She touches again on the controversial T4/T3 combination therapy. Below are the various groups, petitions and NHS consultation that she mentions.
Thyroid UK offer a wealth of information on all of the topics covered in this video and other Thyroid disorders. They can be found at:
    www.thyroiduk.org.uk/
There is a petition demanding that T3 is not withdrawn from the many patients in the UK that currently use it. You can sign the petition here:

Please complete the NHS Consultation on Liothyronine. You can do that here:

I’m taking methimazole, and have reduced gluten from my diet to help with Graves Disease. I think one of my first symptoms was insomnia, and menstrual issues (a cycle every 18 days), panic attacks and mood issues, weight loss. I’m hoping this gets better

hln1969 Hiya. Thanks for those lovely comments. It's a fight for us all. I have just published this blog in the biggest GP magazine Pulse. Look at some of the comments from doctors 😩. We will win this fight, I'm sure. You could write to your CCG. I have and I am seeing my MP next week. Good

Dr Renee, yes I've seen your article in a couple of fb groups and we are eagerly sharing it. Unfortunately, once we as patients rate your article, it can only be read by a professional who's signed up. I'll write to the CCG etc. I've got a feeling I'm going to be refused T3 after 3 months supply so will have to either buy myself again or ask for a private prescription but I'm not giving up! Thanks again, we can do this...

I take it and it really helps me! I also take “thyroid calm” by Herb Pharm. The Carnitine works fast, too. If I feel my thyroid ramping up and take it within 45 minutes I feel much better. I’ve started taking it at night and the Thyroid Calm 1-3x/day depending on how I feel. So far so good!🙌🏼

I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism early stage since last month. By now I have been taking for 1 month and a half of Phyrotheurocil PTU and beta blockers. I don't yet have goiter and it can't be seen the reason I'm confuse about the disease. I have been experiencing palpitations and atrial fibrosis, joint pains, muscle cramps, hands trembling, headache and underweight severe weight loss. In my lab test it was found that my FT4 is high and my TSH is high. And in my observations, I am experiencing symptoms of hypo and at the same time hyperthyroidism that's why I'm confuse literally.

February 2024 ~ Late to the table here, and, also from Southern California; but was very curious what happened with the petition about not withdrawing T3 as a remedy/medication for treatment of thyroid problems?!? Curious too - why it was to be withdrawn in the first place? I am new to hyperthyroidism - believe I initially developed it in late August 2023 when I caught a bad case of COVID. I was simply not feeling better & went down the Google rabbit hole. Finally, after much research, I went a clinic in November, had blood work done (indicating hyperthyroidism). A few delays occured but just got my blood work re-done recently to confirm that my thyroid levels had not returned to normal, but no improvement! Now my doctor has prescribed Methimazole a few days ago, but I haven't started taking it - worried about the side effects! Lastly, I am scheduled for an ultrasound on my thyroid in March - so we'll see. Glad I came across your UA-cam channel ... ❤️‍🩹

Dr. Renee...for the past 22 years of my life I was diagnosed with autoimmune hashimoto's. I went gluten-free for 9 years, limited dairy, and soy, and I was taken off thyroid medicine. I still had symptoms of being cold even now, dry skin, hair...etc fatigue...but was better with a gluten free diet. In july of this year, my daughter got covid, and I did too though I never tested positve..I was left with a constant low grade fever when my body temp had always been 97 degree, heart palpitations, and night sweats...after the covid virus went away. My TPO numbers where above 500. I was given a beta blocker and thats it...Every day since July I have had racing palpitations...and now my blood pressure has increased from being low most of the time...
What advice can you give me to help.

Good afternoon, everybody! I have a question: Did actually someone get over Graves disease ,did someone really experienced get back healthy after methimazole treatment or get back healty again is just a Chymera? I read a lot of comments where people said after 2-3 years of regression they've experienced falling back to the initial ilness state. I've consulted several endocrinologists and they all speak about a rate of 40-50% of the Graves's patients that managed to completely get rid of the disease ,but I never heard a person to speak about a complete recovery and actually being a complete healthy individual with completely healthy tyroid after being GD patient. Is that possible? To get back healthy again.

I had a virus in my thyroid that lasted about 2-3 months. The doctor first thought I had the onset of Grave's Disease until he did further tests. I went through a series of symptoms that came and went and eventually I became extremely exhausted to the point of sleeping constantly. I didn't have the energy or interest to do anything. This was also accompanied by random tremors in arms, legs and head. There was no treatment other than to let the virus run it's course.

Thanks Doctor, my three and a half year old daughter just had a blood test where it showed she has a high red blood cell count and high haemoglobin, l asked the hemotologist if the red blood cells were small but he said no there normal size, which was a relief because my wife is Thai and has suspected alpha thalassemia minor/trait. However my daughter's Thai grandmother and great grandmother have thyroid disease, my daughter sweats heavy when she exerts herself, meaning if she just runs round a little for a short while she sweats heavily around her head. She gave a second blood sample last week and we are going back to the hemotologist in May 2024, she's going to get a heart scan then, should l ask the hemotologist about a thyroid hormone test when we go back? Thank you

pavithra raji Hi. The treatments are covered in the blog. I’m effect it is suppression of your own thyroid and then replacement hormone or if that fails, radio active iodine to destroy the thyroid enough to make you euthyroid/hypothyroid. I’m afraid their is no treatment to reverse the exophthalmos. It is therefore important to treat as early as possible.

Thank you for the video it is helpful to understand the mechanics of hyperthyroidism. I have been diagnosed with graves disease and my thyroid is very inflamed. I am currently on Carbimazole ( gone from 40mg once a day to now 5mg once a day. Is it possible to only treat with Carbimazole and eventually stop ? I have had a reaction recently but lowering the dose has alleviated the reaction. I am hoping that after a few months or a year I can stop taking Carbimazole altogether, is that a viable path to take?

    • @DrRenee
      @DrRenee  6 років тому +3

La Bohemienne Hi. Glad you found the vlog helpful. The answer is that the carbimazole should be at the lowest dose to keep T4 abs T3 in normal range. Remission usually occurs 18-24 months after starting. At this point it may be possible to have a trial without any medication. If however you return to a hyperthyroid state it is likely that you will need some level of carbimazole for life. Hope that helps. Good luck,

My doctor prescribed me Methimazole and she gave me the option of staying w the medication and hoping that it went away. It can leave but come back... And it's an economical option compared to a surgery or Radioactive pill ($1,000-$5000)... but I asked about pregnancy and my doc said that if I stick to Methiazole it can hurt the fetus, so to prevent that she'll prescribe a pill called PTU to not hurt the bby. BUT ptu has toxic liver damage... so yeah.. there is nothing good out there. Lol but I'm ok with having Liver damage so that my bby could be safe and healthy

Well I am sorry you are disappointed. However, there are some conditions when the body malfunctions that need pharmacology solutions. The risks of not doing so are dangerous sadly.

What about treatig it naturally? I dont wanna have surgery to get another disease, HYPO thyroidism! I know people with it and theyre miserable plus its a known thing in my country that they never give you the dosage you feel good on.
And what happend with prescription of T3? Did they shut it down?

Hi. There is no natural treatment. If you have Graves disease for example the treatment needs to be quick to protect your heart against the excessive stimulation of thyroxine. It could be dangerous therefore to spend time looking for a natural treatment. And yes the aim of treatment if to render the patient hypothryoid but that is much safer in terms of life expectancy than being hyperthyroid. It isn't ideal and I have made my experiences of being treated open in this and other VLOG's.

@@DrRenee What do you suggest I do? I was probably born with Graves bc I've had symptoms since birth and they found it when I was 35. Theyre treating it with thacapzol for the second time now but they're going to talk to me about surgery on the 25'th. I'm so scared and I'm in great back pain aswell. My lower back is very very painful. Dont know why.

Graves Disease isn’t a CAUSE it’s a symptom. This video is not helpful.

Perhaps you could explain your comment further and i will answer. This is an informative and accurate video as a summary of hyperthyroidism but happy to discuss any errors you feel you may have found. And if you would allow me to kick off; Graves disease is most definitely a CAUSE of . hyperthyroidism. It is the underlying autoimmune process that is Graves disease which causes the thyroid to produce excess hormones which in turn causes symptoms. A name (which is what Graves is) for a disease process, can't be a symptom. A symptom is (for example) feeling hot. And if you want further support for this, please check out the first cause here www.nhs.uk/conditions/overactive-thyroid-hyperthyroidism/causes/

      This may help.
      SYMPTOM:
evidence of disease or physical disturbance
broadly : something that indicates the presence of bodily disorder
CAUSE: a person or thing that gives rise to an action, phenomenon, or condition.
SIGN: an indication of bodily condition that can be directly perceived (as by auscultation) by an examining physician
