It took me about a month to complete the G major pattern comfortably enough without looking at the chart. Should I continue learning to play, because that was an effort to say the least.

One thing what took me a long thing about keys is that everyone talks about "the notes available". How can that be because I can just put my finger on any fret I like and play a note? But what musicians mean with "available" is "the notes that, when played along the other notes in the scale, stand a good chance of sounding alright"

I find you can get a lot of really great music theory info from people that play piano, when I first started playing mandolin I found it easier to find the really technical information about music from piano people, they never learn from tabs and generally do things the hard/technical way.

I am learning mandolin. I have a question. Why are there times where someone puts each finger down as they move up the fret and keep it in place? Other times they lift and press each finger separately. When I do both, they sound the same (mostly). So if I was going from the G string to A, B, C etc, when and why would I put each finger down and keep it there? I 'think' I saw him pushing on all fingers on the E string around (10:48) but when at 10:39 and 15:44, he is pressing each on their own without the other top fingers down. I don't understand if I am seeing this wrong or if all fingers are down. In my learnings, everyone says to keep each finger down as you progress the scale. But is it only to help you memorize the pattern and fingering? I don't want to follow the wrong techniques. And, I want to understand when and why I would do one or the other.
