Part 2: • Chris Herren Passed on...
--------
In this clip, Chris Herren talked about growing up in Massachusetts and playing basketball in an area obsessed with hoops, specifically high school hoops at Durfee High, where he played. Chris recalled the tough love he received from his father, who dealt with alcoholism, and how his parenting was affected by it. Chris also recalled a moment of his father’s tough love in action after he played poorly in the McDonald’s All-American game.
Chris Herren later discussed the immense pressure he was under coming in at Durfee High, where he was one of a long line of Durfee hoopers, beginning with his grandfather. He opened up about experimenting with drugs early on in high school but said it was just part of the culture at the time. Chris also dished on the current crop of hoopers coming up who have trainers, pointing out that he got better playing in his driveway.

I’m from Fresno and watching him play as a kid I had no idea he was on drugs that heavy he was rawest player on a team full of ballers
Me too!
I'm from madera I feel you all. He was bad ass
Yeah, Chris is from my hometown in Mass. We were surprised to see him go across the country and play in Fresno. But had a solid college career
If anyone has seen his doc you know how crazy his story is. Can’t wait for the full video to come out.
His 30 for 30 was crazy
Yea forreal. My dog was going outside at the arenas buying shit playing in the national basketball assssosyationn
Yeah for real I saw it years ago so I clicked on this immediately.
Amazing documentary
I seen and read his book. Dude was a baller and has incredible story of his life.
I respect his come up, his fall from grace and his bounce back. He has a Hell of a story. Could've been a star in the league if he didn't have the addiction. He could really ball.
This is by far, hands down, going to be the realest interview and realest person to ever grace the VLADTV channel and I haven’t even started watching it yet. This man went through the flames of hell on a Mary go round. I’ve been there. He made it out and I did as well with help from stories like his. That if he could bounce back and become a sober being, then I knew there was hope for me too. I’m not a firm believer in hope, just faith, but when your in the midst of a black abyss, a pit with no bottom, hope is all you have. Chris if you ever read this brother, tears are actually coming from my eyes as I type this message, thank you
Big up to y’all from Brockton
@@TheBuddhaVlogs30508 💯🫡🤛
Salute this brother. He has come a long way and is a testament of redemption
Chris was one of the people I watched that helped me on my journey into sobriety.
Thank you Chris. God bless🙏
Him and Skip was the coldest backcourt in college at Fresno State
This man is a LEGEND! Can’t wait for ppl to hear his story
Herren is a hero to New England and people in recovery alike 🙏🏼
I'm from Fall River and when he was playing ar Durfee man the city was electric!!
Dude was a baller when he was in the Big East when Iverson, Kerry Kittles, John Wallace, Felipe Lopez and Ray Allen played in the Conference.
💯
Chris Herren was a beast. I remember he made Sports Illistrated.
I'm happy to see he's balanced, happy, and moving forward.
My Guy and former teammate at Fresno State 💪🏾💯..
Chris is a superstar in our city. It was a win for the whole city to see him get signed & eventually ay in Green. His dad's a good guy too. I still see Big Mike around the city. Mike's a good dude too. Just some city kids
Big up from Brockton
Definitely some city legends
Fall River in the house!!! 🤙💯
He was nice at Fresno State!! Definitely needs a movie.
I grew up in Fall River and played with Chris a couple times at Highland Park.. real young. Cool dude. Nice to see a few of us rose above our circumstances. Great job Chris.
This dudes documentary is powerful
For someone that only averaged 3 points in his NBA career his story is so memorable
@@Playerism hood legend
Dude scored like 30 in a Celtics game and hit game winning shot after snorting 2 OC 80s right before tip off. He wasn't even going to play if his dealer didnt show up on time and dude showed up with like 10 minutes to tip off. Obviously not something thats a highlight but shows his the skills he had. Came into a noon game at Fresno St after staying up snorting coke all night and beat a top team in the country
Bro are you kidding me dude was talented he was on drugs his whole career stop hating!
Chris Herren was raw, and easily could’ve had a long successful career had it not been for the addiction, stats don’t always tell the whole story
Born and raised in Fall River legend in the building
I remember him and his story, he looks so much better NOW then when he was younger. He looked so malnutritioned and pale, now his face full and healthy. Proud of him.
Irish Americans, we have this red hue in our face when we are healthy....and I remember when I had problems I was grayish, so was he....so true what you wrote
Hope he is doing well!! New bout him from when I was in High School/College. His story is a great redemption story. God Bless Chris.. Stay locked in and Stay focused on your steps!!
He’s doing amazing. And saving lives
Fresno State legend
Dude has a powerful story. I've watched him give his testimony at different schools on UA-cam. Even though I was grown, his story helped me overcome depression. Big ups to this man 💯
We are so proud of you Chris.
This dude was a beast at one time. Could have had a very good NBA career
I read about him in County Jail. He been thru a lot. But he overcame his demons.
I recommend his espn 30 for 30 to everyone it's a great documentary
Wait whaaaaaaat?? I’ve been following Chris Herren for so long!! Ever since “Unguarded” came out over 10 years ago. Anyone who wants to watch an inspiring, real, gritty, amazing story you need to check it out. This dude basically made it to the nba and played with the Boston Celtics while being a full time opiate addict. Talks about how he was in warmups at the Garden waiting for his dealer to pull up and drop off the OxyContin. Respect to Vald for getting this man on here m🙏🙏🔥🔥
Shout out to this guy just for being so honest.
When Chris played overseas he bought H from a dealer who hung out at an airport who had a string tied to his tooth attached to a bag with small bags of H in it that he kept swallowed in his stomach and would pull it out of stomach with the string when he sold to users. WILD!!!
Yeah this interviewer didn’t do a good job at all of getting Chris to tell the detailed crazy stories like that. Needed more of the specifics from the interview. The 30 for 30 was much better.
This one probably won't get too many views but...don't sleep on this one....good story
💯
I read Chris book and watched the ESPN doc. Great story and is true inspiration for dudes like me
His story has always been so intriguing. A blessed man 🙏🏾
Loved him playing for Tark the Shark
I remember in rehab they played his documentary so many times.
Great 30 for 30 about him called unguarded
Good dude right there he's been thru hell and back I'm from the same city and I know him he's done a lot for the city of Fall River
One of the best and most recruited kids coming out of Massachusetts
Vlad shoulda did this interview this dude is a legend
@ 9:00 he starts speaking facts 🥺
Coaching a kid is basically demanding perfection of someone and the consequences when your not perfect. Every kid I played sports with who was the coaches son hated their dad and generally didn't even want to play. I know what he means he doesn't want to show that side.
Some people find peace thru addiction..
His story is so crazy. The doc on him is powerful stuff.
Dope interview
Vlad should have done his interview he’s a real legend
As a person that used to do wild sh in high school, I feel telling stories of doing drugs while on public platform does more damage than good for kids.
Example: I would tell a friend about me doing mushrooms, almost k***ing myself on it, and somewhere-somehow my friend wanted to do mushrooms after this.
The more famous you are the more chances the story is taken like that. Because they see him successful and think if he did drugs and succeeded then they "can"
That's the one kid that ODs on same thing Chris did. Drug conversations are very tricky with kids.
Telling personal stories can really backfire, because then your kid knows what kind of wild sh his dad was on.
Being sober is more valuable to you, and you should explain that to a kid, rather than telling him what kind of drugs you did. I got stories, but telling this to my kid just to say it...absolutely not
Not that I am ashamed now, I understand my path, but kids, man...be very careful with your childhood stories, because kids relate and try it.
Fentanyl is taking kids and adults from this planet, and in this era doing x pills can be lethal from the first pill you take. Because it might have fentanyl in it. Fentanyl is 50 times stronger than heroin, 10 times stronger than morphine.
This is real problem. Doing any kind of strong drugs now can take you with 1 try. No more OD and recovery, just straight to the other side, gone physically. End for you.
For all my new englanders out there, Chris sounds like the epitome of the Fall River accent 😂 I love it
Facts
Dude was The Truth. Came back from That Madness.
They had to censor weeeeeeed? 👀
This guys the best interviewer vlads has.
love hearing from this guy and hear he’s still doing well

New Bedford vs Durfee. Y’all have no idea.
Break it down then
@@silewis9396 think RedSox vs Yankees / Duke / NC, but on a High School level
Vlad brining the heat with those one
It's crazy. Ja Morant made it... and is doing everything in his power to destroy it. Like not realizing man it's not luck, you worked. HARD. You get what you put in. It's almost like a guilt.
Saw him speak live, powerful message
This is y these types of interviews need vlad. We wouldn't have got to the drugs until at least part 4. He all over the place already
I actually saw him play in highschool.he was so good ,I gave him a autographed pair of Spaulding pumps to wear on the court.

Check out the "Behind the Madness" documentary on the Fresno team that had Herren, Alston, etc. coached by Tarkanian. Pretty cool documentary.
I wish Vlad interviewed him instead . But solid man Chris is 💯
I never understood why anyone would willingly go to Fresno. Now it makes sense.
Everyone from the DMV said “Capital Classic” before he could even say it. The memories 😢
Straight awesome 👏 Boston strong ! Old school! Baller
☘ much love to him
I remember when he signed for an italiani team. Never played
Born and raised in Boston he is a legend in Mass Facts glad he over came his demons nbs
Not born or raised in Boston. He's from Fall River, which is 45mins to an hour from downtown.
@@stephenobrien2408😆...appears ta me the writer-COMMENT-is referring to HIMSELF being “born ‘n raised IN Boston”...like me. Yup, 45min FROM Fall Rivah-we knew ABOUT Durfee\Herren. Specially me watching him play against and then WITH Leo\BABC in 〽️ission Hill. GREAT life story Herren’s workin on...🙌🏽
Fresno State basketball hasn't been the same since those Tark teams. Those dudes from the East Coast took over that Farm town.
Damn I thought the title said Chris Hanson lol
