My father sailed many of these trawlers as a young 14 year old and later became skipper at 18.
My sister and I used to jump on his trawlers when they pulled into Hull docks. My father shared some sad but wonderful stories of the sea.
Captain Edward A Barkworth sadly passed away April 11th 2015. RIP Hull Fishing and Dad

I can remember getting thrown on the trawler like a bed roll, so I could sail into the docks with him....... happy days

I went to London in 1960 to study Elec Engg on self financing scheme. Being a fully qualified Marine Radio Officer, I decided to earn by working on deep sea fishing trawlers during Christmas holidays, and on large ships during long summer holidays. The scheme worked beautifully. I was a member of the UK Radio Officers Union.
My first trawler in 1960 as Marconi Officer was on s t Admetus from Hull. On the advice of skipper Bill Redipenning, I worked on Northern Trawlers , Grimsby, during next 3 Christmas holidays.
In spite of extremely tough experiences in the Arctic Sea, the codfishing was very eventful, and on one occasion I had to contact the British Fishery Vessel HMS Palassir, too. At my age of 85+ years, I still cherish the fun filled fishing days, all so very friendly to me. Regards.

I find this hard to watch, especially with the current attempts to overturn brexit. It stirs deep feelings.....
My uncle was a ships electrician he lived in Hull all his life and worked on lots of trawlers, as did his son in law who was a refridgeration engineer. It wasnt just the trawlermen themselves who lost out to the betrayal of UK fishing by europhile quislings to oblige the eu scam, there were hundereds of other associated jobs that suffered. I will cheer the death of the dysfunctional dystopian european empire when it falls apart, just like the soviet one did 30 years since

GOLDSMITHEXILE 2016 .. I’m with you... I remember sailing on 'the Falklands Desire' (Ex. Southella H40) as a fishery protection vessel at the Falklands. We had put into Port Stanley and tied up for a night and, whilst watch below there was a banging on my berth door and someone shouting ‘ Emergency Engine start'... we’re responding to an SOS. I wasn’t sure I was dreaming it or not so jumped out sharpish shot down the engine room and started the mail engine after which we battled to get off the quay as the wind kept blowing us back on to it so, we rung her on full, run off the end of the quay and luckily got her away to sea. On arrival at the SOS scene I discovered it was a 'Brand New' Spanish trawler, (one of 'A new fleet of Spanish trawlers paid for by the EU) it was burning out and was a total wreck. Shame..., when Our British fleet were being scrapped. Suppose that’s the way of things eh.

Jesus will any rabid brexiteer not tie anything and everything into a soapbox for their barmy ideas. My uncles were all Hull fishermen off Hessle Rd, Jack Smith being the most well known of them and none of them knew what the fuck Europe was, except when they were over there fighting in WW2 and if anyone is to blame for the decline of the Hull fishing fleet it is the Icelanders. Nowt to do with the EU mate. In fact when these videos were made the EU and the Schengen accords didnt even exist...
like I said Brexiters..barmy, sheepish, confused and shellshocked by austerity people who think chopping the leg off the body will give it control over itself...And to think the amount of damage Tory policies have done to Hull over the years and yet now here are all the "dimmer folk" of Hull blaming it all on yes you guessed it Europe. Which we are with the ferries and the port, the Gateway to...Europe...and the only money Hulls seen in a dogs age is from Siemens from where? Germany in EUROPE.
So good luck starving for Boris (as you can bet he won't be) and paying double for everything so a few billionaires like him that owns Wetherspoons doesn't have to have his tax affairs looked into by the EU, you hapless numbskulls and you spell it REFRIGERATION...Which just goes to show the level of your feeble
      brainpower...

Definately agree. Despite a few near misses, she was the best sea sea ship I ever served on in 38 years at sea . 2nd Engineer for 4 years.Falkland Fishery patrol / reseach. Great crews, good times.
