Introduced in 1963, the M109 retained the same chassis and turret as its predecessor, the M108 105mm SP howitzer, but with a 155mm cannon with muzzle break and fume extractor and rear stabilization spades.
Beginning in 1973, twenty years of successive improvement yielded six variants (M109A1-M109A6 Paladin), which incorporated a longer cannon tube, improved shielding, nuclear, biological and chemical protection, computer and communication systems, and a redesigned turret.
This display model #6689, was issued to a United States Army Forces Command unit at Fort Carson, Colorado in 1989 to be used for training purposes.
Initially manufactured as an M109A2, it was later converted to a M109A4, then to its present M109A5 model in the late 1980s.
