We just dyed our basement cement floor with a midnight blue marble floor and the prep was the hardest as it was 20 years old but man its beautiful and we used a matte armor sealer on and then put polish on the matte floor it’s great and I don’t have to worry about anybody cracking their head open and I can dust mop instead of sweeping. And every 5 years we will have to repolish it. I love it 😻...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was for unleaded fuel. Unleaded fuel had a smaller nozzle. Regular leaded gas was a larger nozzle and was cheaper than unleaded gas. You couldn't push the larger nozzle past the spring loaded flap. The Federal emissions guidelines to ensure all the newer cars used unleaded gas was the reason for spring loaded flap in the smaller hole.
Hanzy Scure This is true, but they also came up with a check valve, for both theft deterrent and for rollover incidents so gas doesn't pour out the filler neck if the car is upside down.

Up in the North country in Michigan, there are places that clean, repair and reseal fuel tanks. Just something you might consider. They're pretty reasonably priced also. Love following your various projects. They remind me of me back in the day. Keep up the great work, Mat!!!
Hey Matt I use to work at a radiator shop as a fuel tank tech, if you ever have to clean a old tank again the easiest way to get old varnish gas out of a tank is by soaking it in dawn dish soap and hot water. Let it sit for 2 hours wash it out repeat if needed. Dawn breaks up the the old gas.

If you got a few guys that know what they are doing, he totally could restore it. Its really not in that bad of shape. The Texas environment is really not that bad in terms of leaving a car sitting for a decade or two, especially if it was under trees. My dad and I hauled off a bunch of old cars that were all sitting under trees for a couple of decades, some even longer, and they were all rusty looking, but since they were all under trees, they really werent that bad. We ended up selling one of them, a '63 Bel Air station wagon, to a couple of Hispanic guys that told us they were going to restore it. We already had it half assed running ourselves and the body was just about perfect, trim and all. Just needed a good clean up and new paint.
Matt, cut some of the top off of that tank. Clean it out, then weld it back together. Its on the top of the tank so the gas won't leak too much even if you don't do a great job welding. But we all know that youre a fantastic welder lol

get your shopvac out and then some pvc tubing and and wrap it in duct tape to build up a buffer and stick it on your shop vac hose. then you can get in thru the sender port to vacuum up most of that rust. that is what we do in aircraft maintenance to get around baffle hole ports especially if you put the tank on saw horses upside down.
Its cool the cat cant stay, there is a person with allergies in the home and its not fair to cause a reaction for the sake of something thats not a necessity to have. I was just hoping to get a little vet ranch action from this lol

Rust isn't magnetic though..

You're to young to know this, but your tank fill has an anti-siphon in the filler neck. We had theiving issues back in the '70's with the gas crunch.

So: healthy gas is the same colour as healthy urine. If either looks like wine, get it looked at.
Ok and could spilt the gas tank in half remove junk, then weld back together. Just an idea that came to mind.
Your fuel lines could be clogged also, wouldn’t be surprising with all that gunk you found in the gas tank.

Flush the fuel lines with super clean. It desolves the varnish better than any carb cleaner.
