Get the clear ones n do your instructions above then add to a disposable cup n add 5-10 drops of alcohol ink. And you can have many different colors. Metallic alcohol ink takes a lot of drops like 50-60 to get the desired color. Then lay it out on a paper towel to dry. Then you can add them to paintings or resin pieces. I just started a month ago and decided to make my own crushed glass. After I cracked them with a hammer outside, I used to different size colanders to get large and medium size piece. I used a fine strainer to get rid of the sand-liked glass.

Thank you Valerie... keep an eye on it and shuffle it around in the frying pan like we used to do popcorn back in the day... You don't just wanting it sitting still and keep on medium. Don't go too high on heat. I burnt a pan of gems by letting it sit and walking off and leaving it... lol

Sandra...I think that powdered glass will look really nice in art resin for a different type of effect. That colour was so beautiful. Thanks for this tutorial as I had no idea that you can crush it like this. Boy it’s a great way to let your frustrations out. 😝

Thank you! Just be careful.... keep the heat on medium or so and watch them. I have burned a few sets...lol and make sure to cover the glass pebbles with a towel or something and glasses or safety glasses since you are hammering on glass. I put the flat side down of the glass pebble.... makes it easier

Growing up in the 70s my Mom used to bake marbles. The created a crackle inside. Sometimes they broke up too.

Love this but aren't they sharp to work with? And maybe you can use a macaroni strainer and shake out all the smaller pieces

Those fine pieces will look beautiful in resin, too. What if you lightly sprayed some mirror paint on a small batch & see if it looks pretty?

Well the glass pebbles are very dense and thick. You have to heat and ice bath to crack it inside. It will hardly break unless you lay flat side down. Domed side down is almost impossible. Also. Most of the crushed pieces are not sharp like broken shards of glass. So if you were to try. Cover it with something and wear safety glasses. I do that anyway. But you can try it and see before heating. Etc. The pebbles just work well for the size you need for resin when crushed

dont really need that plastic. most likely what making it harder. Just try it without the plastic and make sure the cloth is smooth over it. then you hit directly to them, but it's covered just enough to stay in place. if you use a plastic strainer after, you can separate the big pieces vs the fine pieces. then you can use both in different projects.

Are you putting any water in the pan when you heat them? I tried this today and my pan started to burn. 😞
No... but I have seen someone on youtube boil them in water too. I have a couple of frying pans. The better quality one that is heavier works better... Do not put the temperature on high. Just medium or so. Also, I made the mistake one time of buying acrylic gems instead of glass. They burned and turned brown! LOL... I had to turn the oven overhead fan on with the glass and like I said, medium heat.... and maybe keep an eye on it... I think it really depends on the pan. The only thing too is... I would not use a pan you normally cook with if you plan on doing this a lot. Have a particular pan for heating your glass gems only. I hope this helps... then you chunk them into the ice bath til you see small cracks and proceed from there. I have learned it is easier to break them one gem at a time. It will tear up a towel or ziploc bags, FYI...

Its different.. it almost becomes like a dust. It is not shards

They need to be glass.. acrylic will not work

@@hellokitty4519 Well, not sure you can. I melted a batch. They burn and discolor with the heat. Because they are super condensed, I'm not sure you can break them. Only way I can think is to sandwich them between a towel and try a hammer or mallet. But not sure that will work since they are not heated and cooled to cause the inner breaking.
I would've put the glass in the plastic first, then wrapped it in a towel ti avoid glass shards in the towel
It shredded the towel, and I think the plastic would have been shredded too, either way! LOL
If you heat and ice the glass twice, will you end up with smaller chunks since there will be more cracks?
