You could not go very fast with this car without the overdrive as the stock rear axle ratio had the engine spinning about as fast as it would go at about 55-60 mph. See the Car Wizard's video about his 1954 Savoy and what he did to rectify this problem (he swapped in a newer rear end as his had a bad axle shaft).
@@1575murray (I'm now JazzVictrola) Right, around 3.9 which would mean about 2,900 at 60. However, with overdrive, they installed 4.30 gears to give more get up and go on start-off, but only around 2,200 at 60. I don't know why they didn't just leave the 3.9, which would have dropped RPM to a real easy 1,800 or 1,900 RPM
I have a 1955 Plymouth Belvedere, It's amazing the difference. I sometimes wonder how someone reacted back then if they bought a 54 then saw the 55 they must have been hitting their head into a wall. lol
@@mdogg1604 The 1953-54 Chevrolets were good looking cars. Even after the small block V8 was introduced in 1955 for years Chevrolet continued to sell a lot of cars with inline 6 engines.
Beautiful car.👌🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
That overdrive is a very nice option to slow the revs down!

That might be a Savoy, but the fins are off of a Belvidere.
Nice!

Same with those who bought a new '54 Chevy, and then comes the immortal '55 complete with a 265 V-8!
Does your Belvedere have a V8? How does it perform? How durable is it?
1954 would still have the flathead six; no engine choices till 1955, then the choices increased by leaps and bounds as the 50's turned into the '60's.
My Dad has to get rid of the ‘55 he bought new pretty quick because of rust.
