  • We rescued this abandoned '54 Plymouth Belvedere from a fallen apart barn where it was parked back in 1976.
This Plymouth was OFF the road longer than it was running ON it! at 48 years, this is the longest sitting recovery I have done so far! Stay tuned for more videos on the Plymouth.

Hi- It appears you've got some "good bones" to work with.
Your "Hy-Drive" transmission was a stop-gap semi-automatic transmission utilizing an actual torque converter instead of a simple fluid coupling as with previous Mopar semi-auto transmissions offered in earlier years.
This transmission torque converter shares the same oil with the engine. The oil capacity for this is 10 quarts plus one more quart if the oil filter is changed.
After February '54, half way into the model year, Plymouth finally received the fully automatic "Powerflite" transmission.
The original colors of your car were named "San Gabriel Green" with a "San Leandro Ivory" top and accents.
I'm in the process of restoring two '54 Belvederes, both are 4 door sedans. One car is equipped with a 217.8 cu. in. engine with overdrive and the other has the 230 cu. in. engine with Powerflite.
The 230, (same engine as Dodge,)- was given to Plymouth to compensate for the inherent losses of the Powerflite transmission That gave an increase of 10 HP over the 217 engine. This engine size increase began at the same time as introduction of Powerflites for Plymouths.
Engine size: If there is a diamond stamped into the block before the engine serial, that would indicate a 230 cu.in. engine. No diamond = 217 engine.
    Here is one of mine:

Good luck with yours!- I'll be looking forward to watching you getting yours running.

Your car look excellent!! Thank you for all of the great information! I just ordered a few vintage service manuals as well as a reproduction manual so I can do some more learning about this car. I have made progress on it, and im hoping to fire it for the first time next week.

I'll post all the updates for the car for sure. For now, I've only cleaned the rat mess from the inside and put new tires on it. hopefully in the next few weeks, My back will be good enough to work on getting it running! I'll probably start posting on Instagram about it in the meantime

It is one of the really well balanced cars from the perspective of interior room compared to size, [a little over 14 feet long]. It will be spectacular when restored or resto-moded.

I agree with you. The size is really good for a usable car with kiddos. My plan is to get it daily drivable as is for an around town car. After that, who knows.

Odd that you mention "well balanced." That was a sales term used by Plymouth at the time.

I've seen one of the ads and I feel it is a correct assessment of this model. I hope all of the remaining ones are saved. @@dennisdaly907
