This is 1 series of videos I'm looking forward to, i know it's still very early days, and hopefully the park gets the go-ahead, but the transformation in the land will be massive!
I'm really enjoying seeing the other projects that I follow, but this is going to be on another level. HS2 multiple sites over miles, whereas I expect this will be intense multiple build sites within a "small" site
Once they can. There will be more than one digger
Good flying. Orientation mystifying. National Highways postings will have to fill in the detail. I look forward to your next visit on a bright spring day.
In the 1990s I was a regular driver along the A1. Roundabouts regularly caused congestion. But one by one they were removed. Seemed odd to then add a new roundabout at Black Cat. Presumably this was for cost reasons. Now we are paying the price.
Great to see such progress being made. Thanks for your hard work.
Thanks. always an interesting view:-)
Add videos black cat roundabout
There’s not been much progress there, I’ve a couple of older videos in the playlist from late 2024 that show the bridgeworks
I can’t work out where the bridge heading into Kelpie Marine is going to go. And the website doesn’t have much detail either.
I think it is this structure being built here ua-cam.com/video/j5CyAanRWD8/v-deo.html with the A1 running over the top of the access and entrance to the road being from near the garden centre
That’s the one. Where’s it going too?? Is it crossing both carriageways of the A1? If so where’s it terminating?
It seems to run under the northbound carriageway, but looks like the current underpass under southbound will be removed. nationalhighways.co.uk/media/hlmnwrxr/a421-and-black-cat-roxton-road-link.jpg
It would be very naughty to climb over the fences and make frost angels and I wouldn't do it.
It Looked a bad design from the start. I'm surprised its lasted this long! Genius architecture!
thank the migrants. no money left to fix our country but the hotels have made a fortune.
You can’t really blame migrants can you?!? …On the other hand, what an absolute s*it show brexit was. You CAN thank the brexiteers for voting for that however.
well its quite obviously still standing 🙄
That's not a drain, it's an expansion joint, which allows for the concrete structure to expand and compress as temperatures change. Without them, the concrete would break up. Although it looks like it's doing a pretty good job of breaking up as it is... Looking at it, they'll most likely just take out the overpass and use the road that runs underneath instead
Great video. Keep posting …..
Take that section out and turn it into a cycle path, with a smaller bridge over the gap?
The road feature that you keep calling a drain is an expansion joint in the concrete - they allow for lateral movement. It looks like the road was designed quite badly as such joints shouldn't allow water to permeate into the concrete. Gateshead Council has known about this road being unsafe for at least 8 years. It has always been the councils intention to remove the road and replace it with a tree lined cycle path. Once demolished, I expect that idea will be followed through. This will not be the end of the story. Over the river, Central Motorway was built around the same time as this flyover - part of the road network you described. Central Motorway is also seen as problematic. The same idea is being passed around for that route too - demolish and turn it into a tree lined cycle path. If you're ever bored and fancy using your drone, go to the Redheugh Bridge (concrete one) over the Tyne. It sits upon concrete legs and they've also started crumbling. Just beneath the road deck, where the legs meet it, take a look at the concrete corrosion and crumbling. It's in a right state and is also known to the councils. So bad is that bridge that a car park beneath it has had to have sections closed off due to falling masonry! As others have mentioned, that round tower is ventilation/access to the Metro tunnel below.
The Metro crosses the route at about 90 degrees, almost exactly where the jacks have been fitted. The round brick structure at 4:07 is a ventilation and escape shaft.
Isn't there also a railway (or Metro) tunnel beneath this flyover (I have a vague memory of the original Metro being able to take advantage of road construction in the late 1960s)?
Not doing any harm leaving the bridge in place for a while.
Thanks for posting. According to the Chronicle: Demolition dates Saturday night/Sunday morning (approximately midnight - 8am Sunday): Saturday, October 19, then every Saturday until Saturday December 21 Saturday, January 4, then every Saturday until Saturday February 1 24-hour working: Midnight on Wednesday, December 25 - 6am Friday, December 27 Midnight on Saturday, February 8 - 6am Monday, February 10 Midnight on Saturday, February 15 - 6am Monday, February 17 Midnight Saturday, February 22 - 6am Monday, February 24 10pm Friday, February 28 - 6am Monday, March 3 10pm Friday, March 7 - 6am Monday, March 10 10pm Friday, March 14 - 6am Monday, March 17
Doesn’t seem much progress with the short work periods. Expected the Christmas closure to have been a major period of work.
Shite hole
Thanks for the update buddy, keep us posted ill keep my notifications on
Be back in Luton in a week or so, expect that we’ll see progress with the substation soon now the new one has been enclosed
@ cannot wait mate COYH
In detailed terms, in this method the bridge was pulled into position. What the video doesn’t show that clearly is the three sets of cables that pass under the completed bridge to strong points installed at the bottom of the embankment. The hydraulic machines (strand jacks) fitted at the back operate in short steps to grip and pull the load along the cables.
Amazing vdo, its literally right outside my door step 😢
Drove over it for the first time yesterday, 50mph speed restriction in place as always after laying new track. Hopefully not for too long 😅
Thank you for sharing these. Amazing to see. I live in Nappers and even though this has been very controversial for many of the residents, it is undoubtedly an amazing feat of engineering.
good of you to show a completed "St. Albans". Its outcome is clear enough unlike the one outside St. Pancras where I need the A to Z to make sense of it.
The works to the bridge will continue until May 2025, the works to get the railway open appear to be complete. One lane is due to open in February.
I thought that was rebar on top of the bridge and i thought they'd pour concrete on it. Maybe they will just go straight to a road surface. Anyone understand what happens next?
that is a CRANE ! wow great diggings and civils on the dank day. Fabulous and quick effort and progress for the St. Pancras retrofit/upgrade ! all good at St. Albans. wow.
It is a huge crane, the works have done so quickly and on time!
I bet the neighbours love all those trailers parked out side there houses over Christmas...
not much they can do about that 😭
I bet, they less annoying, than constant road traffic ;)
St Albans day 9 complete it's starving and thank you for joining and more St Albans work soon for rail Radlett SRFI soon
🚂
Trains wont be running to St Pancras yet as there is another bridge replacement, just north of STP
Great video as always 👏👍
Place your bets now, . . . what's the betting that'll need to do exactly the same again in ten years time, as the warehousing mushrooms beyond existing expectatiions. (M1 motorway syndrome).
If it ever does get demolished and new houses are built it will be interesting to hear what the new residents think of the smell the recycling plant creates.
I don't believe it'll ever be residential in the near future due to the lack of access, the main trainworks would need to be demolished.
Shows you that with enough money & manpower you can get things done fast - even in the UK!
The two trains are Tampers, it was one of them making the noise at the beginning of the video as it lifted the track to the correct position and pushed the ballast under the sleepers.
Thank you, I wondered what they were.
Thanks!
Thank you, that was very kind of you
Lot of works going off, my section is between Brent West and Radlett Junction…
Will you be documenting the entire site until its completion? Its good to see how these works are all done and see the progress made
I'll continue to track the development as it progresses, I have a great place to film from so should be able to film it occasionally.
Cool. 😎 Be good to see the tracks which are going in between the warehouses.
It looks like the new divergence embankment has grown since the other day. I have a feeling that's built with what the the yellow ballast trucks were carrying. They'll need a few more deliveries like that I'd guess. Thanks again for doing this. It keeps us all in touch with an important development. I can see the bridge deck is done at Agar Grove and it looks as though they will be pouring concrete soon as the rebar is all in place.
Brilliant series of videos. Very rare to get coverage of such large projects. I say this as Network Rail obviously couldn't be bothered. Thanks very much for your time and effort in doing this.
Thank you, I really don't know why they don't. It is the same on HS2, they throw up a brief video of something that has taken months.
Day 9 maybe tomorrow new bridge train open Sunday 29th thank you you
Thank you for the drone footage!!!
All this going on just a few streets away from my home, great drone footage, keep up the good work Sir 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Amazing how close to residential they’re working
i do wander why they have not filled the part between the pads with handrails around it,and then have big gap till the next 3 going left, cannot they work continu
Your video is of particular interest to me because I was born in St Albans in 1953 and lived there until 22 months ago. The location of the new interchange is very familiar to me and it is/was a controversial issue locally. I do understand and, to some extent, sympathise with the concerns of those who are opposed to what is taking place, especially regarding the need to upgrade the local road infrastructure, but it seems that powerful vested interests have won out. Having said that, as a (mainly armchair) and lifelong supporter of railways, I am pleased to have lived long enough to witness a reversal of the closure trend that upset so many people from the 1960's onwards. WE were the ones who felt powerless then, so I suppose it could be said that the pendulum has swung the other way. Now, all I need is for the long closed railway between Huntingdon and Cambridge to be reinstated - because I now live near it and it would be jolly convenient - some hope! 😄
Well said sir about the 1960's. Regards the local controversy about this project, I also lived in the area but only for 25 years, (1998-2023) and never opposed the it,so I'm glad to see it happening at long last . ps; your right about the former Cambridge -Huntingdon -St.Ives line, it'll never be a railway again in our lifetime.😢
It’s a disgrace. The former airfield was given free to Herts CC for use as a public park. Selling it for development is a betrayal
i cant wait for Day 5
Sorry won’t be today, just tried and it’s far too foggy
Hope you will do a speeded up version of the whole job when its finished!
