I believe the sound chip in this is the CO 10th Doctor sound chip, where it just cycles those two sounds. I thought it was odd the instructions are clearly for the 2010 iteration.
It’s weird right? When I bought it I expected to need to do a comparison between the original 2010 and this but then when it arrived and it was single button I figured the 12th doctor v1 sonic would be appropriate - clearly I needed both!
It's weird, cause it doesn't do the multi touch hidden sounds, but the sounds themselves are the 11th sounds. So an original 2 sound 10th sound chip with the 11th sounds? Weird one. Or maybe the way surreal wired up the 11th chip it doesn't have the minor delay required to allow for the hidden sounds to activate. I believe the insanely quick responsiveness is stopping the extra sounds from activating cause it doesn't allow it to recognise the second/third tap before it starts lighting up
@@Limes_not_Lemons I don’t think it’s necessarily related to the 10th chip in this case, beyond the fact it’s two alternating sounds. That just happens to be similar I feel. I can’t say I’ve ever seen this before, having owned the 11th toys since they originally came out. So this is pretty interesting to see.
Thank you for reviewing this one! I had been on the fence about it, and you've just confirmed that I made the right call going for a Character Options single button one on eBay.
Glad it was helpful 😊 the single button character options one lacks some of the sensitivity on the touch controls but for my money it’s the better of the two 👍
It’s crazy that the Surreal Entertainment reissue of The Eleventh Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver combines features of both Eleven and the V1 version of Twelve’s, and you don’t get two bonus “secret sounds” like both CO versions have. I seriously thought that SE was just going to straight up reissue the CO version. Great job on the video. Looking forward to your review of the Surreal Entertainment reissue of The Tenth Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver (take your time on that one), and thanks for reviewing The Eleventh Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver reissue!
The online images matched the instructions which show the older two-button design so I couldn't believe it when it incorporated the v1 12th touch controls....even more so when the red button did absolutely nothing! Thanks so much, so glad you enjoyed it. The review of 10s should be ready for next weekend, I filmed the review yesterday so just need to get the editing done this week :)
There’s no ring at all in the core - I originally pointed that out but it got cut in the edit because it was already a long video. There’s actually no ring at all on the core - there’s space for it, they just didn’t put one in
Good thing then that literally the day after my Surreal 12th Doctor Screwdriver arrived at my door (thanks again for the recommendation on that) I chanced into a secondhand Character Options 11th Screwdriver for a really good price, otherwise I might have tried to get Surreal's version.
If you got a character options one for a decent price then you can’t go wrong. I think I’d only recommend this to someone who couldn’t find a character option for cheaper
The instructions look like they show you to twist the bottom and pull down to get at the batteries even though it is a screw of cap.... almost like they took the instructions from the character options instructions....
The red button on the original CO version operated the sonic when the claws were open. I think this reflects the original intention of the prop but Mat Smith instinctively held it in such a way that it made the red button redundant.
I love some of the stories about Matt using this sonic - like the fact it was never supposed to flick open and he ruined the first version by flinging it apart instead of gently pushing the emitter out like 10s. On this toy it just feels like a really weird design choice to maintain if it’s going to have no actual functions!
@@Concreteowl Yeah at first I thought it might be exactly that and it would only work when it was extended but no joy. It seems like the button is there just for aesthetics

The red button doesn’t seem to do anything unfortunately. I’ve tried various different options but it’s having nothing. It seems to just a bit of the physical hangover from the character options mold they were given
Mine hasn't had any issues with the chip shorting out at all - the electronics work great and the spring loaded extender feels very sturdy - the only downside is that you only get two sound effects but if you're fine with that then this is a good model to pick up
I just got mine today, but it won't extend when I press the button. Is there a fix? Or maybe I'm doing it wrong? Edit: Nevermind, I slamed it against my kitchen table enough that it extended... but not in the intended way
YES!!! absolutely agree, I love that version of the toy. The single button version by character options seems to get a lot of love over this one but i'm with you
Those instructions look like the ones from CO's 11th Doctors Sonic Release where it had the physical A button for when the Unit is closed and the Red B button which worked when the unit was closed or open. Defo not the right instructions for this sonic.
Yeah that’s what I thought when I went back to it. Before I bought this though; the promo images I’d seen also had the physical A button so clearly they changed their minds mid-way 😂
This looks quite cheap and yet is more expensive than the character options 12th Doctor version right now, which doesn't have the second button but has more sound effects and looks better. I bought one recently but it had 2 separate buttons on the leather section and had different sounds to the one you demo'd.
I’ve been told the fairly cheap 12th Doctor version available on eBay is often a knock-off that uses the classic sonic screwdriver sound chip (which cycles through 4 different sounds) instead of the authentic Character Options sound chip. I’ve tried to order one from eBay and I returned it because it was clearly not authentic
So character options made 2 versions that were strictly billed as the 11th doctor’s sonic - the one with the red button on the bottom and then the one you’ve picked up which has two buttons in the leather section, one to extend and one to make the sounds etc. they then released a new touch sensitive version as the 12th doctor’s first sonic. Weirdly that one, even though it is fantastic, goes for filthy cheap compared to the others - I think it’s because it is billed as the 12th one
That sounds like it could be the surreal entertainment one - I’ve done a review of that one too. It’s authentic and fully licensed but uses different materials / different plastic and a slightly different sound and lights board to the character options one
It looks like a pretty good re-release(?) of the original touch control sonic screwdriver. Regarding the sounds, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, you have instant sounds and lights. However, this comes at the loss of the secret sounds (which the original delay allowed for).
It’s an on re-release - if they’d tightened up the bottom button so it didn’t flap around it would be better. The sounds are decent and it’s very responsive…but it’s a shame that it can’t handle other options. One of my favourite things about 11th’s sonic was the broken sonic and additional scan sound you got at 3 and 4 taps
@order66collectibles I think the broken sound was used in Closing Time against the cybermat. I see what they were trying to do with the button, but yeah it looks like it didn't really work. But for what it's worth, before this release the touch control version was pretty difficult to find. It looks a good alternative.
The ebay listings that sell multiples tend to be knockoffs tho I believe you can tell by the darker plastic the official ones were never released with that dark of a plastic
This is lazy rlly, is cool that these screwdriver are back out here, but they should try and design them more faithfully to the show, like fixing the emitter shape, and having it flick. Even their 12th doctor one had a drawback with the slow pacing of the circle light effect, this kinda stuff annoys me, I wish they reproduced all the past character sonics and made them more faithful recreations.
100% agree. Especially because these aren’t exactly priced cheap. At $35 state-side I think they’re the same as the original sale price for character options. It feels like a bit of a missed opportunity for some improved or expanded electronics at least even if they didn’t update the physical design. I actually like their 12th sonic but the speed of the circle / chasing light effect is a weird thing to get wrong when they went to the effort of resetting them so they go the show accurate direction 🤦♂️

When I had to go back and check the instructions I felt defeated - do your instructions also show a completely different button setup or is that just mine? I got excited when i thought I'd set it off with the button but it turned out I was just touching the black bit and hadn't realised
Mind you touch the Sonic too much! It might extend... Also I'm VERY sure the instructions are for the original release back in 2010, so that's bizarre. Wtf?
I do love an extender 😂 Right?! I make a rule not to check instructions but I had to go back to them here and for them to turn out to be completely wrong anyway was just too funny
You know your product is bad when the Wish knock-off is better. This is just an outstandingly bad sonic toy. From missing the copper ring on the lower green core (thus the bare indent), to the instructions depicting an entirely different version of this sonic makes me wonder who the hell is running Surreal Entertainment (or Se7en20 as they use the same packaging). Granted the lights and sounds are okay, but the overall exterior product is just plain bad.
There's almost no excuse to have the battery flap and legal nonsense exposed on a toy sonic nowadays. Esepcially for that absurd price point as a toy sonic should cost no more than 20 pounds, and that's being generous.
Yep I agree - the way they hide the legal stuff with both the 10th and 12th Doctor sonics would work here if they made the cream handle section just unscrew from the main body. They’d have to re-do the product design but it would have been worth it for collectors I think and would justify the price
@@order66collectibles By lookng at their inaccurate instructions, it's clear to see they were basing it off the original 2010 version (that had all that stuff on the inside like the others).
