- This week we are painting a copy of Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night with an airbrush on canvas. But first, I'm taking you guys with me to the museum of modern art in NYC to see the real painting. In this video (part 1) I'll be showing you how I painted in the sky using shields and erasing techniques to mimic brush strokes. Thanks for watching!

Love the intro and how it reminded me of the what and why I enjoy art! Also loved the quote from Van Gogh being critical of his own work - I think many of us can relate. And as usual, you nailed it on the airbrush work. So much talent in the art itself, and you do a great job teaching it. Thanks for what you do!
Thanks so very much Kevin. I really appreciate this. I agree he seemed to be so critical of himself and his paintings. If only he could have seen how he would've been regarded today!
Iconic piece. Great choice man. It's looking pretty killer so far.
thanks so much man!
Great Job Mark! That paint has always given me anxiety vibe! Like being stuck in a place. Only having a look through a window depicting a f$$* up world we live in! Awesome thanks for sharing! 👍🏽✌🏽
Thanks JC! Yes, I've always felt the same about this one as well. Almost like a sense of dread in it
@@theartworkshop 💯 have a great weekend!
This is incredible and very, very interesting technique, never would guess this was airbrushed. The texture you achieve with the sand and eraser is so good, lots of patience and attention to detail.... wow
thanks so much! it took me so much longer than I thought it would
I'd have never thought of recreating Van Gogh's style with an airbrush...now I want to try my hand at it! 🙌
You should! It's a fun one
Great information about Van Gough, thanks for sharing.
thanks Louis!
Awesome. I love Vincent's work as well as Renoir's. I've always wondered how an airbrush could approximate a heavily loaded paint brush with oil paints. Your way works.
Thanks- I love Renoir as well! He's easily one of my favorite impressionists
👍👍👍👍👍 Thank you so much for the movie and the lesson!!! It's very cool to own an airbrush to the point where you can copy paintings designed for a brush)))
you're very welcome mag! Thanks so the kind words
You can put your hand to anything awesum work as always
thanks so much Tony! How's that micron takumi treating you?
It’s an amazing bit of kit really enjoying the precision of it my friend and especially it’s so easy to clean with the removable side cup I always look forward to your weekly posts after work your an inspiration 🙏🏼
Wow! Great video, love the art history lesson, takes me back to Philly and PCA in the 70s. As I recall not too many students were using airbrushes at the time, perhaps some of the illustration majors. My wife enjoyed your video so much she wants to start painting again. Happy Friday, well done!
Thanks so much Edward. Same for me in art school- no one used an airbrush. Yes, your wife should get back to painting asap- get those paints and brushes back out!!
greetings 🎉
Love the field trip and the educational info you bring to your videos. I learn a lot from your techniques. keep up the good work!
so glad to hear that- thank so much!
I'll have to get out to MOMA one day. Awesome video always love your intros at the MOMA Thanks
You sure do! It's a really cool place to check out. Thanks so much
I love your art history vids. I did see one of his self portraits in the national gallery on a recent trip to Washington along with a trip to the phillips collection. Had a great time walked my feet off.
Thanks so much Ken- I enjoy making them. Oh yeah, those museums visits are days you definitely get your steps in! It's a shame I've never been to the national gallery. The phillips collection has some incredible works. I need to get there one day.
I would love to see you do a Goya painting next! He’s my favorite artist after Caravaggio
I LOVE Goya. One of my favorites as well! There is a great book on him by Robert Hughes that I really enjoyed
Thank you I’ll definitely check out the book. Ps I love how the new Van Gogh piece is coming out. You’re extremely talented 🙌🏽
I airbrush this one on a twelve pain window. I free hand it all. It was fun painting. Did twenty years ago.
That's awesome! How large was it? pretty big i'd assume
Great stuff Mark. From the history to the actual painting you nailed it. I have done allot of old art with a airbrush including The great wave of Kanagawa along with Chinese watercolor style landscapes but never even considered Impressionist style.
Thanks so very much Duane! You painted the great wave?! I would love to see that sometime because I never made a copy or drawing of one of those Japanese prints. I think they are so cool looking.
awsome!!
thanks!
Tack!
thank you so very much Jari!! so very nice of you and I greatly appreciate it
I love your tutorials. My comment might be off target but I wanted to mention it to anyway. Are you familiar with the British SciFi series Doctor Who ? It's been one of my favorites, since the early 70's (yes, I'm that old). It's about a Time Lord (his race) who travels through time and space. Season 5, episode 10, "Vincent and the Doctor" is an exceptional story about van Gogh. Of course it's mostly fictional, dealing with aliens and such (just the nature of the show) but there are some interesting facts about Vincent van Gogh. The end is particularly heartwarming although totally impossible (no spoilers). If you ever get a chance to see it I think you would enjoy it.
Thanks so much, Mark. I have seen it and oh man was it sad, especially the part in the gallery! I'll have to go back and watch that again someday.
Incredible Mark just the laying out on the grid would destroy me.
hahah I felt the same!
Just checked the link for the Crescent board and Amazon has it as GBP127 which is ridiculous for one board.
that is crazy!! Here it is $36 usd for 10 of them. They are decent size too at 15 x 20 Inches. A large sheet 20x30" should be no more than $8
Hello Mark, I don’t know what happened, but I’m not getting member perks. I know I had some issues with my bank. Anyways I have tried to update membership with no luck it just keeps taking me to member tiers, which it still has me there but nothing else. I would like to know what I need to do? Thank you
Hey Roxane! Yes, I see that you are a channel member but it looks to me like it's on a different account. It's says Roxane with your profile picture, not Airbrush Art & Customs.
Yes I wanted an account on both I know I have to pay for both. Is there a way to do that
I didn’t know that signing up on other account would knock me off this one, I thought it would add another. Sorry 😞
@@airbrushartistry No apologies!! Thank you so much for being a member Roxane. If you ever need anything or help, please let me know. Hope you have a great week ahead.
Yes I have unsubscribed under my personal and would like to resubscribe under airbrush Art & customs however I have no link to do so, I really do not want the time to run out and lose my time on channel. I’ve tried updating with no luck, could you help me?
I don't think it runs out or anything like that! Even if you stop and come back to it, it still keeps the months as a member. I believe all you need to do is hit the join button in the account you are logged into and then choose a tier. Thanks so much Roxane!
